Avril Lavigne Engaged To Chad Kroeger

Avril Lavigne is engaged to Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, according to People.com.

The pair, who have been quietly dating for six months, got together while working on Lavigne’s latest album. The twosome became engaged on Aug. 8, when Kroeger, 37, presented the 27-year-old singer with a 14-carat diamond ring.

Lavigne, whose marriage to Sum 41 frontman, Deryck Whibley, ended in 2009, was recently rumored to be dating Marilyn Manson (who quickly quashed those stories) and also dated Kardashian step-brother Brody Jenner. After being a very public couple for nearly two years, and getting some tattoos to pledge their love to one another, they split in early 2012, not long before Lavigne and Kroeger started working together.

Porn Shutdown: Syphilis Cases Spark Self-Imposed Moratorium On Production

By Alex Dobuzinskis

LOS ANGELES, Aug 21 (Reuters) – A porn industry trade group has announced a U.S. moratorium on production of adult sex films after several reported cases of syphilis among adult film actors, adding to the pressure on porn producers to require the use of condoms on sets.

The actors can return to work in 10 days after taking antibiotics, and doctors have recommended treating all adult film actors as a precaution, the Los Angeles-based Free Speech Coalition said in a statement on its website late on Monday.

It added that filming had been halted since the weekend.

“Clearly our industry’s priority is the health and well-being of our performers,” Diane Duke, the executive director of the Free Speech Coalition, said in the statement.

Porn producers in the Los Angeles area — the heart of the U.S. adult film industry and home to an estimated 1,000 performers — are under pressure to ensure condom use on sets to prevent the spread of the AIDS virus and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Existing California workplace laws already mandate the use of condoms by porn performers, but critics say that statute is not specifically aimed at the industry and is widely flouted.

A Los Angeles ballot initiative in November will ask voters to force the county health department to require condom use by adult film performers.

Dr. Jonathan Fielding, the director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, said his agency was investigating less than a dozen reported cases of syphilis involving the adult film industry.

All the cases so far involved adult film performers or their partners, Fielding said.

“It’s not surprising that there would be a lot of cases in the adult film industry, since they are having a lot of unprotected sex and often with multiple partners,” he said.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which has led a campaign to involve local officials in regulating the use of condoms in the adult film industry, was critical of the porn industry decision to have all its performers receive antibiotic treatment, rather than take the time to trace the outbreak.

“They just want to throw an antibiotic blanket over the whole thing,” AIDS Healthcare President Michael Weinstein said.

His nonprofit succeeded in January in persuading Los Angeles city officials to adopt a condom requirement for porn performers. The city is still determining how to enforce the policy, but it will not cover studio sound stages.

BALLOT INITIATIVE

A ballot initiative due in November that AIDS Healthcare supports would go further and require county health officials to impose requirements for condoms on porn sets that would apply to shoots in studio sound stages.

The Free Speech Coalition said the syphilis test that porn industry doctors were administering could not diagnose a recent infection because the test has a 90-day window.

Joanne Cachapero, a spokeswoman for the Free Speech Coalition, said her group “would rather err on the side of caution” and ensure “as many performers as possible receive testing and treatment.” (Reporting by Alex Dobuzinskis; Editing by Cynthia Johnston and Cynthia Osterman)

This iPad Typewriter Is Loud and Banging Fun [Video]

As keyboards eventually move towards dead silent and touch screen, you’ll rue the loss of clickity, clackity keyboards filled with character. Hell, we’re already without the beautiful racket of typewriters. Click, tap, tap, reset. It’s the sound of work and art at the same time. So combining a typewriter with an iPad? That’s a sound I love to hear. [YouTube via Kottke] More »

Mitt Romney Is Capturing Zero Percent Of The Black Vote, According To New Poll

Take a guess as to what percentage of black voters Mitt Romney is winning this election. Now take whatever number you’ve got in your head and go lower.

According to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, President Obama is beating his Republican opponent among black voters by a whopping 94 percent to 0 percent. The numbers are pretty brutal for Romney among Latinos, as well: he’s losing to the president almost 2 to 1. The poll has President Obama ahead among all registered voters, 48 percent to Romney’s 44 percent.

The numbers aren’t a complete surprise. The Republican party has fared poorly with black voters for decades. But there was a moment in the mid-aughts when the GOP was starting to see hints of progress. Both Bob Dole and George W. Bush actively courted conservative black voters and even managed to eek into double digits. (Not a small accomplishment, considering Democrats regularly won 90-plus percent of black voters in national contests for decades.) In 2005, Ken Mehlman, who was then running the Republican National Committee, even apologized to black leaders for the party’s use of racially divisive tactics, in a gesture that suggested that Republicans were making a serious play to slice off bits of the black electorate.

Odette Estate, Gavin Newsom’s New Winery, Opens In Napa (PHOTOS)

It’s official: Gavin Newsom does not like to sit still.

As though being Lieutenant Governor, raising a family and hosting a television show isn’t enough, San Francisco’s favorite expat has now opened a new winery, Odette Estate.

Located in Napa’s Stags Leap District, the winery’s name is a tongue-in-cheek nod to Odette Kahn, the judge at the infamous 1976 Judgment of Paris who demanded her ballot back after unknowingly voting in favor of Chateau Montelena. And with owners including Newsom, Gordon Getty and PlumpJack Winery General Manager John Conover, the winery has some serious backing.

Would You Buy a Plasma TV or a LCD TV? [Chatroom]

I know, I know. We all want to enjoy a gorgeous OLED TV or eat 4K visual deliciousness in our living room but those sets are ridiculously expensive and going to be pretty unrealistic for a long while. The best TV at the moment is the Panasonic VT50, a plasma screen, but we all know people’s eyeballs have their own preferences. More »

Curiosity rover flaunts its battle scar, wind sensor is bruised (but not broken)

Curiosity rover flaunts its battle scar, wind sensor is bruised but not broken

You can’t win ’em all. Such is the case with the Curiosity rover, anyway, as diagnostics have revealed that its wind sensors have sustained damage. NASA engineers aren’t fully sure what caused this minor setback to the otherwise successful landing, but hypothesize that stones might’ve been kicked up during the rocket-powered landing, which then struck the sensor’s wiring. Fortunately, there’s already someone on the job, as Javier Gomez-Elvira is investigating the damage with the intent of restoring the lost functionality. Another NASA scientist, Ashwin Vasavada, believes the issue is rather minor: “It degrades our ability to detect wind speed and direction when the wind is blowing from a particular direction, but we think we can work around that.”

The broken instrument was initially discovered as part of NASA’s routine power-cycling of all instrumentation, so as to determine an overall bill of health for the rover. Now that Curiosity has earned its battle scars, it can hold its head high during its journey to Glenelg and Mount Sharp.
