Asus Tablet 600 headed for the FCC?

Android-powered tablets are dime a dozen, but from time to time, there is something that comes along which has an increased sense of expectation, and I guess you could say that the yet unreleased Asus Tablet 600 which has arrived at the FCC is something you might want to consider owning in due time. The most recent FCC filing does point towards an Asus branded tablet which will not be taking the Android route, but rather, bearing the mark of Windows 8 from Microsoft. Also known as the TF600T by the Feds, this yet unannounced product does seem to sound similar to the Tablet 600 which was displayed for all and sundry to have a closer look at at Computex earlier this year. Upon checking out more about the Asus Tablet 600, we do know that it will come with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, not to mention having NFC support. I would say that the Windows logo as well as Transformer-like model number are the main reasons of interest.

IDC: Samsung and Apple ship almost half of all smartphones, but Korean manufacturer maintains lead

IDC Apple and Samsung ship almost half of all smartphones, jockey for first and second place

IDC’s latest figures offer some predictable reading. More phones are being sold than ever before; 406 million units were sold in Q2, against 401.8 million in the same period last year — with a 42 percent increase in smartphone sales. The winners? Perennial court antagonists, Samsung and Apple, with the duo doubling their combined market share over the last two years. Samsung maintains its lead, reaching over 50 million phones sold — and a new quarterly sales record — while Apple saw a quarter-over-quarter decline, as buyers presumably wait for Cupertino’s latest iteration, or go elsewhere. Nokia, meanwhile, had another “transitional” quarter, with sales of both Symbian and MeeGo devices shrinking, although its Windows Phones proved stronger. According to IDC‘s figures, Nokia and Microsoft’s team-up handset sales have doubled since last quarter. HTC misses out on a top three spot, but its fortunes appear to have improved over the last two quarters, with the IDC pointing the finger at a more streamlined product range from the Taiwan manufacturer. ZTE continues to nip at its heels, reaching the top five thanks to strong entry-level smartphone sales in China, while continuing to inch onto US shores. If you’re looking for a full breakdown of all phones sold, dumb and otherwise, read up at the source below.

Acer confirms Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for select Iconia tablets?

You can say that the race is definitely on – with different tablet manufacturers working hard to release the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for their respective pieces of hardware. We do know that Acer did roll out a quartet of new tablets this year – including the Iconia Tab A200 that we see above, the Iconia Tab 110, the Iconia Tab 510, and the Iconia Tab 700 that sports a Full HD display. The thing is, they all do not come with the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update, but rather, run on the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. Needless to say, some of the customers do expect some Android 4.1 Jelly Bean goodness to come their way, and Dutch website Tablet Guide reported that Acer has already confirmed that the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update is coming. No exact model names were given, and neither was there any timeframe revealed either. Hopefully something official will be released from the horse’s mouth in due time, and we just cannot wait.

Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi owners finally rocks to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

After numerous soak tests of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for the Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi, here we are with word that normal owners of the Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi will now be able to take advantage of running the latest version of Android on their respective tablets. After all, there has been reports by those who are not part of the select test group who have already received the OTA (Over The Air) update to Android 4.1.1. This would make the Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi the first 10-inch tablet to experience Jelly Bean, and it does not have any Nexus naming convention in the nametag as well. I guess if you happen to own the Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi tablet, you would do well to keep on checking for updates on a regular basis.

Joel McHale’s Take On Chevy Chase Doesn’t Sit Well With Letterman On ‘Late Show’ (VIDEO)

David Letterman seemed determined to use Joel McHale’s appearance on “Late Show” (Weeknights, 11:35 p.m. ET on CBS) to try and defend the good name of his friend Chevy Chase. McHale has spoken on occasion about the controversy that surrounded Chase and “Community” creator Dan Harmon, but he himself never seemed to have any issues with his co-star.

Nevertheless, Letterman and Paul Shaffer were adamant in their defense of Chase’s character, even going so far as to calling into question the veracity of some of McHale’s stories about Chase trying to goad him into fist-fights on set.

The whole interview came off very strange. At times, it looked like McHale was laughing the whole thing off, but at other times he looked genuinely uncomfortable. And then, to wrap up the bizarre segment, Letterman threw to a picture of Chase just before the commercial break.

Sony Mobile says no to physical QWERTY keyboards on future Xperia handsets

Well, it has been more or less confirmed that Sony will not be offering the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for Xperia smartphones which were released in the year 2011, and here we are with word that Sony will not be including a physical QWERTY keyboard into their Xperia smartphones for the year ahead. I guess that means we are talking about a full touchscreen experience from now on, and those who have always wanted to enjoy a physical QWERTY keyboard will most probably have to learn to live with a pure touchscreen display experience.

This bit of news hailed came from John Cooper, UK Product Manager for Sony Mobile, who did spend some time giving answers to questions on Facebook. Sony claimed that the reason why they would not include a physical QWERTY keyboard is because “the market seems to prefer large touch screens to keyboards at the moment so unfortunately we don’t have any current plans to release an Xperia with a keyboard.”

RIM prepares PlayBook OS 2.1 update

RIM’s PlayBook is not exactly the best selling tablet device in the market, which is rather disappointing when you consider the kind of potential it had, and we have word that the 4G BlackBerry PlayBook is due to launch, so RIM has done the necessary, which is to prepare the roll out of its latest tablet operating system version, known as PlayBook OS 2.1. We do expect a beta version to be in the pipeline in the near future, but it seems that the changelog has already appeared on the Internet in the form of a leak, giving us an early preview as to what we are able to expect from PlayBook OS 2.1 when it is finally here.

At the top of the list of improvements would be superior performance for the Android Player. No longer will your PlayBook be a servant to converted Android apps within a single application space, as from PlayBook OS 2.1 onwards, Android apps will appear as individual programs in the task switcher, similar to how native PlayBook apps have always looked like. Android apps can not also access the PlayBook’s cameras, and this feature would definitely put a smile onto the face of many who have longed to see this feature implemented.

Dell Streak 7 gets unofficial Android 4.1 Jelly Bean ROM

The Dell Streak 7 might be a piece of hardware which has been discontinued despite being launched early last year, making it relatively short lived. It must be said that the Dell Streak 7 is one of the first tablets in the world to feature the NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor, accompanied by a low resolution 800 x 480 resolution display and Android 2.2 Froyo, which was pretty backward then when Android 3.0 Honeycomb with higher resolution displays on tablets were all the rage. Glad to know that there is a community out there who do not mind developing custom ROMs for Dell Streak 7 despite it being discontinued, and here we are with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean being made available – unofficially speaking, of course, for the Dell Streak 7.

Just what will this update bring to the table? We are talking about a faster user interface, an improved search search experience, a superior keyboard, and Google’s reply to Apple’s voice assistant, Siri. Do bear in mind that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for the Dell Streak 7 is still currently being worked upon, so its fair share of important hardware functions are not in full swing yet, although Bluetooth connectivity, touch sensitivity, and other features still work like a charm.
