Kodak keeps patent pimping and plans to sell imaging units

Photography giant Kodak has been conducting bankruptcy proceedings for a while. One cornerstone of emerging from bankruptcy as a viable company for Kodak has been to sell off a couple patent portfolios. So far, the patent auctions haven’t gone exactly as Kodak dreamed with lower than hoped for bids. Kodak has announced another tactic to help pay creditors and emerge from bankruptcy.

Kodak has now announced that it intends to sell its consumer film, photo kiosks, and commercial scanner businesses. Kodak will get assistance from Lazard Ltd as it tries to sell the units with the hope of completing the sales in the first half of 2013. Once the sale of Kodak’s personal imaging and document imaging units are complete Kodak will only have inkjet printers and commercial film units left.

Kodak’s commercial film unit sells film stock to the movie industry. Kodak is working on an extended patent auction as it attempts to raise money and interest in two different patent portfolios. So far, courts have prevented Apple from filing suit against Kodak over some of the patents Kodak wants to sell. Apple alleges that it owns some of the Kodak patents after it and Kodak worked together on a digital camera in the 90s.

The court previously ruled against Apple on two of the patents in question saying that Apple had waited too long to assert its ownership claim. The court has also previously denied Kodak a summary judgment on eight other patents stating that Kodak could renew its request with more details. Kodak says that 20 parties have signed agreements to view confidential information ahead of offering bids on the patent portfolios. Kodak and its creditors have agreed to extend the patent auction deadline beyond August 13. Apple expected the two patent portfolios to sell for around $2.6 billion. Sources claim that bids submitted so far have only been around $150 million-$250 million.

OnLive CEO stays with the company

It seemed like the failure of OnLive came out of nowhere when we first heard of it a few days ago. Everyone was excited about OnLive being supported on the Ouya console that did so well on Kickstarter and then rumors started late last week that OnLive was in serious trouble. Shortly after those rumors started we learned that OnLive was in dire financial straits.

A large portion of OnLive’s workforce was laid off, and the company began restructuring that led to smartphone maker HTC losing its $40 million investment. When things go so badly for a company, I expect to see the CEO and other executives move on, and new blood come in. That assumes the company is still viable at all. Therefore, it is somewhat surprising to me to hear that OnLive is keeping their CEO Steve Perlman.

An official statement was issued by OnLive this week giving more details on what’s going on at the company and what fans can expect moving forward. OnLive said in the statement that it has a new investor and assured subscribers that all their purchases, achievements, videos, and other content were still there and would not be interrupted. The company says it plans to continue operating its service 24/7 just as it has since launch.

OnLive announced that Perlman will continue as CEO and was concentrating on the major transition. Once the company transition is complete, OnLive said that Pearlman would focus on the company’s next product releases and promised more major announcements large and small. Those announcements include the Vizio CoStar and the Ouya console. Other major announcements are promised to be coming soon.

Fisker confirms Q&A outlining Karma woes and fixes, may establish council to talk issues in person

Fisker Karma mountain drive

Fisker has had more than its fair share of teething troubles with the Karma, but it has to be given credit for going out of its way to listen to early adopters. The hybrid car builder has confirmed to Autoblog that a question and answer session making the rounds is the official result of town hall discussions that have both acknowledged problems and promised fixes where they’re possible. The answers we’ve been given are a mix of sober realities and practical remedies. Drivers hoping for outright hardware upgrades to improve performance with existing Karmas will have to keep wishing; thankfully, a host of firmware fixes are on the way to improve at least the sedan’s Command Center system and mirrors. PR lead Roger Ormisher even hints that there could be an in-person council that would tackle concerns more directly than the remote pep talks. We’re mostly hoping for the day when Fisker stamps out the bugs and doesn’t need the Q&A to put Karma owners’ minds at ease.

Tim Cook wraps up his first year as Apple CEO

It hardly seems like it has been a year since Tim Cook took over as CEO of Apple. In fact, it has very close to a year since Steve Jobs passed away. That sad anniversary will happen on October 5. Cook has now been on the job for a year, and it’s hard to say he has done anything other than a fantastic job over at Apple. I think many people expected to see Apple on the decline after the death of Steve Jobs.

Apple has certainly thrived, and under Cook’s leadership with the company becoming the most viable firm on the planet with a $621 billion market cap only a few days before Cook’s one-year anniversary. Cook did inherit much of Apple’s success from Steve Jobs with huge demand in massive success with the iPhone and the iPad.

However, Mercury News reports that Cook has used his supply chain expertise, which is what landed him a job at Apple 14 years ago, to help Apple build and ship more and more gadgets all around the world. Interestingly, Mercury News believes that it could be five years or so before we get a clear picture of whether or not Apple can continue to be innovative with Cook at the helm. The launch of the iPhone 5 under Cook’s watch will be the first major product launch in the post Jobs Apple landscape.

I guess we can assume even with Steve Jobs gone almost a year, work on the next-generation iPhone, expected to launch in a few weeks, had begun before Jobs passed away. That could make the iPhone 5 one of the last products to bear Jobs’ fingerprints.

Samsung reveals the design story highlights for the Galaxy S III

Samsung reveals the design story highlights for the GSIII,

Samsung was very keen to let us know that its latest flagship phone was designed for humans. Now, the latest in the revealing series from the firm gives a little more insight into how the team went about that. For example, product designer Hangil Song explains how the rounded edges were inspired by pebbles in a stream, while sound engineer Joongsam Yun describes how they wanted to make the phone sound like a stroll in the forest. So, next time you’re barging your way down Mainstreet with four ounces of synthetic material blaring out Carly Rae Jepsen, remember, you’re doing it wrong.

