I Keep My Phone on Silent to Protect My Own Sanity [Chatroom]

At some point last year (or maybe two years ago?), I decided to abandon ringtones and alerts of all sorts, in favor of the mild buzz of a vibration. I don’t want to hear text messages or even phone calls come in—ever. I don’t want to constantly have my ear pricked for some sort of contact from the outside world. More »

LG Display starts volume production of in-cell touch screens, we have a hunch as to who wants them

LG Display 1080p 5-inch panel

Looks like we’ll be finding in-cell touch displays in our devices sooner rather than later: LG Display has confirmed that it’s been mass-producing the thinner LCDs since earlier in August. CEO Han Sang-beom also notes that manufacturing has been going as smooth as, well, glass. Despite the complexity of building touch input directly into a display, the company expects to keep the supply going “without any fail,” according to the executive. As to who’s making the orders? LG Display isn’t naming its customers on the record, and production could be as much for its sister company’s phones and tablets as anyone else’s. It’s hard not to pinpoint Apple as the 800-pound gorilla in the room, however. Apart from Apple representing one of LG Display’s biggest existing customers, multiple rumors and component leaks point to an iPhone with an in-cell display being in the works. The timing raises a distinct possibility that we’ll know more about the screen manufacturer’s clients in less than a month.

Curiosity’s first Mars track marks

Just like a doting parent, the folks over at NASA are fawning over the Curiosity Rover’s every single movement on the Red Planet after landing there earlier this month. Sure, we have seen its first panoramic photo, in addition to a high definition video of its rather pinpoint and accurate landing, so what other “firsts” are there to explore with the Curiosity? Here we are with a 360-degree panorama shot that shows off evidence of a successful first test drive, where Curiosity went forward for approximately 15 feet, rotating 120 degrees followed by reversing for around 8 feet, placing it about 20 feet from its landing site (which has since been named Bradbury Landing). So far, no Decepticons were detected just yet, so Curiosity is free to continue roaming without stumbling into any other intelligent lifeform.

What you see above would include the rover’s first track marks, in addition to a rather tiny 3.5″ rock which could be spotted where the drive began, and engineers claimed it to be partially under one of the rear wheels. The wonders of interstellar travel, and hopefully this space tourist from Earth will be able to capture many more stunning images in the days and months to come.

Microsoft Kinect gets price drop to $109.99

You know what they say – good things always come to those who wait, but then again, there is always a price to pay if you are an early adopter. Case in point, the Microsoft Kinect system that was introduced to the world on November 4, 2010 for $149.99 a pop. This motion-sensing peripheral has finally received an official price drop to $109.99 from today onwards, and retailers like Amazon are quick on the uptake, having slashed and adjusted their online pricing almost immediately.

For $109.99, what will you get? Of course, there is the Microsoft Kinect peripheral itself, in addition to a copy of Kinect Adventures, which comprises of a collection of minigames which were specially developed to parade the many different aspects of Kinect’s capabilities. Right now, a dozen Kinect-compatible games can be purchased on Xbox Live Arcade uf you need to know. Folks who want to hack the Kinect system can also give it a go if you are interested, after all, the entry price point has just opened the door a little bit wider for those on a tight budget.

Verizon Droid Incredible 2 Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich ROM leaked

Just like the HTC Thunderbolt which we talked about earlier this morning concerning an unofficial Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich ROM leak, here we are with a leaked ROM of Ice Cream Sandwich for the Droid Incredible 2 from Verizon Wireless, where HTC Sense 3.6 will also be thrown into the mix. Installing this leaked ROM will see your Android version bumped up to 4.0.4, although there are no promises that nothing will go awry with your smartphone. I suppose you do know the potential dangers of installing an unverified ROM on your smartphone – it might just end up bricking it.

Needless to say, it makes perfect and good sense to perform a backup of your Droid Incredible 2 beforehand, just in case Murphy decides to strike and wipe out all data on your device. There is a chance of installing the leaked ICS ROM without the need for a firmware update, although there are no guarantees that you can boot it up or get the other stuff working perfectly fine.
