MakerPlane lets you build an experimental aircraft with digital printers

DNP MakerPlane

If you’re a member of that mildly crazy tribe who want to build and actually fly their own airplane, MakerPlane has a new way of enabling your obsession. The open source aviation organization will allow you to download its plans and schematics for free, then build your plane’s parts using CNC (computer numerically controlled) mills and 3D printers. If you don’t have one of those lying around, you’ll be able to go to a “makerspace” replete with all the necessary tools to get your wings whipped up, instead. As for keeping the blue side up, open source avionics software will also be included, allowing bold dabblers to create digital flight instruments and displays. For now, the group is working on its first set of plans, led by an aeronautical engineer volunteer, and hopes to have that design (shown above) flying in time for the Oshkosh airshow in 2014. While you’re waiting, start looking for trusting souls brave enough to fly in a small plane you built yourself.

The World’s Lightest Packable Electric Guitar

When it comes to superlative adjectives, gadget mavens Hammacher are pretty good at it. Case in point, we have this $399.95 The World’s Lightest Packable Electric Guitar – which is definitely something when you think about it. Tipping the scales at a rather impossibly light 3 pounds, this self-proclaimed musical instrument is touted to be the lightest packable acoustic/electric guitar to date, and while it might be small in size, it definitely does not lack anything where performance is concerned, delivering a somewhat similar authentic feel and sound just like its full-sized counterpart.

Measuring a mere 28″ long, The World’s Lightest Packable Electric Guitar is a full-scale length 24.75″ guitar with 22 frets, allowing seasoned guitarists to enjoy accurate chord and finger placement without having to adjust one’s playing style to the instrument. It even comes with a detachable lap rest frame so that you can rest the guitar on your knee if the need arises. Half a dozen recessed chrome tuning pegs will ensure the half dozen D’Addario EJ15 Phosphor Bronze round-wound extra-light acoustic strings remain at the proper pitch at all times. Each purchase comes with its own soft carrying case for added convenience.

ooVoo updates its iOS and Android apps to support four-way video calls

DNP ooVoo updates iOS and Android apps to support fourway video calls

First ooVoo opened up four-way video chats on Facebook, and now the video calling service is doing the same for its Android and iOS apps. The company just updates both applications so that you can view up to four video streams at once, though you can carry on text chats with as many as 12 people. That’s true of both platforms, though the Android version is admittedly getting a few more changes. The newest version of the app brings deeper integration with Google services, plugging into the native Android address book to show missed calls, as well as a list of which friends are available to chat. To that end, Android users get not just the app, but also a widget that displays these tidbits at a glance. Rounding out the list of improvements, the updates introduce push notifications as well as the ability to text chat in the middle of a video call.

EBay bans the sale of metaphysical items

There has always been a long list of items that aren’t allowed to be sold on the auction website eBay. These items span everything from hazardous materials to medical devices requiring a prescription. EBay has announced that it is adding more items to the list of products that can’t be sold on the auction site. The products include anything classed as metaphysical.

Metaphysical covers many items and basically includes anything such as advice, spells, curses, magic, blessing services, healing sessions, work from home businesses, and a number of informational lists. The items will be banned starting on August 30 of this year. The ban will affect people who sell services and items that have to do with psychics such as tarot cards and other items.

Some people are unhappy about the new rules that seek to ban intangible items and items of an occult nature. Some believe that eBay is banning items based on witchcraft or pagan beliefs. These people point out that eBay is still allowing products such as rosaries, crucifixes, and religious medals to be sold along with items like crystals and magnetic therapy jewelry.

Some users who don’t agree with eBay’s new bans have started a petition called “Don’t ban our psychics on eBay.” So far, the petition has 1009 signatures and seeks to challenge eBay’s perceptions of what makes an item intangible. What do you think about this ban?

Peter Thiel sells 20.1M shares of Facebook stock

Peter Thiel was one of the earliest investors and Facebook and owned a huge amount of stock in the company when Facebook made its IPO. Thiel’s venture capital firm Founders Fund sold 20.1 million shares last Thursday and Friday in Facebook. The billionaire was one of Facebook’s early investors and is a board member of the social networking company.

Word of the massive stock sale came from financial documents filed yesterday with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The sell off of 20.1 million shares represented 72% of the shares voted by Thiel. The massive sell off of Facebook stock by Thiel and his Founders Fund has to make other investors worry about the future of their investment.

