Nissan embraces Microsoft Kinect for Windows to show off 2013 Pathfinder

For 2013, Nissan has completely redesigned the Pathfinder SUV. In previous years the Nissan Pathfinder was much boxier than most of the other offerings from Nissan, but for 2013 that will all change. The completely redesigned Pathfinder has a lot more curves and more closely resembles the Murano from Nissan than in previous years. The new SUV is set to hit dealer showrooms later this fall.

Nissan wants to get car shoppers excited about the new Pathfinder ahead of the actual vehicle being available for test drives and close inspection. The company has chosen 16 of its dealers across the nation and is piloting a new program called the Pathfinder Kinect Experience. Sixteen dealerships around the country will have a virtual 2013 Pathfinder SUV to explore using Microsoft Kinect for Windows technology.

Using the Kinect Natural User Interface car shoppers will be able to climb into a virtual Pathfinder and explore the vehicle using motion and natural human gestures. The virtual exploration system and each dealership will include a Kinect for Windows kiosk with a computer, TV, and Kinect hardware. The shopper will be able to explore the exterior of the vehicle, select colors, bend down to inspect wheels, view the front and back of the vehicle, and climb inside for a virtual experience inside the SUV.

The Pathfinder Kinect Experience will be available in select dealerships across 13 states from August 20 through the end of November. Nissan says that this program is paving the way for a broader virtual showroom allowing shoppers to explore new Nissan vehicles months before they’re available in dealerships. If the pilot program in the 16 dealerships around the country is successful, Nissan says that it could extend the Kinect virtual showroom to all 1100 dealerships around the country.

Motorola has no plans to add bootloader unlocking support for older devices

Not too long ago we reported that after promising their customers for so long, Motorola has finally rolled out an online bootloader unlocking tool on its website. As we noted at its time of launch, only a handful of handsets were supported, such as the recently launched Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE, the developer version of the RAZR and the Xoom tablets. Naturally we assumed that support for other Motorola devices, like the Droid Bionic, Droid 3, Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX and etc. would be added eventually, but in a recent tweet by Motorola, it looks like we are in for a disappointment.

In response to a question asked whether support would be added for older Motorola devices like the Droid 3, Bionic, DX2 and etc., Motorola responded by saying that it was not currently in the plan. There was no word on whether the RAZR or RAZR MAXX will be getting the same treatment, but unless it appears on the bootloader website, we’ll take it as a no for now. However this is by no means definite as plans do change, but as it stands, owners of older Motorola devices are simply out of luck.

Nikon D700 appears to be no longer available in the US

Bad news photographers, if you were looking for a new DSLR camera and after scanning multiple reviews and getting feedback from everyone, you have decided to settle for the Nikon N700, well it seems that the camera has officially been discontinued. Popular photography websites such as B&H, Samy’s, OneCall, Cameta and Abe’s have also listed the camera out of stock, although it seems that you might still be in luck if you poke around some camera stores who might still have a few units left in stock. Amazon has listed it from a third-party retailer, and it seems that J&R has some left in stock too. In any case with Photokina around the corner, there is a chance that new DSLR cameras will be unveiled so perhaps you could try your luck then. Until then, who else is bummed that the D700 has been discontinued? Or do you guys think that there is a better alternative out there?

Researchers launch year long trial program of smart cars that have the ability to “talk” to each other

Cars that drive themselves aren’t new, and with our phones getting smarter, we don’t see why our cars can’t get smarter either. Researchers at the University of Michigan have announced that they will be launching a year-long test program of what they are referring to as smart car technology. Basically the goal of this technology is to help reduce the number of accidents on the road involving unimpaired drivers by up to 80%! That’s certainly a lofty goal and we hope that they are able to achieve it. (more…)

Avoid Cable Craziness

Taking a USB cable for your phone is becoming a necessity. Whether needing to sync with a computer or needing a charge, inevitably you will need a cable. And then comes the fun of unraveling the cable. I’m continually dumbfounded by how a relatively well rolled charger can turn to a hornets nest with minimal motion. Imagine using speakerphone with your colleagues on your cell phone on an important conference – struggling with 1% charge – and you are stuck unraveling your cord to save it from shutting down. D’oh! Or even worse, you can’t find your cable. Double D’oh!

