Majority of smartphone users rarely exceed 2GB of data every month, according to recent survey

There was quite a bit of fuss kicked up when carriers started to end unlimited data plans as this meant that users who used a lot of data had to pay for overages. Usually this resulted in highly expensive bills as charges for over-the-limit data can be quite expensive. That being said, a recent survey conducted by NPD has revealed that a vast majority of smartphone users rarely exceeded 2GB of data usage per month, and at the same time discovering that amongst all the carriers, T-Mobile users were considered to be the most “data hungry” with 11% of its subscribers using more than 3GB a month. Its competitors, AT&T and Verizon, had 4% and 3% of its users exceeding 3GB respectively.

This survey was conducted using the built-in  data usage feature on Android phones and was collected from 1,000 smartphone users. Apparently the reason for T-Mobile’s figures to be so high was due to a younger subscriber base who used their data for streaming music and video. What do you guys think? Is NPD’s study accurate? Do you find yourself doing the same things on your smartphone even after unlimited data plans have been discontinued?

RIM files patent for automatic blog drafting on mobile devices

With faster network speeds these days and with our smartphones and tablets becoming more than capable of replacing our laptops for certain activities, such as typing emails, quick photo edits, checking Facebook, it is no surprise that some have turned to their mobile devices to type up blog posts while on the go. That and being connected to data networks allows users to post blog posts as soon as they’re done, instead of having to search for a WiFi hotspot or get a modem dongle. It seems that RIM has taken that into consideration as a recent patent filing was discovered (via Engadget) for a patent that allows for the automatic drafting of a blog entry. (more…)

Tiger Woods Back Injury: Ailing Star Fires 69 In Barclays Round 2 But Watney, Garcia Share Lead

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — A common phrase this year – “Tiger’s back” – took on a new meaning Friday at The Barclays.

Woods felt a twinge in his lower back when he awoke and felt pain throughout the second round at Bethpage Black. He overcame a bogey-bogey start, struggled in the simple task of retrieving the ball from the cup and stayed well within range of Nick Watney and the resurgent Sergio Garcia, who shared the lead going into the weekend.

Great White Shark Snacks On Seal Carcass Off Massachusetts Coast, As Family Films From Boat (VIDEO)

A tuna fishing expedition turned unexpectedly dramatic Wednesday morning when a Rhode Island family found itself the inadvertant audience of a great white shark’s breakfast buffet.

Peter Mottur, a Portsmouth, R.I., native, and his wife, Debbie, children Abigail and Charlie and mother, Libby, were hanging out on their boat around 8:30 a.m. when they spotted the shark near the south tip of Monomoy Island, off Chatham, Mass., only a few hundred feet off the beach.

As Mottur maneuvered his craft closer, the group observed a dead, gray seal floating in the bay with a fin circling it. Family members whipped out their cameras and managed to capture the ensuing meal with both still and video images recorded over a 10-minute span.

Apple damages vs Samsung: ZERO

In the Apple vs Samsung case here in the USA over patents and design on both parties parts, it appears that Samsung’s claims have fallen completely flat. Samsung challenged Apple in this case on patent claims for UTMS standard technology as well as several other smaller items. Across the board, Apple was found not guilty – no wrongdoing in ay way at all.

Apple was not found guilty of infringing on patent 711, 893, 460, or 516. Damages owed to Samsung by Apple were found to be zero. Apple did attempt to stop Samsung from cutting them down with a claim that Samsung breached their obligations to the public when developing the UTMS standard, but the jury found this to not be true.

Similarly, Apple was not able to prove by preponderance of the evidence that Samsung had violated Section 2 of the Sherman Antitrust Act by creating a monopoly on one or more technology markets related to the UMTS standard. Apple did, however, prove that Samsung is barred by patent exhaustion that enforcing patents 516 and 941 against Apple – this is good for Apple because it essentially relieves them of any guilt in using this technology because Samsung doesn’t have the right to keep it all to themselves – so to speak.

Have a peek at the timeline below to see several other bits of the verdict and check some of the more important moments in the trial as it went down over the past few weeks as well. This trail has been rather important already, and will continue to be a precedent through the future as well – watch out for continued patent pushes through the future, and for Apple to be right at the tip of the news tip – one way or another.