IDC lowers PC shipment outlook

The global PC market has been taking a beating thanks to several factors, including some rather boring products and a sluggish global economy. Research firm IDC recently released its outlook for the global PC market and has announced that it expects the market to grow only 0.9% in 2012 thanks to slow mid-year shipments. The research firm expects 367 million PCs to ship this year.

If IDC’s predictions prove true 2012 would be the second consecutive year of growth below 2%. One big factor that has affected the market according to the research firm is slowing PC growth in Asia/Pacific that has reduced the impact of emerging market growth. While growth is slowing in emerging markets, mature areas like the US are also seeing shipments of PCs decline. IDC attributes the shipping decline in the US and other mature markets to factors other than weak economic conditions alone.

According to IDC, consumers are waiting to see what Windows 8 and ultrabooks will look like before purchasing. Considering the ultrabook has been on the market for a while now and people have pretty much stayed away I think the market has a very good idea of what the ultrabook looks like they simply don’t want one at the current price. IDC also says PC shipments are declining because people are spending on other products like smartphones and tablets.

IDC expects updates later this year, such as Windows 8, to revive PC growth, to some extent. IDC expects worldwide PC shipment growth to average 7.1% from 2013 through 2016, which is a decline from 8.4% compound annual growth rate IDC predicted previously.

“IDC remains optimistic that PC penetration opportunities in emerging markets will form the bulwark of the market and help sustain double-digit Portable PC growth in the long run. However, a host of all-too-familiar variables will lead to a subdued second half of the year with only consumer notebooks remaining in growth mode for all of 2012,” said Jay Chou, senior research analyst with IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. “Factors such as Windows 8 coupled with Ultrabooks could present a positive turn of events next year, but it also faces some initial hurdles; chief of which is that buyers must acclimate themselves to an operating system that is a dramatic departure from existing PC paradigms. The PC ecosystem faces some work to properly educate the market.”

TV Guide Mobile unveils new TV Companion App

No matter, how many channels you have, finding something good to watch can be a significant challenge on any given day. Years ago, we resorted to a printed magazine, TV Guide, to find cool shows to watch. With the on screen programming guide being common across pretty much every cable and satellite provider, TV Guide has fallen by the wayside as a printed guide. The company has announced a new mobile application that looks interesting.

The app is called the TV Guide mobile one-stop TV companion app. The most important part of the app according to TV Guide is the TV Guide’s Watchlist. The company says that this list is a groundbreaking feature with dozens of innovations based on user research and feedback. TV Guide says that over 500,000 people have already created Watchlists on TV Guide.com.

The Watchlist promises to make watching TV easier. The user can add shows, favorite sports teams, favorite actors, and favorite movies to their own personal Watchlist. The Watchlist will then show all of that content on a single app screen with all the ways the content is available to watch. That means if your favorite show is on normal TV, showing on an on demand channel, streaming channel, or DVD you can find it in one place.

The feature also allows the user to share and discuss their favorite programs via social networks and link to various services such as Hulu, HBO Go and others to watch the content. TV Guide says it will be adding additional sources over the coming weeks. The app also provides celebrity Watchlist videos the chair their favorite content and original editorial content. The iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch app also gets a new feature called New Tonight Trending showing what people are watching right then. The app is available for download now.

Kodak to sell the film business that made it so famous

Kodak selling film business

Kodak is selling off its renowned film arm in order to revive its moribund fortunes. It’ll join sales of the company’s patent portfolio, online gallery, commercial scanning, photo kiosk and theme park businesses so it can concentrate on a not-yet successful printer enterprise. It needs to raise more than $660 million to pay back creditors before it can emerge from Chapter 11, which it aims to do early next year — but not in any form that we’re likely to recognize.

Star Wars Wampa Ice Scraper Mitt is winter genius

Did you ever wonder what became of the hand Luke chopped off that Wampa that wanted to eat him on the icy planet of Hoth? I like to imagine that fuzzy Wampa arm crawled around the icy planet like Michael Caine’s mitt in the 80′s flick “The Hand.” Only the Wampa hand was nice and instead of trying to choke the life out of you, it would scrape the ice off your snow speeders windshield.

I think that would be a good use for a severed Wampa arm personally. If you live in a colder climate or just want to get ready for wintertime, ThinkGeek has an awesome Star Wars officially licensed gadget that you will want to add to your winter arsenal. The product is called the Star Wars Wampa Ice Scraper Mitt.

The scraper is expected to be in stock on October 9 and will sell for $24.99. One side of the ice scraper mitt has white fur and the other side has an ice scraper in the palm. The fingernails appear to be black vinyl. Naturally, the Wampa fur is fake, and it does have a bit red on the underside to show where Luke hacked it off.

ThinkGeek says that the plush ice scraper is warm so it should keep your hand as warm as Luke slumbering inside a recently gutted Tauntaun. The mitt measures 17 x 8.5-inches and the scraper is 3 x 4-inches. When the scraper is removed the mitt is also machine washable.

Victorinox offers refunds for secure USB drives in light of discontinued software updates

Victorinox offers refunds for secure USB drives in light of discontinued software updates

Software support and security certificates are coming to an end for Victorinox’s line of secure USB drives, but the firm announced on Facebook that it’s offering customers full refunds until December 31 if they’d like to return their products in light of the developments. In order to avoid losing data, owners of the flash drives should perform a backup before the encryption application meets its untimely end on September 15th. However, files stored on non-encrypted areas of the device will remain accessible without further action. The Slim, Secure and Presentation Master storage sticks can still be used as run-of-the-mill thumb drives after the cut-off date, but the Swiss Army Knife maker’s application will no longer be able to scramble or unscramble their contents.
