Heat resisting camouflage face paint

Most soldiers who fight on the battlefield wear some sort of face paint for camouflage purposes, and these tend to comprise of oil and wax, which will actually melt when exposed to intense heat. As we all know, the battlefield is not a place for the faint hearted, where it comes with its fair share of bombs and artillery which deliver intense heat and all round destruction. US scientists have managed to come up with a new kind of camouflage skin paint that has been touted to be able to withstand intense heat. This new face paint is touted to be funded by the US Department of Defense, and apart from the obvious camouflage purposes, it is meant to also deliver protection to the soldiers’ faces in the event of explosions, with firefighters also privy to such a benefit.

The research team claims that this new face paint can resist temperatures of up to 600C, which is as hot as a burning cigarette, although it will not last indefinitely as you have 15 seconds on the clock. It might not sound like much, but bear in mind that heatwaves from a bomb blast lasts for approximately two seconds, and is hot enough to cook skin.

Scarlet Motors promises an open EV design process

Scarlet Motors launching today, promises an open EV design process

It’s not every day that you see a new EV manufacturer get started; it’s even less common when the company promises a switch-up of the typical automaker’s formula. Scarlet Motors has made its formal debut with an aim towards the same kind of openness in its electric sports cars that founder Julien Fourgeaud would be familiar with from his days at Nokia and the Symbian Foundation. In addition to giving a peek behind the curtain, Tesla-style, Finland-based Scarlet wants future (and eventually current) drivers to influence the design choices themselves, both through a dedicated community as well as Facebook and Twitter. We’ll get more details in time, but those that just can’t wait can sign up to the community beta and help shape what might become their next ride.

Final Fantasy Dimensions tipped for end of August release

Final Fantasy Dimensions is an upcoming RPG title for the Android-powered platform, where it has been slapped with an end of August release date – at least this is what Siliconera claims. Originally released in episodes for feature phones in Japan, Final Fantasy Dimensions has received a stunning (relatively speaking here) graphical overhaul, and news of news – it is not only available on the Android platform, but iOS-powered devices, too, will be able to get a hold of it this coming August 31st. There is no word on whether the quoted August 31st date will apply to both platforms of just for iOS, and does it have anything to do with the western launch window or otherwise, but one thing’s for sure – soon is the right answer that you are looking for.

Remedy: Next-gen consoles are ‘a quantum leap’ over Xbox 360 and Sony PS3

Remedy, a gaming development house with a small team assigned to a next-gen game, has stepped forward to say that next generation consoles are considered to be a ‘quantum leap’ over the Xbox 360 and the Sony PS3, leaving us to wonder just how much more delicious the graphics will be by the time the next generation consoles arrive in the market. Alan Wake developer Remedy Entertainment, as mentioned earlier, are already working on a next-generation title, although as to which camp that title is headed to remains to be seen. (more…)

Go on, watch the video above and tell me that not once did you see yourself wearing the Glove Tricorder while posing stylishly like Tony Stark in his Iron Man suit. The Glove Tricorder is the latest creation from Med Sensation, where the objective of this medical peripheral is to make it easier not only for doctors, but patients as well, to diagnose specific diseases such as breast cancer in addition to other health problems like enlarged kidneys and other sub-dermal issues. Freescale Xtrinsic 3.0 touchscreen works even when wet

So you think that current touchscreen technology is the bomb, so much so that there is no more room for improvement – at least nothing that you can think of at the moment? We’ve got news for you, boys and girls, thanks to Freescale’s latest announcement of the Xtrinsic 3.0 touchscreen technology that is so sensitive, it is even capable of sensing your swipes and touches through a film of water, now how about that? Of course, we do know that most consumer electronics and water do not mix, but there are exceptions to the rule, and the Freescale Xtrinsic 3.0 would be one of the specially designed ones.

Meant to see action in industrial, medical and in-car systems, the Freescale Xtrinsic 3.0 will feature pre-built user interfaces that are more than ready to be added to any device. Apart from being able to work through water, it is also full well capable of withstanding noise, detect electrical interference and reduce false touches. We do wonder just when will it be licensed before it arrives in everyday pieces of consumer electronics.

US presidential campaign trail winds its way to Xbox Live on August 27th with Election 2012 Hub

US presidential campaign trail winds its way to Xbox Live on August 27th with Election 2012 Hub

Can’t get enough coverage of the US presidential race even with YouTube in the mix? Microsoft’s Election 2012 Hub for Xbox Live may be able to satisfy your inner political junkie. Redmond’s initiative will provide video of town hall events at both the Democratic and Republican national conventions, daily content from NBC and full coverage of results as ballots are cast and counted on November 6th. Throughout live streams of the debates, users will be able to rate the performances of public office hopefuls and see what marks other viewers give them in real-time. Information on voter registration, politicians and their take on issues will also be included. According to Microsoft, roughly 40 percent of Xbox-owning voters surveyed aren’t concretely committed to a candidate running for the Oval Office, placing them in the highly-prized swing voter category. The service won’t launch until the Grand Old Party’s powwow kicks off on August 27th, but we hear there’s plenty of relevant reading to keep you busy until then.

Angry Birds Space Red Planet coming this fall

I guess you could rank this partnership as inevitable – NASA and Rovio teaming up to bring a one-off, special Curiosity-themed episode within the universe of Angry Birds Space itself. If you must know, this particular episode will deliver another 20 levels of pig popping goodness, although the landscape will be that of the dry, arid soil of Mars. Flinging your birds through a zero gravity environment might get old for some of us, which is why Rovio decided to help keep things slightly fresher with a few bonuses introduced, including a chance for bird flinging gamers to learn more about Curiosity’s adventure on Mars as well as its purpose of existence (apart from exploring new worlds, which is a very broad definition).

It does not matter if you are an Android or iOS gamer, you will be able to enjoy the new chapter right after you perform an update, and Rovio also has plans for a full blown assault on the Red Planet when fall arrives. What next, Angry Birds Saturn?

Chrome Beta gets better mouse control for games

Look at what the cat dragged in with the latest Chrome Beta, where the team over at Google have come up with a new and improved Pointer Lock JavaScript API (a.k.a. mouse lock). To put it in plain English, this translates to gamers being able to enjoy superior, or at least, improved (for those who prefer to be less dramatic in their descriptions, of course) mouse control especially when it comes to 3D web apps and games such as first-person shooters. It will basically remove your cursor from the screen, while obtaining access to raw mouse movement data in order to let you pan the display’s view any way and direction that you wish without missing a beat. To get a better idea on how much more improved the mouse control is, why not spend some time with this particular WebGL Quake 3 map viewer and tell us what you think about it?

iPad mini to be announced separately from iPhone 5?

Apple logoOriginally, many pundits were thinking that come this September 12th, we could very well be looking at a double whammy of announcements from the fruity company itself, and the two heavy hitters would be the alleged iPad mini and the iPhone 5. Well, it seems that there are other viewpoints to this matter, with some parties suggesting that later in the Fall, Apple would hold a second event to introduce the iPad mini in addition to whatever else hardware that they have (like a new iPod, perhaps?) planned for the upcoming holidays.

Do you think that it makes more sense for Apple to break down the announcements and introduction of two highly anticipated devices, or do you prefer Cupertino to just get done and over with the announcements so that their accountants can prepare themselves to start counting the amount of money rolling into their coffers once the two devices go on sale? All in all, one just needs to exercise a healthy dose of patience, and until September 12th arrives, you might want to up on the salt intake for all Apple related news.
