Skype updated for iOS with photo sharing and performance boosts

This morning those of you working with the iOS version of Skype for either your iPad or iPhone will be glad to find an update waiting in your App Store inbox, so to speak. There you’ll be seeing a version that brings on one of the most frequently requested features for the app of all time, Photo Sharing. Performance upgrades have also been added to the app as Skype notes that “many of you want to keep Skype running on your mobile devices all the time.”

With the photo sharing upgrade you’ll be able to bring on photos you’ve either just shot or have on your Photo Roll from the past. There’s no limit on the side of the photo file you send, believe it or not, so no worries on taking a giant beast of a shot and knocking it down to size before sending. Skype notes that you’ll be able to send photos “without reaching email size limits or paying expensive MMS charges.” Of course you’ll still be paying for the data you use via your data plan if you’re not on Wi-fi, as always.

Performance upgrades comes in the form of battery drain here with both versions of the Skype app for iOS. You’ll be able to run Skype in the background as you have been able to for some time, and you’ll be able to answer calls throughout the day as they appear, now with battery drain that’s less severe than in the past. Skype also notes that the app will load your contact lists faster than ever before as well.

This version of Skype will work for most versions of Apple mobile device hardware including any version of the iPad, iPhone 3G/3GS and iPhone 4/4S, 2nd and 3rd Generation iPod touch. You can grab the update for any device using iOS 4.3 or later straight from the iTunes app store right this minute!

Robot Hall of Fame voting begins for class of 2012, Johnny 5 learns where BigDogs sit

Robot Hall of Fame voting begins for class of 2012, Johnny 5 learns where BigDogs sitIt’s that time again: time for Carnegie Mellon to roll out the red carpet and welcome the crème de la crème of the robotics world into its halls. Since 2003 the school has been selecting the best of the best and inducting them into the Robot Hall of Fame. Past honorees have included everything from LEGO Mindstorms to the Terminator. This year’s list of nominees is no less impressive, with celebrity bots Johnny 5 and WALL-E pitted against each other in the entertainment category, while NASA’s Robonaut takes on the PR2 and BigDog under the banner of research bots. There will also be two other inductees awarded a spot in the hall in the consumer and education category and the industrial and service field. Best of all, for the first time ever, Carnegie Mellon is letting the public vote on the inductees. And, while PETMAN was snubbed yet again, he’s not letting that get him down — the Boston Dymanic’s biped just keeps on struttin’. Hit up the source link to cast your vote before the September 30th deadline and check back on October 23rd to see who’s granted a podium speech.

Weerol is the Toy that Grows with Your Child

Raising kids these days is expensive. Aside from the basics, like food and clothing, there’s also the “extra” expenses like toys. Based on what you’ve probably heard from you friends, kids outgrow toys almost as fast as they outgrow their clothes. So how about a ‘toy’ of sorts that grows with your child? Something like the Weerol.

Weerol0The Weerol is a modern, re-configurable, customizable, natural, active toy platform that you can disassemble and put back together into something your child would need (or be able to use), according to his or her age.

Weerol1

Constructed from renewable birch laminate and BPA free thermoplastic rubber treads, the Weerol has been designed to convert easily between different configurations while still remaining safe and sturdy.

New Frankenstein Virus Can Build Itself on Any Computer From Stolen Snippets of Code [Viruses]

What if a virus were a shapeshifter, able to change its appearance each time it infects a machine? What if a virus used your own files against you, able to ransack the programs on your computer for the bits of code it needs? Judging from the progress made on the Frankenstein virus, a venture sponsored by the U.S. Air Force, that may soon be a reality. More »

Sony Xperia J gets a pre-unveiling hands-on, suggests we’ll get exactly what we pay for

Sony Xperia J gets a preunveiling handson, suggests we'll get exactly what we pay for

Giving Sony phones hands-on time before they’re even announced must be in vogue this year. Hot on the heels of its look at what’s now called the Xperia T, Mobile-review has given the entry-level Xperia J a full inspection without even the hint of a press release in sight. The very, very early review makes clear that cost-cutting is the rule of the day: a 2010-era Snapdragon chip, 512MB of RAM and a fairly low-grade 4-inch LCD don’t afford much in the way of bragging rights. The absence of a microSD card slot doesn’t win any fans, either. Still, the Xperia J looks to be carrying a lightweight instance of Android 4.0 that keeps it reasonably up to date, the battery life is good and the 5-megapixel camera will capture some memories in a pinch. Sony could supposedly have its starter phone on the market as early as September, and for as little as 150 euros ($186) outside of a contract — no doubt the real selling point if it’s at all true, as the cost would be roughly half that of the already budget-minded Xperia U.
