Nikon D600 rumored to be revealed on the 13th of September, expected to be half the price of the D800

Back in June, there was a leaked image that purportedly belonged to the Nikon D600. It was expected to be one of the more “affordable” full frame DSLR cameras to be introduced in the market, but so far apart from leaked specs and rumors, no official date has been revealed. Thanks to the folks at Nikon Rumors, it seems that we may now have a possible release date for the D600 along with a possible price as well. If the rumors are to be believed, it seems that we can expect to see Nikon launch the D600 on the 13th of September, which is about a week before Photokina kicks off, and where Nikon is said to be revealing more cameras as well.

As far as its rumored specs are concerned, if you missed our earlier coverage, the D600 will sport a 24.7MP FX sensor capable of shooting ISO 100-6400, a 3.2” LCD on the back and record videos in Full HD mode. Its pricing has also been rumored to be half that of the D800 (which could differ depending on which retailer you buy it from). In any case we suggest you take this with a grain of salt for now, but be sure to check back with us in the future for more updates and possible official information!

Adobe Revel 1.5 released with new UI, text captions and auto-syncing albumsAdobe’s cloud-based photo storage and editing app has been enjoying its new name since it hopped off the Carousel, and now it’s appreciating a feature bump too. Nikon D7000 listed as being discontinued by manufacturer on Amazon.de

The other day we reported that it seemed that the Nikon D700 had been discontinued in the US. However thanks to a spotting on Amazon.de by the folks at Nikon Rumors, it seems that the online retailer has listed the Nikon D7000 as having been discontinued by the manufacturer. It seems a little sudden and we’re not sure if Amazon meant the D700, not the D7000, or maybe we could be looking at a hint that the Nikon D7000 will be meeting its end very soon. In any case if the D7000 is a camera you were considering, you should probably make your decision soon! So, any photographers out there think that the D7000’s discontinuation could be for real, or did Amazon make a mistake?

Sony NEX-5R rumored for August 29th reveal

The other day we reported on alleged leaked photos of the upcoming Sony NEX-5R. While the photo itself looks pretty convincing, what we are lacking at the moment is a proper release date. Well thanks to the folks at Sony Alpha Rumors, it seems that photographers who are looking forward to additional Sony mirrorless cameras, the NEX-5R is rumored for an official announcement on the 29th of August. Assuming those dates are to be believed, we can look forward to seeing official photos and official specs after all the rumors. For those who have not been keeping up with the rumors, word has it that the Sony NEX-5R will sport a brand new 16MP image sensor and WiFi connectivity. As for its NEX-6 sibling, word has it that it will be announced in September instead. We’ll take this with a grain of salt for now, but given that we’re only a week away from the 29th of August, we guess we won’t have to wait too long to find out if the rumors are true!

Batarang Pocket Knives: The Dark Knife Rises

Forget tiny little pocket knives. This Batarang Pocket Knife steps things up a notch. It’s the kind of pocket knife that Batman himself would carry. Well, it comes in several bright colors that would appall The Dark Knight and his design sensibilities, but otherwise these Batarang knives look pretty awesome.

Batman Batarang Knife
It’s a Batarang, but it’s also a dual bladed pocket knife. When both blades are open it is basically an 11″ knife. Sure, it isn’t particularly practical, but it’s still a bladed weapon. It’s not supposed to cut your sandwich in half. It’s just supposed to look cool. The knives come in black, silver, red, pink, and purple. Three guesses which one the Batman prefers. They start at $8.18(USD) from Amazon.

ThinkGeek unveils new Star Wars gear

Earlier this morning I talked a bit about the Star Wars Wampa ice scraper. That is certainly the coolest way to get ice off your windshield during the winter I’ve ever seen. ThinkGeek also has some other new Star Wars theme gadgets that geeks will appreciate. I think a couple of these might spawn some new memes.

