3D printed assault rifle – is it time to be afraid?

Have you ever wondered about the different possibilities that are associated with a 3D printer? Apart from printing keys that will allow you to escape from being handcuffed, there is the possibility of something even worse potentially (depending on which side of the divide you are on), which is to print out an assault rifle for your own use. This is exactly what someone managed to do, where amateur gunsmith “HaveBlue” printed out the lower receiver portion of a gun after assembling it onto a .223 upper. Apart from that, HaveBlue did claim that there are a few kinks involved as the rifle functions similarly like a real one.

It must be said that HaveBlue did not just print a 3D rifle, but he also wanted to experiment with the amount of “censorship” online on 3D sharing sites such as MakerBot’s Thingiverse, as to whether such weapon designs would be allowed to have an online presence. What do you think? I suppose it is only a matter of time before someone comes up with a fully working 3D printed firearm, no?

Fido hops on the LTE bandwagon, gives Canadians frugal 4G this summer

Fido hops on the LTE bandwagon, gives Canadians frugal 4G this summer

Rogers was the first with LTE in Canada. Its budget brand Fido has largely been left out of that 4G fiesta, but the gap is closing today with official plans to give the yellow doghouse some LTE of its own. The initial deployment this summer will largely overlap Rogers’ fledgling network, starting with benchmark cities Calgary, Montreal, Ottawa, St. John’s, Toronto and Vancouver. Only a Fido Mobile Hotspot with 10-device sharing will kick off the hardware selection; if you’re impatient, though, any compatible and (usually) unlocked LTE device will do with a relevant SIM card. About 20 million Canucks will potentially have the high-speed option by the end of the year — and with Fido’s plan costs expected to stay the same, that coverage could make the provider a de facto choice for fast data in the Great White North. Click past the break for the official word and the full 2012 expansion list.

PS3, PC to miss Dawnguard

According to Bethesda marketing boss Pete Hines, he has extinguished whatever little hope there is left for a rapid release for of Skyrim’s Dawnguard DLC (downloadable content) for the PC and Sony PS3. Pete Hines tweeted, “We have not announced Dawnguard for any other platform, nor given a timeline for any such news. If we have news, I promise I’d tell you.” Talk about being a wet blanket for a potentially explosive extension to the hugely popular Skyrim franchise, no? Well, just to gain some context, Dawnguard is the first expansion for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and it will arrive on the Xbox 360 platform this coming June 26th, which technically speaking, would be today. What do you think of this bit of news if you are a PS3 or PC gamer?

iPhone to end up as a game controller?

It is safe to say that Apple has managed to turn the iPhone into a unique portable gaming machine, and the latest patent would usher the possibility of your humble iPhone to be more than just a portable gaming machine. Rather, this patent would mean your iPhone could eventually end up as a game controller for a console. The most recent patent application which was published today pointed to Cupertino’s intention of relying on a typical dual-analog controller in order to have it interface with Apple TV as well as other iOS-powered devices. The documented controller does seem rather similar to what Sony offers in the form of the DualShock, boasting a couple of analog sticks, a quartet of shoulder buttons, and four face buttons – not forgetting the possibility of Start and Select buttons, of course.

Are we talking about potential new device known as the iController? Perhaps, as this patent also talks about the possibility of transforming the iPhone into a universal remote, allowing it to operate with video game consoles, and in that particular diagram, the system does seem remarkably alike to an Xbox 360. Bear in mind that all patents might never end up as reality, but it does point towards Apple’s propensity towards the gaming industry which they might get involved in later.

Diablo 3 arcade cabinet built by passion for the game

It is safe to assume that a fair number of us grew up in arcades, feeding those machines quarter after quarter as a rite of passage, where we pick up all the different skills along the way in order ot master a particular game, moving on to other different titles afterwards. When it comes to dungeon hack and slash titles on the PC platform, the preferred mode of control by many would be the classic keyboard and mouse combination, something which has long been taken as the de facto standard. How about transforming your Diablo 3 experience, character exploits or not, into a totally different one? What you see demonstrated in the video above is a DIY project that sees Dave Niewinksi to transfer the essence of Diablo 3 into an old-school arcade machine, and I would say that his efforts have been pretty much successful from what we could see.

