343 Industries releases list of Halo 4 achievements

There’s still a few months left before Halo 4 is released to the eager masses, but while we wait, why not peruse the list of achievements we have posted after the jump? 343 Industries has released the entire line-up of cheevos for the highly-anticipated game, complete with a Gamerscore value for each. Be warned though: the list contains spoilers, so if you read further than this sentence and ruin the story, you’ll have no one to blame but yourself.

Writing on the Halo Waypoint blog, community manager Jessica Shea says that 343′s goal in creating the achievements for Halo 4 was to “reward milestones and increase replay value while balancing both difficulty and the breadth of game modes.” She also says that a secondary priority was to come up with ridiculous names for the achievements, and as you can see from the list below, the studio appears to have accomplished that. Have a look:

Some of them sound quite simple to get, while in true Halo fashion, others will be ridiculously hard. Halo 4 launches on November 6 for Xbox 360. Are you ready?

Scientists Discover How to Disarm Superbug Bacterias [Health]

A drug-resistant superbug could be catastrophic for our species, but how are we supposed to stop an incurable illness? By stunting it before it takes hold. Scientists have discovered a molecule that some virulent bacteria need in order to latch onto a host. They think they might be able to create a treatment that would render the molecule useless. Can we finally cross one doomsday scenario off our list of fears? More »

DARPA to hold one-day cyberwarfare workshop, attendance not mandatory

DARPA to hold oneday cyberwarfare workshop, attendance not mandatory

Oh, the fruits of the global village are many: connecting strangers with fetishes, fostering culture through memes and engendering cyber attacks via remote since the late 20th century. It’s the advanced decomposition of that latter rotten apple, however, that has DARPA — the government’s far-out research arm — taking a proactive stance and casting an agency-wide intelligence net to shore up on future defense protocol. To do this, the DoD offshoot’s holding a one-time workshop next month, dubbed Plan X Proposers’ Day, with the aim of bringing personnel together to brainstorm and implement infrastructure specifically centered around cyberwarfare analysis and research. One area the project, which just received $110 million in funding, will specifically avoid is the creation of actual cyberweapons. So, yeah, while this effort’s less Goldeneye and more of a strategic think tank initiative, it still warms the heart to know our nation’s best, brightest and most secretive are hard at work protecting our digital butts.

Amazon Kindle Fire reboot likely for West press event

There’s a brand new Amazon device headed for Santa Monica as the book dealer prepares for an event on the 6th of September. This event will be taking place at 10:30 AM PST and will have a special event center planned for it specifically. While we’re ready for a rebook of the Kindle Fire at this point, it is still possible that the this will be an introduction of new software or a connection to a new set of services as well.

Amazon has traditionally held conferences in New York City, this California location throwing many for a loop. It may be a sign that the book company is ready to change their face when it comes to appealing to a certain side of the country, but likely the choice was made simply because their venue of choice happened to be near Marina del Rey. It’s a nice sunny place, after all.

We’ll be at this press event with live in-action coverage for you all straight from the source. Join us at 10:30 AM on the 6th of September, California time, and see what they’ve got to bring to the table. Also remember that we’ve got two more events coming up, both of them on the 5th of September in both the morning and afternoon – Nokia and Motorola will be presenting new devices galore!

Remember to follow our Amazon tag for more information on the event as it nears, and stick around SlashGear for more up-to-the-minute updates as it pops off!

Reserve the Sharp AQUOS SH-10D on NTT DoCoMo from tomorrow, full launch next week

We knew the Sharp AQUOS SH-10D was due to hit NTT DoCoMo at some point this summer, and now we’ve got the full details. You can reserve yours through the carrier from tomorrow, and the proper launch will take place the following week on August 30th. The device will be available in the three colors you see above, and as it recently passed through the FCC, a trip to the US could also be in the cards. But unfortunately, that orange wallpaper is all too harsh a reminder of one that never ventured outside Japan.

Jury for Apple, Samsung case to deliberate longer today

Today marks the second day of deliberations for the Apple and Samsung patent trial, and the jury is ready to do some work. The group of nine who will be deciding the case told the court that they plan to extend deliberations by an extra hour today. This means that instead of the 9 AM to 4:30 PM schedule they followed yesterday, they won’t be leaving the courthouse until 5:30 PM.

Naturally, with the jury being extremely restricted in who they can and can’t talk to, it’s unlikely that we’ll find out what’s going on behind those closed doors. PCWorld reports that there are a number of reasons why they would want to stay later, with DOAR Litigation Consulting director Roy Futterman saying it’s likely that they realized the mountain of work that lies ahead of them and just want to dig in. He says it’s also possible – unlikely, but possible – that they’re trying to get everything done before the weekend arrives.

Ultimately, Futterman says this move by the jury shows him that they are ready to get to work on deciding who’s in the right. They’ve got a lot of work ahead of them too, as they’ve been listing to the back and forth between Apple and Samsung for the past three weeks. Judge Lucy Koh even asked Apple and Samsung to work together to narrow their claims, but those talks didn’t go anywhere.

So, the jury has to decide who wins the case by wading through everything that has been presented by both sides during the trial. That isn’t going to be easy, but it’s good to see that the jury is willing to do what it takes (and then some) nonetheless. After all, as important as this case is, no one wants a jury that will jump to a decision without first considering everything that Apple and Samsung have said throughout the case.

Papercraft Starry Night: Painting with Paper

I don’t remember exactly when I started obsessing about The Starry Night, but needless to say that this is one painting that I find unforgettable, especially when it comes to the swirling wind patterns in the sky. I guess I’m not the only one because one artist decided to recreate tan intricate version of the image using paper as her medium.

quilled starry night susan myers

Susan Myers uses quilling, a paper filigree art form that involves countless hours of folding and shaping in order to recreate Van Gogh’s Starry Night. She used a white colored pencil to draw a template. Then she quilled, cut, rolled and glued thousands of colorful card stock pieces to reimagine the famous painting. Her canvas measures 36″ × 24″.

The Starry Night has been recreated countless of times, but this is the first papercraft recreation I’ve ever seen. I like it. She recently sold the piece through her Etsy site.

These Batman Mimobot Flash Drives Are The USB-Drives-Gotham-Needs-Them-To-Be Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

USB is just the best thing ever. You can stick pretty much anything into those little drives and get something amazing. Whether lighting up my world, cooling down my face or even charging my iPhone, is there anything USB can’t do? These days it seems like the USB Flash Drive has actually sort of fallen behind. I mean, it’s a staple of any moderate computer user, but do we really care what it looks like? Some people just have terribly ugly ones. I have an old USB drive I’ve kept in my backpack for 5 years that still contains some pretty important files. Well, these themed Mimobot Flash Drives are not settling for anything less than adorable. You can customize them in any number of different characters, including the caped crusader. Get your favorite one now for 40% off. More »