Behold the power of my fully functional tea infuser. Our resident Brit will appreciate the Death Star Tea Infuser that will sell for $19.99 when it comes in stock later this month. The tea infuser is a perfect stainless steel likeness of the Death Star with a little Tie Fighter on a chain so you can dip it into your glass of hot water to make your preferred tea.

One of my favorites is the Star Wars Lightsaber Ice Pop Makers. The kit comes with four light up lightsaber hilts. Two of the hilts look like Luke’s saber and two look like Vader’s saber hilt. You put whatever liquid you want into the saber molds and then freeze them to make your own popsicles. You can even press a button and make your frosty treats glow. These are expected to be in stock in November for $34.99.

The final product is for the Star Wars geek professionals out there. It’s called the Han Solo in Carbonite Business Card Case. You can pretty much figure out what this is from the name alone. It’s able to hold about a dozen business cards depending on how thick the card stock is. It’s estimated to be available in one to three weeks at $24.99.

Kodak Wants To Sell Film Business, Focus On Printers

Kodakfilm

Soon, Kodak will cease to be a film company. After spending almost a decade swirling the pot and the past eight months going directly down the drain, Kodak has decided to sell its traditional film businesses (and some other camera businesses) to become a fully commercial-focused businesses, with printers at center stage.

Technically, the other businesses Kodak wants to sell are called “personalized imaging” and “document imaging,” which includes those kiosks you find in stores to develop digital photos and a business that takes pictures of people riding roller coasters and such in theme parks.

The WSJ reports that this comes on the heels of a disappointing run to sell the company’s trove of 1,100 patents, which Kodak originally believed would be worth $2.2 billion – $2.6 billion. Unfortunately for the 100-year-old-plus company, the auction didn’t necessarily foster competition between the prospective buyers, with Apple, Google, and others wishing to form a consortium that would jointly purchase the patents.

In short, that would mean that those companies couldn’t use Kodak’s patents against one another in court, yet could pull freely from the technologies for their own products. It’s a win for everyone but Kodak, as the joint purchase has brought the price down. According to WSJ sources, bids have come in around $250 million.

In January, Kodak filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection as it struggled to generate a positive cash flow during the digital camera boom. Considering Kodak actually invented the first digital camera, the company was incredibly late to that game, and it may have cost them the business.

Foursquare’s Magnetic Marketing Goes Mad Men With Promoted Updates

Foursquare's Magnetic Marketing Goes Mad Men With Promoted UpdatesIt was inevitable the game-like features of Foursquare’s ‘mayorships,’ ‘badges’ and ‘check-ins’ would ultimately pave a path to paid advertising. Yes, that unassuming little geolocation-based

amassed over 20 million registered users has decided to monetize.
Finally slipping into their big boy pants, Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai’s company have launched "Promoted Updates," with clients Madison Avenue ad agencies have been known to court over the years.

Astronomers discover twins to our Milky Way galaxy

Our Milky Way galaxy is a spiral galaxy and as special as it is, it’s certainly not the only galaxy of its kind in the universe. Astronomers have announced the discovery of two galaxies that are nearly a perfect match for the Milky Way. According to astronomers, spiral galaxies are common, but these newfound twin galaxies share other key features of our Milky Way.

Key features shared with these newly discovered galaxies, and the Milky Way include the fact that the twin galaxies both have their own satellite galaxies. Astronomers say that those satellite galaxies are very similar to our neighboring large and small Magellanic Clouds. The scientists report that only about 3% of the galaxies in the universe that are similar to the Milky Way also have companion galaxies.

That means that spiral galaxies having companion galaxies similar to the Magellanic Clouds are very rare. According to the scientists, only 14 galaxies similar to the Milky Way have been discovered with only these two being nearly identical to our home galaxy. Scientists involved in the project used data from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly survey that maps out about 340,000 galaxies local to the Milky Way in the grand scale of the universe to make the discovery.

Interestingly, the researchers say that the Magellanic Clouds won’t be around forever. One researcher says our two cloud galaxy companions will only be around for a few billion years more. On a human scale of time, that might as well be forever.