Made out of plywood and emblazoned with decals that were borrowed from Blizzard and cgtextures.com, Dave’s very own arcade cabinet relied on a VB.NET-powered program it order to have the physical controls and the game work in tandem without any hold up whatsoever. There were no modifications made to the game files, and according to Dave himself, “Everything works outside of the game.” There does not seem to have any opportunities to throw in quarters into this machine for sure.

‘Project Runway’: Candy Was The Material, Leading To Some Fun And Colorful Designs (VIDEO)

It was a confectioner’s dream on “Project Runway” (Thu., 9 p.m. ET on Lifetime) as the contestants were treated with their first unconventional challenge. And it was a sweet one, as they were tasked to use candy in their designs.

What followed were some truly inspired pieces, utilizing brilliantly the varied textures, colors and shapes of their unconventional ingredient. But not everyone proved up to the challenge.

Gunnar, Sonjia and Ven seemed to sail through the challenge, easily scoring the top three outfits. But it was a different story for Buffi, Elena and Lantie. Buffi’s look didn’t fit the model properly, Elena’s dress was struggling to hold itself together, and Lantie didn’t embrace the candy motif at all. Instead, she just threw a few pieces of candy on her design.

Video of record-setting Chip Yates electric plane flight shows power loss, dramatic deadstick landing

We’ve chronicled Flight of the Century founder and CEO Chip Yates‘ record-breaking 202.6MPH flight in his Long-ESA EV craft before. What we didn’t quite touch on, however, is the power loss Yates’ aircraft suffered after earning that electric plane speed record. Now Yates has released new video of the flight, which includes the moment his aircraft breaks the record, the ensuing power loss and his dramatic deadstick landing. That smile you see in the photo up there is the smile of a man who just made history and is also happy to be alive. Hey, we’re glad he’s safe, too. You can witness the close call yourself by checking out the video after the break.

Chinese microbot walks on water, skims the surface of insect-inspired design

Water jumping microbot proves anything bugs can do, robots can do too

Bugs are creepy. You don’t need to be an entomophobe to empathize with that sentiment. But bugs are also inspiring — to researchers in China, that is. Taking a cue from nature, a team of engineers from the country’s School of Chemical Engineering and Technology have devised a microbot weighing just 0.02 lbs (11 grams) that can repeatedly jump across the surface of water without tanking. How’d they do it? Well, by using a highly repellent foam coating, the strider-like bot’s legs are able to stay afloat with every 5.5 inch (14 cm) leap it makes, buffering the force that would normally plunge it below the H20. The creation of this hydrophobic mini-insectoborg isn’t exactly the first of its kind, other aquatic gliders have come before, but this itty bitty fella’s the first to successfully and repeatedly hop along an aqueous top. Unfortunately, there’s no video demo for you to feast your eyes upon, so you’ll just have to take our word for it.

‘Louie’: Parker Posey Has Louis C.K. Put On A Dress, And That’s Just One Part Of Their Wild First Date (VIDEO)

In the second part of the first ever multi-episode arc on “Louie” (Thu., 10:30 p.m. ET on FX), fans got to see the first date between Louie and his bookstore love interest — played by Parker Posey. In classic “Louie” fashion, it was one uncomfortable moment after another.

The date wound up dominating the entire episode, climaxing in a vintage clothing store where Posey’s character, not named Tape Recorder, convinced Louie to put on a dress. She said it was a sign to prove that he liked her. When he put it on, she laughed in his face, but at least he passed the test.

The date involved a lot of Posey’s character dragging Louie around New York after she was refused service at a bar she apparently frequents. It culminated in her dragging him up an unspecified number of stairs to the roof of a building. She thought the treacherous climb was worth the view. Louie is scared of heights.