AViiQ™ designs stylish and practical mobile accessories like the iPad case we covered last year. To help with the USB cable craziness AViiQ offers the Ready Clip USB Mini Cable Kit. It is designed to be carried like a pen as it measures only 5.5”. So rest assured that untangling is not required. And like the name says, Ready Clip comes with a clip attached – making it really easy to stash in your shirt pocket or computer bag. Ready Clips are available in 3 connector types, all on Amazon: Apple 30-pin ($14.99), mini micro USB ($10.12) and USB ($8.49).

So whether you are an executive looking to streamline your mobile experience, a student trying to stay on top of your game or just a gadget lover, the Ready Clip provides an inexpensive investment to relieve the hassle of cables!

Pentax launches new X-5 super zoom digital camera

Pentax has announced the launch of a new camera with seriously high levels of zoom. The new digital camera is called the X-5, and the camera has enough zoom to get users up close to whatever their subject is. The camera offers a whopping 26x optical zoom covering a focal length of 22.3 mm to 580 mm in 35mm equivalent.

The camera has 16-megapixel resolution and supports ISO 6400. With 26x optical zoom, keeping blur out of your photos when using full zoom would be impossible without some sort of shake reduction technology. Pentax equipped the camera with a mechanical sensor-shift shake reduction mechanism and digital check reduction modes for still photos and movies.

When combined, the digital and mechanical hybrid shake reduction system promises clear photos at any zoom level. The camera can record full resolution HD video at 30 frames per second using h.264 format and has an integrated micro-HDMI output for sending recorded movies to a big-screen. The camera has an electronic viewfinder with diopter adjustment.

The camera has a number of automatic modes with 16 shooting options and an auto macro function for shooting very close to the subject. The camera is powered by standard AA batteries that can be found just about anywhere. The camera is also capable of shooting bursts at up to 10 shots per second for a maximum of 30 images in a sequence. A number of creative image processing tools and 12 digital filters are integrated. The camera will be available starting in September at an MSRP of $279.95.

Nokia Phi Windows Phone 8 specs “confirmed” by Eldar Murtazin

A week ago we reported that alleged photos of Nokia’s upcoming Windows Phone 8 handset, Phi, were leaked. While it remains to be seen as to whether those photos are indeed legitimate, famed Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin who seems to have the privilege of getting his hands on Nokia devices before anyone else, has spoken with Russian website Obozrevatel and basically “confirmed” the Nokia Phi’s specs. We say “confirm” because even though Murtazin has a reputation for getting it right, there’s always the off-chance that Nokia could surprise us.

In any case for those curious, the Nokia Phi is expected to sport a massive 4.7” display, a microSD card slot and is reportedly thinner than both the Lumia 800 and Lumia 900. He also stated that despite the battery of the Phi being larger than the Lumia 800 and 900, oddly enough it did not last as long. There is a good chance that might have something to do with software as we’re sure Nokia and Microsoft are currently tweaking Windows Phone 8 as best as they can before its release. Murtazin also expects the Phi to be priced in Russia for $935 and that we will see it officially announced on the 5th of September.

This CT-S electric scooter is sleek and will charge in the trunk of your car

If you’re too lazy to walk, or perhaps want to get around in style, this concept CT-S electric scooter might be of interest to you. Designed by Goldberg Boris, the CT-S electric scooter was apparently inspired by Lexus’s innovative L-FINESSE, sporting pretty sleek curves and a very minimalist and clean design. According to its designer, the device will be made from aerospace lightweight carbon fiber and will be powered by lithium ion batteries. Since it is merely a concept, we have no idea how long the scooter will be able to run for before requiring a recharge, but its designer has stated that the batteries will be “long lasting.” As far as charging goes, it can be charged by placing it in the trunk of your vehicle using a standard 12v socket, and has been designed to be used as the “last mile journey to the office.” Talk about convenient, you may very well be the envy of your colleagues! So, who wouldn’t mind seeing this CT-S electric scooter become a reality?

This iPhone 5 conversion kit will give your iPhone 4/4S a makeover

Assuming the leaked images are to be believed, we can expect the next-gen iPhone to sport a two-toned back plate, with the top and bottom portions in black/white, while the middle portion will be off a slightly lighter color. While the design of Apple’s new iPhone has yet to be confirmed, iPhone 4/4S owners will be able to turn their device into lookalikes thanks to this iPhone 5 conversion mod kit. It will not give you the rumored 3.95”/4” display, but the back does resemble the leaked images we’ve seen so far. It will set you back $30 and according to the seller, the materials used for the camera lens is apparently the same as the original iPhone back plate and uses “glass-like acrylic” and aluminum. You will be able to pick one up for yourself here, but if you’d like to see a video of the conversion kit in action, check it out in the video above.
