Genetically Engineered Bacteria Will Someday Make Biofuel From Carbon Dioxide [Science]

Imagine a bacteria that could not only suck the excess CO2 out of the air, but turn that waste gas into a clean-burning biofuel for cars. If the current research on genetically-engineered bacteria goes to plan at MIT, these wonder creatures could help solve our energy and climate woes. More »

Fujitsu Stylistic Q702 and LifeBook T902 convertibles show up with Windows 8, we go hands-on (video)

Fujitsu Quattro Q702 and Tercel T902 Windows 8 laptops handson

The annual Hong Kong Computer & Communications Festival is usually just flooded with discounted computer products and booth babes, so we were pleasantly surprised when we spotted a couple of unreleased Windows 8, dual-digitizer devices at the Fujitsu booth. Pictured above is the Stylistic Q702 “Quattro,” an 11.6-inch tablet-cum-laptop that was announced last month. This particular unit sported an Intel Core i5-3427U chip (capped at 2.3GHz instead of 2.8GHz), a vibrant IPS panel, a fingerprint scanner, front and back cameras, 4GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD — twice the announced capacity, for some reason. Much like the ASUS Transformers, undocking the tablet was only a matter of pulling the latch on the hinge, but we found the latch to be rather stiff to operate. Hopefully this is just a prototype issue. Other than that, we just wish the final keyboard dock will somehow get a slight weight reduction: for the screen size, 1.88 pounds isn’t too bad for the tablet alone, but together with the heavy keyboard, the Q702 could become a nightmare for regular travelers.

The second prototype lurking at the back of the booth was the bulkier LifeBook T902 “Tercel,” a 13.3-inch convertible laptop that was unveiled alongside the Q702 last month. According to its label, this swivel-hinged machine packed a Core i7-3520M, 8GB of RAM, 500GB 7,200rpm hard drive, Blu-ray burner, LTE radio and a 72Wh (6,700mAh) battery. Oh, and there’s also a fingerprint scanner below the display. While the software failed to reverse the screen rotation after we flipped the screen back to laptop mode, it was in general just as responsive as the Q702, though the hardware felt more solid and ready. With this in mind plus the Windows 7 label and Wacom label below the keyboard, we wouldn’t be surprised if the T902 comes out before the Q702. Until then, feel free to check out our impromptu hands-on video of the Q702 after the break.

Samsung Galaxy Stellar Expected To Hit Verizon With ‘Starter Mode,’ $99 Price Tag

stellar

It’s no secret by now that Verizon plans to launch a device called the Galaxy Stellar in the near future — the short-lived EvLeaks Twitter account posted a picture of it before going silent — but a recently leaked image has shed a bit more light on the new mid-range device.

Expect the Stellar to hit shelves with a $99 price tag in tow, though exactly when that will happen is still up in the air.

There aren’t any specs to dissect just yet, but the image offers up more than its share of peculiarities to mull. Aside from keeping the oddly pointy chin seen in its predecessor the Droid Charge, the forthcoming Stellar seems to have yet another trick up its sleeve: starter mode.

The image offers few hints as to how starter mode actually works beyond claiming it’s easy to use, but it’s probably safe to expect a smaller number of reconfigured homescreens complete with handy shortcuts to commonly used features.

Interestingly, another device from a completely different manufacturer — the poorly-named Pantech Marauder — also has a “starter mode,” which raises an logical question. I thought the inclusion of a pared-down interface was thoughtful touch on Pantech’s part, but now that Samsung is getting into the game I have to wonder if Verizon is pushing the starter mode decision from their end. If so, that could mean that future Verizon smartphones may have similarly split personalities; representatives from the carrier haven’t yet gotten back to me on that.

Rounding out the package are some pre-loaded Amazon apps, that I think Droid-Life is reading a bit too much into. Verizon has historically loaded up their devices with the Kindle and Amazon MP3 store apps (which handily cover the “shop” and “stay entertained” angles played up in the copy), though I’m holding out hope the folks at Verizon buck the trend and pre-load the Amazon Appstore just to see what happens.

Even more Grand Theft Auto V screenshots released by Rockstar

Like clockwork, Rockstar has released another round of Grand Theft Auto V screenshots. The developer has been slowly releasing these screenshots throughout the week, starting with three on Monday and another three on Wednesday. By the time Wednesday’s screenshots had hit, we assumed that Rockstar would release another batch today, and it turns out we were right.

This time around, however, there are four screenshots instead of just three. Pretty awesome, right? Monday’s screenshot gave us a look at transportation, Wednesday’s offered a glimpse at leisure activities, but today it’s all business baby. As with the screenshots from earlier in the week, these ones don’t give much away, but you should be used to nondescript teases by now if you’re a fan of Rockstar.

In the images, we have a police officer chasing what appears to be a person stealing a car from the back of a semi truck, a small plane flying over a rather scenic river, the necessary and inevitable car chase (complete with an extremely low-flying helicopter) and finally, in what might just be the most detailed GTA V screenshot yet, we have an image of a man aiming his gun at a police helicopter that has him in the spotlight. This brings the total number of Grand Theft Auto V screenshots to 10 for the week, though as stated above, we still don’t know all that much about the game itself.

Rockstar has obviously planned it that way, wanting us to guess at what we’ll be getting with Grand Theft Auto V as it slow lets new details trickle out. Sadly, it looks like this is the end of the new Grand Theft Auto V media for a while, but Rockstar does say that it will be back in a few weeks with more. Whatever Rockstar will be revealing next, we’ll have it for you right here at SlashGear, so be sure to keep checking back.

Townsquare Media buys what’s left of MOG

MOG playing XX music

Beats’ acquisition of MOG ultimately carved the company into two pieces, if not quite evenly: it left both the blog content as well as a music-oriented ad network that’s popular, if without nearly as much cachet for the technology crowd as the streaming audio. Entertainment outlet Townsquare Media must have seen a bargain in the making given that it just swept in to buy MOG’s remaining parts. The deal, which AllThingsD understands is worth $10 million, will see the MOG name wiped for good as the ad network and sites slip into Townsquare’s collection. While anti-climactic, it still marks the formal end to a significant chapter in cloud music — MOG at one point was going toe-to-toe with the likes of Rdio and Rhapsody, and it now exists only as a memory.

Diablo 3 Error 3006 pays a visit again

Sometime in the middle of May this year, we talked about how a potentially game breaking bug has been discovered in Diablo 3, only to have the good people over at Blizzard fix it. Well, fast forward to today, and you would know that earlier in the morning of August 24, Diablo 3 once again stared at one of its opening day bugs in the face without any seeming effect in fixing it, at least not until later. Well, Error 3006 is back yet again, which means gamers who want to connect to play the game might not be able to do so if they are affected by this Error.

Not only that, to continue from where Error 3006 left off, it might also have some sort of connection with the Auction House in terms of reliability and what not. One ought to bear in mind that the Auction House problem has yet to go commented on by Blizzard staff back when this story first broke. Many servers might be up and running now, but there are folks who realized that the Diablo 3 Auction House just ain’t working as intended. Keep our fingers crossed that

I’m very particular about what kind of case I get for my iPhone. I have but a few, and it can take me a long time to find ones that appeal to me. But I have to say that the durable SYSTM iPhone cases look pretty spiffy.

There are five models to choose from, and each of them has got some interesting design elements. They have raised side bumpers, reinforced corners, and the Vise, Chisel and Hammer models even have Poron XRD cushioning foam to protect your precious iPhone from drops and bumps.
