During the victory dance over the Court’s Obamacare decision, the West was on fire and record heat punished much of the rest of the country. It is hard not to draw the connection between our abject failure to address climate change and the septic politics that have infected Washington.

5 Myths About The Veepstakes
Posted in: Today's ChiliEvery presidential election cycle, once a party’s nominee becomes clear, we focus on the veepstakes. Who will Mitt Romney choose? Will he play it safe with a traditional pick, such as Walter Mondale in 1976 or Jack Kemp in 1996? Or take a chance, as John McCain did with Sarah Palin in 2008? Either way, there is no evidence that a vice presidential nominee plays a great part in voters’ decisions. But that doesn’t stop us from overhyping the selection process.

Focal Locus Desk & Chair Set Won’t Allow You to Sit or Stand, But I Still Want One
Posted in: Today's ChiliI’ve seen all kinds of office chairs and desks, but I’m pretty sure the Locus series by Focal is the first one that I’ve encountered that encourages people to be in a position halfway between standing up and sitting down. It seems silly at first, but I can actually see myself being comfortable on it. Too bad I can also see myself not being able to afford it.
The Locus desk is made of aluminum, hardwood laminate and polymer. The surface can be inclined up to 18º and the legs can be raised and lowered. But the quirk of the Locus lies in the seat, which as you can see is a bit like a bar stool, except it has a long base that tilts up. The seat itself is not fixed to the base and can be moved up to 10º side to side. The idea is that your butt to be barely on the cushion and your legs stretched out with your feet leaning on the tip of the base.
Aside from the lack of back support, the biggest downside to the Locus line is the price tag. Focal is selling the seat for $500 (USD) and the desk for $950. These are already discounted introductory prices; the regular price will be $650 for the seat and $1150 for the desk. If you’re ready to stand down and sit up, head to Focal’s website to pre-order.

Wthr is the latest meteorological app to hit the iPhone and has had the internets going nuts because it was conceived around Dieter Rams’ 10 principles of good design. But personally, I think the look and overall function of the app is just OK. I’d much rather have an apps that look or behaves along the lines of Clear, or Agenda or Buzz, and not something that is trying to visually mimic a piece of hardware from the 1960s. Am I crazy? There is no news here. Nothing could be more every day – literally. I did something that one in 20 Chicagoans do on weekdays and something that I’ve done too many times to count. I took a ride on the CTA Red Line.
Seeing the city’s segregation does not take feats of investigative reporting. No database. No fancy equipment. No special occasion.
Our segregation is visually stark on the Red Line. And I wanted to document it.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Jerry Brown’s ambitious plan to start building the nation’s first dedicated high-speed rail line is set for a pivotal vote by the Legislature this week with some state lawmakers still skeptical about spending billions in the Central Valley.
The Democratic governor is pushing lawmakers to authorize $2.7 billion in voter-approved state bonds for construction on the first 130-mile stretch of high-speed rail from Madera to Bakersfield. Brown has made the massive infrastructure project one of his priorities for the year and says the state has to act fast in order to capture billions of dollars in additional federal support.
