New Nexus device specs leaked via Samsung spreadsheet

It appears that there’s a brand new Google Nexus smartphone headed out via Samsung with slightly upgraded specifications over the next-newest device, the Galaxy Nexus. This next-generation Nexus device has been tipped by SamMobile where they’ve got the Galaxy Nexus to the left of the device and the Galaxy S III to the right. Unfortunately we don’t have any actual hardware to confirm the reality of this smartphone, but the specifications certainly seem to be possible.

The current line of Nexus devices includes the Google Nexus 7, a tablet, and the Galaxy Nexus, a smartphone manufactured by Samsung. The device we’re seeing here is code-named Nexus and has specifications that improve upon what the Galaxy Nexus has in several areas. The first place – and perhaps the most suspicious – is in the screen, incorrectly stating that the Galaxy Nexus has “Super AMOLED” display when in fact it has an “HD Super AMOLED” display. This display is compared to this new Nexus which is then said to have a “Super AMOLED HD” display, this set of words written in the wrong order.

HD Super AMOLED is defined by Samsung (and branded by Samsung) as resolution with Super AMOLED that’s above 1280 x 720 pixels. With such a resolution across the same size display, we’re looking at essentially the same setup as the Galaxy Nexus up front. The processor under the hood of this next device is said to be 1.5 GHz dual-core A9, this being a bit of an upgrade from the Galaxy Nexus (which uses Texas Instruments OMAP line) and the Galaxy S III (which here refers to the USA version of the device with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4).

This device is also set to take on the Galaxy S III’s cameras, both front and back, and will be coming in one iteration – 16GB internal storage. This smartphone will have a microSD card slot as well for memory expansion. Sound alright to you? If this device is indeed released by Samsung, it’ll be as a Galaxy Nexus Plus, or some sort of half-step upgrade such as that. This sort of situation has never before occurred with the Nexus line of devices, but it might be starting soon!

LG Motion 4G for MetroPCS handson video

The recent unveiling of that LTE-loaded Galaxy S Lightray doesn’t appear to have slowed down MetroPCS, as the Texas-born carrier’s quickly following up with yet another 4G handset to bring to its growing smartphone portfolio. Enter the economical 3.5-incher LG Motion 4G. Unlike the aforementioned offering from Samsung, however, the wallet-friendly network’s now betting high on selling this new handset on the cheap and, naturally, is flaunting the “4G LTE For All” unlimited access as one of the device’s biggest traits. But how exactly does it stack up in the real world? Well, the good news is we were amongst a select group of folks gathered at Manhattan’s Andaz, and were lucky enough to take it for a quick spin. So head on past the break to get a better feel for our first, early-on impressions of MetroPCS’ newest Android slab.

Rapid Equipping Force gets Mobile 3D Printers to produce equipment on-the-go

If you are part of the Rapid Equipping Force in the US Army, then you will be pleased to hear that this rapid prototyping wing has just been deployed to Afghanistan, scientists, 3D printers and all. This particular wing’s duty is pretty unique, remaining far away from the battlefield action and yet providing no less support as they are capable of churning out customized pieces of equipment required on the battlefield thanks to the wonders of 3D printing, save in mobile form these days. Talk about significantly cutting down the amount of time required in order to produce wanted equipment, not to mention virtually removing shipping times from afar!

The printer used is capable of churning out plastic parts while a CNC system, a Haas OM-2 in this case, is able to create parts out of steel and aluminum. The thing is, you always get what you pay for, and in the name of speed and convenience, each of these mobile 3D printing labs will cost approximately $2.8 million which includes 3D printing devices, a full stock of relatively traditional tools such as saws and welders, and a pair of engineers in each lab. Hand me a 3D printed assault rifle there mate, I seem to have misplaced mine in the last Taliban skirmish.

