T-Mobile Concord hits 4G network for cheap

This week the folks at T-Mobile have announced a new smartphone for their 4G network with a low price and manufacturing done by none other than up-and-comer ZTE. This smartphone works with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, has a lovely 3.5-inch touchscreen display, and has a 2-megapixel camera on the back. The highlight of this little beast is the fact that it’ll be available on a variety of contracts through T-Mobile and various retail partners.

With this device you’ll be grabbing a T-Mobile single-line, Monthly4G no annual contract plan. This plan has unlimted talk, text, and data (without a cap) and access to T-Mobile’s 4G data network. You’re able to pair this device with Walmart’s Family Mobile service as well for monthly payments. This Walmart Family Mobile plan will bring on no-annual-contract phone service with data for individuals as well as families – again, all powered by T-Mobile’s network across the USA.

You’ll be able to pick up the T-Mobile Concord smartphone at Target as well at Walmart starting on August 26th. This device will be available for $99.99 with a qualifying Monthly4G plan at Target and for $99.98 paired with a Walmart Family Mobile no annual contract plan at – you guessed it – Walmart.

This device is the next in a line of ZTE products being brought to the United States by the manufacturer in their effort to enter this lively mobile market. ZTE is responsible for a collection of fabulous and strangely enticing devices internationally, most of them running Android, and we’re more than ready to welcome them to the USA with open arms. More manufacturers means more competition and better devices in the end – lets go!

Check the timeline below for more ZTE action and prepare yourself for more products created by them but branded with the carrier their on here in the USA.

Ice Screen 26-inch Android-powered Smart TV From Tencent and TCL

What do we have here? A new Smart TV player in the market from Tencent and TCL? You just got to love the name attached to this particular Smart TV, where both companies have agreed to call it the “Ice Screen”, if you get my drift. The Ice Screen is touted to be the first large screen mobile entertainment smart cloud product in the world, where it features 26″ of viewing goodness while carrying a quartet of core applications – namely, a “large portable screen”, a “high-speed video player”, a “stylish music and photo album” and “high-definition video communications”.

The irony of its name is not lost on us, as the Ice Screen runs off the Android operating system, where it is powered by a dual-core Cortex A9 1GHz processor accompanied by a Mali 400 GPU for its graphics processing needs, 4GB RAM, a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, Wi-Fi connectivity, a microSD memory card slot, USB and HDMI connectivity, and just to make sure you do not wake up the rest of the household late into the night, a 3.5mm headphone jack. The asking price? Roughly $315 after conversion, where you can always place an online pre-order prior to its September 3rd launch. Image courtesy of Engadget. [Press Release]

Facebook updates iOS app, says it’s ‘rebuilt from the ground up’ to be twice as fast

Facebook updates iOS app, says it's now twice as fast

There’s no visual overhaul as it just did yesterday with Facebook Messages, but Facebook has now announced an update for its iOS app that promises some fairly big improvements of its own. According to the company, the app was “rebuilt from the ground up,” and is now twice as fast as the previous version. That includes a faster opening of the app itself, smoother and faster scrolling, and photos that are said to load “instantly” — changes that are largely due to a switch from the old HTML5 code to iOS’ native programming language. Unfortunately, we’re not able to test those claims ourselves just yet, but Facebook says that the update (version 5.0) will be available later today.

Update: The app is now available to download from the App Store, and it does indeed appear to be quite a bit speedier.

MilkTape: $15 For 128MB USB Drive Disguised As A Cassette Tape

Screen shot 2012-08-23 at 1.10.25 PM

Johnny looked Amanda in the eye. They had only been dating for a couple of weeks, but in a summer romance, just before heading back to college, weeks seemed like forever. And yet, were still never enough.

He nervously patted down his own pockets, as if he had forgotten something, and then sighed with relief when he felt the cassette tape secure in the breast pocket of his flannel shirt.

Her iPhone buzzed. It was her mom, but she ignored the call and instead responded with a quick text. She handed him one of her earbuds and turned to the Music app before playing “Call Me Maybe,” bopping along to the beat.

It was the perfect moment, he thought, and placed the cassette tape in her hand, the same one he had been holding.

“Oh my god! Did you make me a mix tape?” she squealed. Her name was written on the tape, and a list of fifteen songs had been sloppily jotted down on the paper case cover that had come with it. “I don’t even know how I’m going to listen to this. Do you have a tape player?”

“You don’t need one.” Johnny smiled before taking the case from her hand and removing the tape. He hooked his fingernail on a little USB key, that swung out of the cassette tape on a hinge. “You have your laptop with you, right?”

“Just my dad’s PC,” she said. “My MacBook is at the Genius bar.”

