Remote control driven car from China

Have you watched “Tomorrow Never Dies”, where 007 controlled his BMW 750iL with his Ericsson handset? Well, that was certainly fantasy back in the day, but just like how most folks wondered when will large scale touchscreen technology arrive in the real world after watching Minority Report and seeing how tablets and smartphones are all pervasive today, we would not bet against a remote controlled car being on our streets in a decade’s time, either. What you see above is actually a China-made remote controlled car, but it is still a far cry from what James Bond’s BMW 750iL is capable of.

For starters, this full-sized, road-legal sedan that can be controlled via a remote control is extremely limited in its mobility. We are looking at a maximum speed that would be unable to overtake your everyday jogger – a mere 2km/h, tops. Not only that, it will function when the operator is no more than 33 feet away. The thing is, this is the first full size remote control sedan to date, and we do hope to see vast improvements made to it soon, especially concerning the top speed.

Sony LiveAction AR features a Japanese schoolgirl

We live in a stereotypical world, and hence, it is no surprise to hear that Sony attempts to correct the deficiencies that are associated with the field of augmented reality, especially that niggling feeling of interacting with a lively albeit unrealistic 2D character. How does Sony go about addressing this particular issue? Well, we are looking at a new kind of technology known as “LiveAction AR,” which unsurprisingly, has a Japanese schoolgirl starring in it for starters. How about that for a standard issue stereotype, huh?

A demonstration of LiveAction AR showed off an augmented reality woman who stepped out of a wall poster, where she will then interact with you, the viewer. The creepy part (or some others might call it brilliant) would be this – whenever you move around, the character as well as her eyes will also follow in tow, making this the digital version of the Mona Lisa. Talk about increasing the realism factor with a pair of following eyes! Check out the video above to know more about how Sony’s LiveAction AR works in the real world.

Samsung: Want a 16-megapixel camera with Xenon flash on your Galaxy S3?

It can be said that the Samsung Galaxy S3 is the South Korean manufacturer’s best attempt at churning out a smartphone to date, and they have done quite the bang up job as well. Here is a rumor that most probably would not end up as true – a new and improved Galaxy S3. We are talking about the same Galaxy S3 body being put on offer, where it will carry a similar 4.8″ HD Super AMOLED display sans any physical buttons, with the flavor of the day being a 16-megapixel sensor that has 10x optical zoom capability to boot, in addition to a Xenon flash as well to capture images under extremely low light conditions. Purportedly running on the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, nothing else other than the camera specifications were revealed, so it remains to be seen whether the processor underneath the hood will be given a nice upgrade kick in the butt.

Needless to say, with a higher resolution sensor for its camera, this Galaxy S3 variant will be thicker than usual, especially when you need to take into consideration the alleged 10x optical zoom and a pop-out Xenon flash.

Sony patent wants to make advertising more interactive

Sony patents want to make advertising more interactive

We all know adverts are a necessary evil, which is why different companies are trying to make them more personalized, more engaging or just plain get rid of them. In a recently granted patent, Sony outlines its ideas for next-gen advertising on network-connected devices — essentially to make it more interactive. Many of the instructional diagrams involve PS3 accessories in the home setting, but the focus isn’t just on adverts as mini-games, which itself is nothing new. Other suggestions for keeping your interest include in-ad purchasing, casting votes or selecting the genre of commercials. To speed up, or get ads off your screen, Sony would have you performing small tasks or — more sinisterly — shouting brand names when prompted. Whether such immersive advertising will ever be employed is anyone’s guess, but we’re sure you’re smart enough to know they’re just tricks. So who’s up for a McDonald’s then?

Green and Gadget-y

Yep, another unique docking station. The ideas never end. And they keep getting better. As electronic fanatics we are constantly looking for something new. And greenery is never a bad addition to our environment.

Meet the Bloombox. It is a one of a kind docking station providing two major differences. First, it amplifies acoustics by 30%, the designers claim. Save on the volume! Secondly, they have designed the unit to contain a customizable planter for small greenery. Designed by Nicholas Hyde and Brennan Conroy, it is currently listed on Kickstarter for a $50 pledge which funds the mold for production and gets you a unit once produced. They are more than halfway to their fundraising goal to make Bloombox a reality. It is expected to retail for $20 once available (hopefully later this year). Forewarning, it will require use of your own iPhone cord.