Watch Mars Curiosity Wiggle Its Wheels in the Gravel [Space]

This futuristic black and white image was taken today by one of the navigation cameras on NASA’s Curiosity rover. Engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab are wiggling front left wheel in the Mars gravel as vehicle gets ready to start out on its first drive soon. The dots on the wheel stand for JPL, because NASA won’t let the lab attach its logo. And though the pic is low res, it’s inspiringly beautiful. Who knew Ansel Adams was on board? Samsung investing billions in mobile chip plant

Samsung has announced that it will be spending $3-$4 billion on upgrading one of its chip manufacturing plants in Austin, Texas. The Austin Statesman reports that Samsung will be upgrading “roughly half” of its plant in order to make higher quality chips for mobile phones and tablets, and that this process is expected to take around a year. That section of the plant was shut down last month, and when it opens back up in 2013, Samsung will have a variety of new equipment at its disposal.

This plant in particular is widely assumed to build processors for Apple devices, so even though Samsung and Apple are currently locked in a courtroom tussle, this move by Samsung is one that Apple will eventually benefit from too. The process of removing the old equipment and replacing it is expected to take around six months, with employees going through training before that section of the plant becomes operational sometime in the latter half of next year.

Some more good news: Samsung won’t be laying off any employees while this section of the plant is shut down. The last time Samsung upgraded one of its plants, it laid off workers during the construction process. That won’t happen this time around, as Samsung will be putting those employees through training while the new equipment is installed. Samsung says this won’t add a large number of permanent jobs at the company, but it will put around 2,000 people to work temporarily as the current equipment is upgraded.

When everything is said and done, the entire facility will be producing SoC chipsets for mobile devices and tablets. The old equipment is being removed from the facility ask you read this, with installation of the new equipment scheduled to begin sometime in September. Be sure to have a look at our story timeline below for more news on Samsung’s recent happenings!

The Worst Job at Google: A Year of Watching Beastiality, Child Pornography, and Other Terrible Internet Things [Google]

People put terrible things on the internet. Very terrible things. And it’s someone’s job to make sure that regular people don’t run into them. But that is a terrifying job, and it understandably scars a lot of people who do it. Buzzfeed talked to one former employee who told the story. More »

Purported Specs Of The Next Nexus Smartphone Hits The Web

Galaxy-Nexus

Forget about the new iPhone. It’s almost time for the next Nexus superphone!

The Galaxy Nexus one was introduced last November so it only makes sense that the next one will launch around the same time period. Codenamed Superior, specs for the next Galaxy Nexus just appeared but don’t get too excited. This next phone, if it really is a Nexus variation, isn’t all that more impressive than the current generation.

As shown by a chart posted by SamMobile, the GT-I9260 reportedly has a 1.5GHz dual-core A9 at the core. It uses the same 4.65-inch Super AMOLED HD screen as the current Galaxy Nexus. The biggest change comes in the form the 8MP/1.9MP cameras. This is a large upgrade from the GT-I9250′s 5MP, 1.3MP front and back cameras. This next model also reportedly sports a microSD card slot.

Pricing and release date wasn’t given, but it’s likely that the next Nexus phone will launch in the coming months — probably shortly after the new iPhone’s buzz dies off but still a before the holiday’s kick into high gear.

O2PAK offers portable oxygen on the battlefield

Now here is something that the military will find interesting – the O2PAK, a tiny, non-pressurized emergency chemical oxygen generator that hails from Combat Critical Care Corp. which was specially designed for military, ESAR/CSAR and humanitarian operations. Basically, the O2PAK will tip the scales at approximately three pounds while fitting in a pack without batting and eyelid. There is no need to maintain it, and neither do you need to mix or fill it up later, although if it has not been used for the better part of 4 years, you would do well to discard it away considering that is the length of its shelf life.

Even better news is the lack of need for any maintenance whatsoever for this one-time use military pack. The O2PAK will be able to produce solid-state chemical oxygen, doing away with potential associated risks of explosion, and needs no electricity while going at it. Touted to produce oxygen for 22 minutes at the very minimum, and it is even operable at up to 40,000′ altitude. Fret not about it spontaneously combusting like a Fisker Karma, as it has been subjected to a battery of medical, ballistic, blast and fire tests, passing them with flying colors.