Facebook stock has continued to decline after selling for $38 per share during its IPO. Yesterday shares fell below $19 during trading, but closed at $20 for an increase of around 5% before the 20.1 million share sale was disclosed by the SEC. Speculation surfaced last week that Thiel would shed stock in the social network after the expiration of the lockup agreement. That agreement prevented 271 million shares held by early investors and employees from being sold.

Thiel still owns shares personally and has voting control over shares owned by Founders Fund. Forbes reports that Thiel personally grabbed about $285 million after taxes by selling off stock in Facebook. Thiel has been an investor in Facebook since 2004, when he offered $500,000 for over 10% of Facebook, still known as Thefacebook at the time.

Apple patent reveals a system that replaces commercials or unwanted content with stored media

While some commercials might be entertaining and amusing, for the most part we’re sure that many of you guys out there switch channels when your TV show is on a break and commercials start playing. The same could apply while listening to radio which is why plugging in media players into vehicles or popping in a CD would be a more attractive alternative. However if you’re too lazy to switch channels or the radio station, a recently discovered patent by Apple has revealed a system where users can switch away from commercials either from radio or video and replace it with stored media instead, like a song on your phone.

This switching is done automatically, and if you’re wondering how this is achieved, it actually uses metadata  from assets like the Radio Data System, broadcast listings or published third-party schedules to help determine when an upcoming content might not be of interest to you, the listener/viewer. The system will then switch to your stored media until the content has been passed and will then resume regular radio/video services again. The system will also be able to determine what the user likes or dislikes through a system similar to Pandora, where users can like or dislike a song and the system will then “learn” your preferences. No word if Apple has plans to incorporate this patent into any of their upcoming products, but being able to skip ads and whatnot sure sounds like a great feature for Apple’s rumored iTV!

Apple gets patent for process that replaces unwanted media with user content

DNP Apple patent aims to squash ads, replace them with your favorite tunes

If your favorite audio or video broadcasts are spamming you with obnoxious ads (or anything else you don’t like) an Apple patent describes a process to cut them out — then substitute your personal content. First, the system would check media in real time through audio analysis or metadata scanning. Then, it would determine if it’s “of interest” to you by checking it against a profile based on your listening habits or personally defined preferences. Finally, if it thinks you’re into a particular stream, it would continue playing it, and if not, it could blast something from your own collection. The patent claims even describe a TiVo-like time-shifting function — ensuring you’d catch that entire guitar solo while not missing a single word from your favorite show.

Hearthfire trademark filed, possible name for next Skyrim DLC?

While Skyrim: Dawngard has yet to make its way onto the PlayStation 3, due to it being not good enough, it seems that those who are enjoying the DLC might have another DLC to look forward to in the future. In a trademark filed by Bethesda’s parent company, Zenimax, the name Hearthfire has been revealed. Given that the name Hearthfire is used to refer to the 9th month of the in-game calendar, the name should not come as a surprise and to a certain extent it is rather appropriate. Of course details of the Hearthfire DLC is pretty zero at this point, assuming it is even a DLC to begin with. However if and when it does launch, thanks to Bethesda’s deal with Microsoft, Xbox 360 owners can expect to enjoy it as an exclusive before it makes its way onto other platforms. In any case we certainly hope that Bethesda is able to sort out the issue Dawngard is having with the PlayStation 3 platform as we’re sure that players would rather play Dawngard than have to wait for the next DLC, which may or may not have issues with the PlayStation 3 as well. We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for more info, but until then what do you guys think Hearthfire could feature?

Additional Sony NEX-5R images leaked

Earlier today we reported that photos of Sony’s upcoming NEX-5R and NEX-6 cameras had leaked. Well if you thought that the photos did not do the camera justice, the folks at Sony Alpha Rumors are back and this time with alleged press shots of the NEX-5R. Details of the cameras remain somewhat of a mystery, although according to the rumor mill, both the NEX-5R and NEX-6 could sport WiFi connectivity, allowing users to transfer photos wirelessly, phase detection AF pixels on its image sensor and, with the NEX-6 sporting a brand new 16MP sensor as well. Of course since none of this is official, it should be taken with a grain of salt, but what do you guys think?