Think about it. Aesthetically and audiologically it would be a nice addition to any room. And you can add foliage to make it NOT look like another piece of electronic equipment. So get behind a unique take on a docking station and give that little greenery a place to live. Also, it would make a perfect holiday gift for the iPhone user that wants a slightly little different home for their device.

Nico the Robot Recognizes Self in the Mirror

Justin Hart and Brian Scassellati of Yale University have nothing better to do, so they thought they would tinker with robots and doom us all. Recently, they taught a humanoid robot named Nico to recognize its own reflection in the mirror. That doesn’t sound so bad right? Well, it’s fine until they decide one day that everything that doesn’t look like them has to go. We aren’t there yet thankfully. Right now this is just a cute story about a robot and a mirror. For now.
nico robot
Nico is part of an experiment to see whether a robot can tackle a test of self-awareness called the mirror test. To pass the test an animal or a robot has to recognise that a mark on the body it sees in the mirror is on its own body. Only dolphins, orcas, elephants, magpies, humans and a few other apes have passed the test so far.

The robot has had to learn more about itself. He isn’t done yet. So the team plans to teach Nico how to recognise where its torso is, where it’s head is and so on. The shape, the color and texture as well.

“What excites me is that the robot has learned a model of itself, and is using it to interpret information from the mirror,” says Hart. I guess one man’s excitement is another’s sheer terror. Soon there will be vain robots everywhere.

Samsung grabs Kate Upton for Galaxy promotion

This month it’s become apparent that the folks at Samsung brought on a couple of celebrity models to their recent NYC event for the Galaxy Note 10.1. Both models Irina Shayk and Kate Upton of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue fame were in attendance for what must have been Samsung-payed gigs. You’ll also see Upton carrying an iPhone – certainly not scoring her any brownie points with the company whose biggest rival is Apple.

The event took place on the 15th of August and revealed the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, a device that takes Samsung’s 10.1-inch tablet form factor and adds the capabilities of the S-Pen from the original Galaxy Note. We also had the opportunity to present you with a full review of the Galaxy Note 10.1 in the meantime.

In the photos above and below from both KnottyCelebs and Zimbio, you’ll see Shayk posing in front of some Samsung signs holding nothing at all, and Upton posing with the Galaxy Note 10.1. The Note that Upton carries shows that she’s used the S-Pen to sign a photo taken with what we assume must have been the device’s camera.

LG Singapore confirms Ice Cream Sandwich headed for Optimus 2X, Black, 3D, LTE, Prada

What do the following smartphones from LG have in common? I am referring to the Optimus 2X, Black, 3D, LTE, Prada, and the correct answer would be this – all of them have yet to receive the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, but we are pleased to say that this is no longer the case, at least in the days and weeks ahead. Who would have thought that LG Singapore would be the party to reveal information concerning an Ice Cream Sandwich update for the LG Optimus 2X, Black, 3D, LTE, and Prada?

According to LG Singapore’s Facebook post, the Ice Cream Sandwich bandwagon will arrive on the LG Optimus 2X, Optimus Black, Optimus 3D, Prada and Optimus LTE “in due time”. It is rather interesting to note that the LG Optimus Black was officially denied an update not once, but twice already, and yet it has been brought back ‘from the dead‘, so to speak, with the Optimus Black being prepared for the Ice Cream Sandwich soon.

Google patents smart glove for a touch of Minority Report

I am quite sure for many of us who first watched Minority Report, we were blown away by the user interface that saw the use of a special kind of gloves that worked in tandem with the touchscreen display. Well, Google might eventually venture into this particular field if the latest patent is of any indication. Dubbed as the Google Smart Glove, it was described in a recently issued patent as “Seeing with your hand”. I suppose this sheds new light on what some might say, “Speak to the hand, cause the ear, it ain’t listening” lingo.

To put it in a nutshell, the Google Glove is filled to the brim with electronics, where the fingertips carry cameras, while the rest of the glove has embedded devices such as a compass, a slew of gyroscopes, accelerometers and other motion detectors. Heck, why not cram in a CPU while you are at it, in addition to some RAM and storage space, all on the palm of your hand, and as marketing parlance would put it – power at your fingertips. Bear in mind that the “Seeing with your hand” patent remains as so for the moment, so Smart Glove and Project Glass integration can be considered to be years away still.