“That’s ok. MilkTape works on both.”

She plugged it in, slightly bummed that it wasn’t a real mix tape, but she hid that from Johnny. On the bright side, she thought, he can give me way more songs with a USB than a cassette.

She opened the drive and scanned through a list of 15 songs, before becoming quickly disappointed. And it showed on her face.

“What’s wrong?” Johnny pleaded. “You don’t like the songs? I only put Gotye on there because I know you like the song, not because you’re somebody that I used to know.”

“Six megabytes remaining? Really?” She was furious. “How much did you pay for this? It’s a cute thought, but if you spent more than a couple bucks on this…”

“It was $15,” he said, head bowed.

“Did they come in a pack?”

He shook his head.

“I mean, you can get a 16 gigabyte flash drive for $10. I guess I just don’t know why you spent so much for 15 songs.”

Amanda closed the laptop.

“I could have gotten a 4GB flash drive for $5, and that would still hold a thousand songs,” he answered. “The point of limited storage is that I have to choose carefully. You know, like they did in the old days? With cassette tapes.”

“I guess that’s kind of cute,” she said, snuggling up to him once again. “But when I make you one I’m just going to put it on Spotify, ok?”

ZTE-made Concord arrives at T-Mobile and Walmart, caters to the starter crowd at $100 contract-free

ZTEmade Concord arrives at TMobile and Walmart, caters to the starter crowd at $100 contractfree

T-Mobile wants to offer as much of a lure to smartphone newcomers as to power users who might spring for its truly unlimited data, and the ZTE Concord might just be the right kind of bait. The truly 2010-vintage Android 2.3, 3.5-inch screen and 2-megapixel camera won’t get anyone’s pulse racing, but a $100 contract-free price is hard to ignore — even for the sort who’d otherwise be looking for a just-does-calls flip phone. Accordingly, the carrier plans to put the Concord in front of audiences that would rarely care to set foot in a dedicated cellphone store. Walmart is selling the phone today for those comfortable with a Walmart Family Mobile plan. If you’d rather show fealty to T-Mobile itself, you’ll have to swing through a Target store on or after August 26th.

Nuclear Watch: A Pre-Apocalyptic Time Telling Device

Most watches with glow-in-the dark parts achieve the effect using special paint that absorbs light and reflects it back for an extended period. But the faint glow from the Nuclear Watch comes from decaying radioactive hydrogen atoms. They died for you!

nuclear watch

According to its product page, each watch contains about 100 quadrillion radioactive hydrogen atoms, divided among the dials and hands of the watch. The atoms are stored in a glass tube that is lined with phosphorescent material. As the hydrogen atoms decay, the electrons they emit hit the lining. This causes the glow. The page also claims that about 250 million of the hydrogen atoms decay every second, but their sheer number means that the watch will keep glowing 24/7 for 25 years.

If you’re not creeped out at the thought of carrying an atomic genocide on your wrist, order the Nuclear Watch from Gadgets & Gear for $175 (USD).

iPhone 5 dock and display production cuts early supply

A report from China today suggests that suppliers behind the production of the new iPhone – or iPhone 5, if you prefer, are finding manufacturing numbers to be a bit lower than planned due to shortage of materials. This report comes from DigiTimes, a publication that has a mixed record for accuracy, but has produced early Asia-based supply news well in advance of official Apple sources in the past. Numbers of iPhone 5 shipments are said to be hitting below 15 million this season where Apple had requested that they be in excess of 20 million for the holiday months.

This first batch of iPhones will be limited in supply but will ramp up in the first several months of 2013, fully prepared for the inevitable rush of post-Christmas shoppers. Shipment numbers are said to be tied directly to the manufacturing of in-cell technology for integrated LCD and touchscreen hardware as detailed earlier today by LG. While the report by LG does not mention specifically that supplies are low (or will be low,) they do speak on how it has been difficult to get to the point they’re at now where production can move forward at full speed.

An in-cell technology patent was passed just weeks ago for Apple for their future devices, the iPhone and quite possibly future iPad models as well. Apple originally set the patent application in motion in 2007 before the manufacturing of said technology was possible, with manufacturers just catching up with the futuristic method for parts integration here in 2012.

Supply numbers come from Foxconn International Holdings (FIH) and also have been tied to low numbers of parts available for the production of a new mini dock connector at the bottom of the new iPhone. This mini dock connector is said – and has been shown – to have two identical sides with a total of 16 pins rather than the 30 of past iPod, iPad, and iPhone models. Have a peek at our iPhone 5 portal for more information on this future generation of Apple products, and hit the timeline below for key iPhone 5 points as well!
