Samsung joins Intel and TSMC, buys stake in chipmaker ASML

Samsung’s round of cash-flashing continues with a $629 million purchase of a three-percent stake in ASML. It’s joining Intel and TSMC in pumping money into the Dutch business, developing tooling for chip-making machines with Extra Ultraviolet Lithography (EUV) designed to “extend Moore’s Law.” It’ll also help reduce the cost of future silicon, since it’ll enable the companies to use wider silicon wafers along the manufacturing line. Given that Samsung’s investment caps of a project to raise nearly $5 billion in cash and that ASML’s home is just five miles west of PSV Eindhoven’s stadium, we just hope they threw in a few home tickets for their trouble.

Nexus 7 on sale in France, Germany and Spain

Google’s Nexus 7 has continued its assault on the European tablet market, with sales of the 7-incher beginning in France, Germany and Spain. The Android 4.1 Jelly Bean slate had until now been limited to the US, Canada, UK and Australia, with early demand following its Google IO 2012 debut seeing online orders taking weeks to arrive.

That supply chain crunch appears to have been alleviated now, with Google listing ship estimates of less than a week for new online orders. The 8GB entry-level model is still being sold as a Google exclusive, with third-party retailers able to offer the 16GB version.

In Europe, the 8GB Nexus 7 is priced at €199 while the 16GB version is €249, roughly matching the US and UK prices when respective sales tax is factored in. What isn’t yet available is the breadth of cloud services that US buyers have to choose from, such as music downloads and digital magazines.

Google hasn’t confirmed any launch timescale for those services to hit the Play store outside of the ‘States, though the Nexus 7 still holds its own as a web-browsing device. More on the tablet in our review.

LG Optimus Vu/Intuition press shot spotted, possible 15th September release

Last week we reported that the LG Optimus Vu “phablet” could be rebranded as the LG Intuition when it eventually makes its way onto Verizon. While we’re sure many of you guys are probably aware of how the LG Optimus Vu looks like, the folks at DroidDog have received an image of what appears to be the press shot of the device when it arrives on Verizon, and more interestingly it seems that a 15th of September release date has been speculated. This is thanks to a date which was spotted in the press shot of the image, as dates and icons in press shots are usually pretty good indicators of when the device could be launching. However since Verizon has yet to actually announce the device, let alone give it a release date, we suggest you take this with a grain of salt for now but do check back with us in September as hopefully an official release date will be given.

Sony Xperia Tablet accessories leaked

With the Sony Tablet P and the Tablet S being released last year, it would not be a stretch of the imagination to think that new Sony tablets could be released this year. It wasn’t too long ago that alleged press shots of the upcoming Sony Xperia Tablet were leaked, and purported specs were revealed as well, giving the device a NVIDIA Tegra-3 quad-core processor, 16-64GB of storage, a 9.4” 1280×800 display, an 8MP rear-facing camera, a 1MP front-facing camera, a 6,000mAh battery and Android 4.0 ICS on board.

While those specs have yet to be confirmed, photos of the accessories to complement the Xperia Tablet have been spotted which includes a keyboard case, a stand that allows the tablet to be orientated in portrait or landscape mode, and a media dock which basically amplifies the sound coming from the tablet and comes with a remote control as well. Those are some pretty decent accessories, especially the keyboard case which we can’t help but feel is reminiscent of the Microsoft Surface tablet and its own keyboard case. It has been suggested that the Sony Xperia Tablet could be announced at IFA which will be taking place this week, so check back with us for the details.

Samsung down, Nokia up, Google glib: The Apple fallout continues

Dismayed investors have wiped almost 7.5-percent from Samsung‘s stock as the aftermath of the $1bn Apple trial continues to ripple, though Nokia saw a surprise burst of support as Google comments failed to reassure. The search giant attempted to distance “the core Android operating system” from Apple’s patent claims, but the market obviously didn’t see sufficient support and sold Samsung shares in droves. Nokia has been a surprising beneficiary, however, the Finnish company’s stock price up almost 11-percent at time of publication.

That could well be a sign that investors believe Windows Phone is a more solid platform – in at least patent terms – than Android. Microsoft has been on top of its patent situation, inking cross-licensing deals with a number of big names in the mobile business, including Samsung. Nokia is expected to reveal a new range of Windows Phone 8 based Lumia devices in early September, and while the OS has struggled to penetrate the market beyond single-digit share so far, the rise in confidence around the ailing Finns implies at least some confidence in legal indemnity.

