John Roberts Health Care Decision: Supreme Court Chief Justice Switched Sides, Sources Say

Fresh evidence has surfaced regarding suspicions that Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts switched his vote on health care reform.

CBS News reports that Roberts initially sided with the court’s four conservative members to overturn President Barack Obama’s individual mandate. After changing his mind, Roberts fended off a month of efforts to sway him back to the other side, headed by Justice Anthony Kennedy.

“He was relentless,” a source told CBS regarding Kennedy’s push. “He was very engaged in this.”

Dean Obeidallah: Super Tax the Super PACs

Did you know that Super PACs don’t pay taxes on the contributions they receive? Unbelievable, isn’t it? These Super PACs are no doubt businesses but the contributions are not taxable because they are considered “gifts” under federal tax law.

Waywire, Cory Booker And Eric Schmidt’s Social Video Startup, Aims To Engage Teens Online

Cory Booker, the frenetic Twitter super-user and mayor of Newark, has often been approached by people in the media world seeking to grab a little bit of his star power for everything from television shows to books.

But none of it felt right. None of those old media channels would help accomplish his vision of “elevating the voices of people, creating a movement for change,” he said. So instead, he’s getting into the startup game.

Waywire, a new social media site backed by Booker and Google’s executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, and other big names in the tech world, came out of stealth development on Saturday. Billed as a social video site for do-gooders from the millennial generation, the website won’t be open for business until later this summer, but it’s now accepting email registrations for its beta launch.

Millenium Falcon Cake: She May Not Look Like Much but She Has Frosting Where It Counts

This Millenium Falcon wedding cake looks delicious, although you have to really feel for our buddy Han. He looks really scared there with his eyes popping out of his fondant head.

I’m not sure of all the construction details, but they did an amazing job. The detail is super nice, right down to the guns and radar dish. I’m not sure why Leia is blonde though. Probably because the bride is a blonde. And the heads of Boba Fett and some stormtroopers are a nice touch. And not a spot on it suggesting that a finger had poked at it to get a taste.

Well, I hope that this couple shares a happy life full of geek treats like this cake. Well, not so much that they end up looking like Jabba though. Great cake!

Let’s All Be Happy Lego Didn’t Have Patent Trolls to Deal With in 1958 [Past Perfect]

For the most part, the innerworkings of a Lego brick aren’t all that complex. It’s just a matter of good Geometry, really. But looking at these patent sketches submitted in 1958 (and granted in 1961), make me happy that Lego didn’t have to live in an era where their efforts might be thwarted by a patent troll. Our childhoods would have been lesser because of it, even if we never realized it. More »

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach: Israel’s Least Appreciated Prime Minister

I’m not sure which is sadder, that Yitzchak Shamir died or that people didn’t really know that he was still alive. For Shamir certainly was Israel’s least appreciated Prime Minister amid presiding over some of the state’s greatest achievements. And what was that principal achievement? He kept the people safe.

NASA Video Gives A Tour Of The Moon (VIDEO)

Don’t have $155 million to buy a ticket to the moon? Worry not, because NASA’s got the next best thing: a video tour of the planet free of charge!

In the video, a narrator highlights key features including craters, astronaut trails, and the mysterious dark side of the moon.

“Altough the moon has remained largely unchanged during human history, our understanding of it and how it has evolved over time has evolved dramatically,” the video’s info section states. “Thanks to new measurements, we have new and unprecedented views of its surface, along with new insight into how it and other rocky planets in our solar system came to look the way they do.”

AMC dropped from Dish Network, cuts a new deal to stay on with AT&T U-verse

AMC dropped from Dish Network, still in negotiations with AT&T

As June expired, so did AMC’s contract with both Dish Network and AT&T U-verse. While negotiations continue with AT&T and its channels remain on for the moment, AMC is already firing at Dish for dropping its channel immediately (after shifting it to an entirely different channel number a few weeks ago), claiming no negotiations have even taken place. As we heard in May, AMC maintains that the real issue is a court case between the two over the Voom HD debacle. For its part, Dish is telling customers the problem is fee increases requested by AMC and “devaluing” its programming by offering it on iTunes, Netflix and Amazon.com. As a result it’s swapping in commercial-free HDNet Movies for AMC, and replacing two other AMC channels, WE and IFC, with Style and HDNet (soon to become AXS TV). We’ll see how these negotiations go — it’s not too bad now but let’s see how viewers react once the new season of Breaking Bad starts airing July 15th.

Update: As we went live, AT&T has announced it reached an agreement with AMC Networks, so it’s only Dish Network that’s on the hotseat now. [Thanks, @soulfliesfree]

PS Gourmet Coffee: South Boston Coffee Shop Commercial Is Kind Of The Best (VIDEO)

PS Gourmet Coffee is South Boston’s answer to Starbucks. It’s also the “Home of the Bucket,” although we have no idea what’s in that bucket. Maybe the most the wicked awesome cup of coffee you ever had.

We randomly came across this local ad and immediately fell in love with pretty much everything about it: the accents, the hair, the “nutty bahs.”

What makes PS Gourmet Coffee so great? As the gentleman in the ad says, “The trick is real ingredients, not syrup in every cup.” Not for nothin, dude, but you can’t argue with that.
