Milton Hall Shooting: Saginaw Residents Seek Answers

DETROIT — Police in Michigan repeatedly shot a mentally ill man in a parking lot as traffic passed in broad daylight. Weeks later, his family and others in Saginaw are still waiting for an explanation of why officers chose to use deadly force.

They have become angrier since the release of video that shows Milton Hall collapsing in a hail of gunfire on July 1. The video, taken on a witness’s cellphone the day of the shooting and later obtained and aired by CNN, shows police confronting Hall in a parking lot of a shopping center and ordering him to drop a knife. It’s not clear if he followed the order.

Nintendo Power magazine final issue tipped

In what must be the saddest news in the gaming industry all week, a source familiar with the matter has tipped the magazine Nintendo Power to be coming up on its final issue ever. This magazine has been said to be ceasing publication to the tip line at Ars Technica where they’ve also summoned Nintendo Power Senior Editor Chris Hoffman to Tweet several confirmations of the event. These tweets have since been deleted, but perhaps too late – now we’ve only to wait for the group behind the ink and paper magazine to confirm.

The group responsible for publishing Nintendo Power is and has been a group by the name of Future Publishing since 2007. Before Future Publishing, the Nintendo brand itself was behind the creation of the magazine, the original concept springing from the Nintendo Fun Club newsletter in the year 1988. This magazine has been in continuous publication since that year, and is (and perhaps soon will be was) one of the longest lasting gaming magazines in the history of the United States.

It appears that at this point it’s a matter of Future Publishing and Nintendo being unable to reach a consensus on how their contract will continue. Future Publishing is currently being said to be pushing “a number of digital initiatives” while Nintendo has been “difficult to work with” in this and related matters. Nintendo also currently does not appear to be interested in taking over control of the magazine.

The same source has tipped that Nintendo Power editors and staffers working for Future Publishing have been told of the failure to reach an agreement with Nintendo and are currently being moved to related properties. These related properties include magazines such as GamesRadar and MacLife.

We’ll miss Nintendo Power if it does indeed end up being shut down – but some good news is that Senior Editor Chris Hoffman’s tweets today did include one which promised that the editorial team would “try to make the last issues memorable”. In addition, Nintendo Power writer Phil Theobald tweeted that the team had “something pretty sweet planned for the final issue.” Each of the tweets in question have at the time of this post’s publication been deleted – take it all with a grain of salt!

Apple resellers reportedly making display room for new iPad

Hot on the heels of a rumor that has Verizon restricting September vacation time in anticipation of a new Apple launch, we have yet another rumor relating to the expected reveal. According to sources speaking to MacRumors, Apple resellers in Europe are being asked to increase the display space devoted to the iPad in their stores. If that doesn’t shout “incoming iPad announcement” to you, then maybe this might: at least one of the sources MacRumors spoke to claims that Apple has given resellers a deadline of September 12 to increase their iPad display space.

September 12, as many of you already know, is the date that Apple is expected to hold an event and announce the new iPhone. Though the new iPhone has taken a considerable amount of the attention for itself, some are also thinking that Apple will reveal an “iPad Mini” during this event. We’ve seen quite a few leaks reportedly showing parts of this new iPad Mini, but so far, Apple has kept its lips shut about such a device.

One of the sources claims that Apple has asked for resellers to triple the amount of space reserved for iPad displays, while others say Mac Pro and Mac Mini displays are the first on the chopping block in order to accommodate this shift. Since originally printing the rumor, MacRumors has updated saying that this shift in display space has come from the fact that Apple resellers have devoted only a small amount of space to the iPad when it’s one of Apple’s biggest sellers.

That update might have just solved the mystery, but that quoted September 12 deadline is still pretty suspicious. It seems that Apple may be expecting a rush for the iPad after September 12 is in the books, but the question is why? It sounds like we’re going to have wait until at least September 12 to find out. Stay tuned.

Hey Amazon, What Are You Doing With The ‘Firedock’ Trademark?

firedock

For most geeks, uttering the word “Firedock” conjures up images of this Kindle Fire-friendly speaker dock that was announced back in March.

But something interesting happened last month — Grace Digital released that very same Kindle Fire speaker dock under a different name on July 17. That by itself isn’t much to write home about, but The Digital Reader points out that Amazon now owns the FireDock trademark. A little digging reveals that Grace Digital transferred the trademark to Amazon Technologies (an Amazon.com subsidiary based in Nevada) just a few days earlier, on July 11.

So what gives? What is the Firedock? Looking at the goods and services that the trademark encompasses doesn’t provide too many concrete hints just because there are so damned many of them, but they do seem to point to an actual, physical product rather than a service. Still, it seems unlikely that Amazon would take control of the Firedock trademark just to push out something like a run-of-the-mill speaker dock (sorry Grace Digital, I’m sure your Matchstick is a real sweetheart).

Given some of the rumors about swirling around the new Kindle Fire (which may or may not have just passed through the FCC) and the stiff competition in the low-end tablet space, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the Firedock turned out to be an accessory to bolster Amazon’s play for the living room. You pop the new Kindle Fire into a Firedock (naturally), run it into a television and maybe a sound system, and voila — you’ve got a tablet that doubles as a video and music hub.