Google, meanwhile, broke its silence on the Apple vs. Samsung verdict with a brusque comment on the importance of innovation and affordability. The company claims a combination of patent re-examination and differences between Samsung’s customization of Android and the core OS mean it is in the clear from Apple’s litigation:

“The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims. Most of these don’t relate to the core Android operating system, and several are being re-examined by the U.S. Patent Office. The mobile industry is moving fast and all players – including newcomers – are building upon ideas that have been around for decades. We work with our partners to give consumers innovative and affordable products, and we don’t want anything to limit that” Google

Whether buyers will be anywhere as swayed by Nokia and Windows Phone’s stability as investors are, however, seems unlikely. Samsung may have been hit hard in the wallet – final damages could even be tripled to $3bn when the US judge has her final say – but the company’s products are still high-profile and, arguably, even better known thanks to the attention of the court case itself.

In contrast, Windows Phone 8 is still an unproven entity, and Microsoft’s decision to break support for Windows Phone 7 users moving forward – leaving them with a UI reskin in the shape of Windows Phone 7.8, but stuck on the old kernel and with limited long-term prospects for new apps – could well chew through any early-adopter support built up with the first generations of phones.

LG Optimus G photo spotted online

Earlier we had reported that LG had in a way confirmed some of the specs of its upcoming flagship phone, which many believe will be known as the LG Optimus G. Unfortunately the design of the phone has yet to be seen, but thanks to the folks at AndroidMX, they have managed to get their hands on the device as pictured above. With confirmed specs pointing at a 1280×768 True HD IPS+ Display and a quad-core processor powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 chipset, the folks at AndroidMX are saying that that the phone “really flies”.

With IFA taking place in Berlin this week, many are speculating that LG could be unveiling the device then, although LG did mention earlier that no new smartphones will be revealed then, so perhaps the LG Optimus G will be getting an event of its own. In any case we will be covering IFA so hopefully we will have more details then, if not be sure to check back with us regularly as we will be keeping an eye on this and will post once we have more information.

LG Optimus G’s display confirmed to be 1280×768 True HD IPS+

LG logoA couple of days ago, LG launched a new website which was basically dedicated to its upcoming LG Optimus G Android handset, probably LG’s most powerful Android handset to date. The website did confirm several features, such as its quad-core capabilities, although other specs such as its screen size, camera, memory, design, etc. remain to be seen. However in a recent press release, LG has apparently confirmed the display of the upcoming handset and has put it at 1280×768, giving the phone’s display a pixel density of 320ppi. LG has also confirmed that the display will be a True HD IPS+ Display and claims it is sharper than AMOLED which is probably a dig at its competitor, Samsung, who usually uses AMOLED displays as one of the features to market their phones with.

Additional details of the upcoming device includes a new battery which LG claims is 60% more efficient and will have a charge cycle of 800, which is approximately 300 more than the average smartphone battery. We expect LG to unveil all the details and the design of the phone at IFA, so if you’d like an alternative to all the Samsung Galaxy S3 and HTC One X Android phones out there, perhaps the LG Optimus G might be a phone worth keeping an eye out for. Price drop in Sony NEX-5N suggests NEX-5R’s announcement could be imminent

We’ve been hearing plenty of rumors of the upcoming Sony NEX-5R and the NEX-6, with the former expected to be announced later this week, while the NEX-6 will most likely see an announcement in September. While it remains to be seen if either announcement date pans out, the folks at Sony Alpha Rumors have spotted that the Sony NEX-5N has had its price slashed by $100, most likely in anticipation of the Sony NEX-5R, its successor. Of course this is merely speculation at this point in time, but it would not be a complete stretch of the imagination if it were true. In any case as a quick recap for those who might have missed the news, the Sony NEX-5R has been rumored to feature a new image sensor, faster AF, WiFi capabilities and also an accompanying app for smartphones that allows the camera to be controlled remotely. It has also been speculated that it will be priced at $699 which will basically take over the NEX-5N’s price point. In any case with its rumored announcement expected for this Wednesday, we only have a couple of days to wait to see if they pan out, so stay tuned.