Hear me out on this one. It’s no secret that the low-cost Kindle Fire is something of a Trojan horse for all of Amazon’s media services — that’s music, television shows, and movies in addition to just books. Users get a free month of Amazon Prime and its related video service when you buy a Kindle Fire (a promotion that I doubt is going anywhere), and Amazon still hopes that the trial is enough to entice people into ponying up the annual fee. What’s more, recent rumors have pegged the forthcoming Kindle Fire 2 with an HDMI-out port, which would finally allow Kindle users to display all that content on a bigger screen.

Sure, there’s no shortage of televisions and discrete video boxes that could deliver Amazon’s Prime content to a television — there’s the Boxee, Roku’s line of cute black boxes, etc. — but that requires a commitment to the concept of streaming video. Not everyone is going to have that particular impulse, but for new Kindle Fire owners (who, don’t forget, have access to plenty of free premium content for a while), the ability to pick up an accessory that extends the use of a gadget they already want doesn’t seem like much of a leap. Once those components are in place and the setup’s value is seen, it may become even more difficult not to pay the $79 for continued Prime service. That’s what Amazon is really after.

Beyond the revenues generated from new Prime subscriptions, a move like that could help poke at Amazon’s search-focused rival. Google’s own low-cost tablet may well exceed the company’s sales expectations, but their living room-oriented media streamer wasn’t quite ready for prime time. Still, the company is clearly making what plays it can, and Amazon may be able to throw a wrench into things. If we take the new Kindle Fire to be Amazon’s Trojan horse, and the living room to be Troy, then the Firedock may well be the guy who knocked on the gates.

Travis Wall Talks ‘All The Right Moves,’ ‘So You Think You Can Dance,’ Emmys And More

So You Think You Can Dance” Season 2 runner-up Travis Wall has choreographed for the Oscars, is a two-time Emmy nominee and now he’s the star of his own reality show on Oxygen, “All the Right Moves.” Oh, and he’s only 24.

Travis went from being a contestant to a choreographer on “SYTYCD” before starting his own dance company, Shaping Sound — which is the subject of “All the Right Moves” — with fellow “SYTYCD” alum (and Season 1 winner) Nick Lazzarini, as well as Teddy Forance and Kyle Robinson. The four friends and roommates “work together, have their lives taped … and start getting real” on the new series, which premiered on July 31.

“All the Right Moves” returns this week (Tues., Aug. 21, 10 p.m. ET on Oxygen) with its second episode, which will continue to follow Travis, Nick, Teddy, Kyle and the rest of the dancers in the fledgling Shaping Sound company (including “SYTYCD” alums like Season 8 winner Melanie Moore, Season 6’s Channing Cooke, Season 9’s Alexa Anderson and Season 2’s Allison Holker) as they try to make a name for themselves.

Sony’s Ice Cream Sandwich rollout now in final stages for 2011 Xperia devices

Sony's 2011 Xperia Ice Cream Sandwich rollout now in final stages

You have to hand it to Sony, the company’s more than made good on its Android 4.0 upgrade promise (save for that Play hiccup). After rolling out Ice Cream Sandwich to its NXT mid-ranger just a few days ago, it’s now ready to dole out the software goods to the majority of the 2011 Xperia lineup beginning this week. That’s only the first round though, as a trio of leftover devices — the mini pro, neo L and Live with Walkman — will be privy to this OS boost in the “next few weeks.” With this latest feel-good news reassuring brand loyalists and official word of the Xperia S’ entrance into AOSP, it sure seems like prime time to hitch your ride to the company’s Google-powered mobile wagon. After all, Jelly Bean’s bound to spill over at some point.

2012 Chefs Of The Year: Los Angeles Magazine Reveals Their List Of Who Stands Out (EXCLUSIVE, PHOTOS)

We love many things about Los Angeles Magazine, but one of the things they do best is, well, their Best Of lists. They cover everything delicious from best new restaurants to best new bars. And now, they charm us with a new category: their first-ever Chefs of The Year issue, on newsstands this week.

Luckily, HuffPost LA got a sneak peak at the 20-chef list and we just couldn’t keep it all to ourselves.

But what’s important to note about this list is that it’s not about the best new chefs in LA. It’s also not about the best chefs of all time. No. These are the chefs of the year — the chefs that stood out the most in the last 12 months — and that includes rising stars and veterans alike. For example, Roy Choi (of Kogi fame) is their cover boy and Wolfgang Puck isn’t even on the list.

‘Homeland’ Season 2: New Preview Highlights Carrie’s Intense Mission (VIDEO)

The end of “Homeland” Season 1 saw Claire Danes‘ troubled heroine, Carrie Mathison, submitting to electroconvulsive therapy to try and cure her bipolar disorder — and in the process, apparently forgetting a crucial piece of information that might have proven Nicolas Brody’s (Damian Lewis) ties to terrorist Abu Nazir. Oops.

Apparently, Carrie’s ordeal won’t be slowing her down much when Season 2 premieres on Sept. 30. According to a newly released teaser, Carrie and her mentor Saul (Mandy Patinkin) will be back in the thick of things — despite Carrie having been fired from the CIA at the end of last season. The promo also highlights Danes’ intense and emotionally fraught performance, which won her a Golden Globe and saw her nominated for an Emmy this year.
