Samsung spending $4 billion to renovate Austin semiconductor factory

Premiership footballers will be weeping in envy at the way Samsung’s been spending its cash this month. After splashing $822 million on a Korean R&D center, it’s now chucking $4 billion to renovate its semiconductor factory in Austin, Texas. The cash will be used to increase production on system-on-chip products used in a wide variety of smartphones and tablets, presumably to cope with future demand. It’s not clear if this investment is in addition to the $1 billion it was raising in January to add a new SOC and OLED line to the same facility, but it’s certainly a good time to be living in Texas, right now.

The iTypewriter concept reminds us of the good old days

Let’s face it, typewriter keyboard accessories for the iPad isn’t exactly a groundbreaking idea. In fact we’ve seen several in the past, although the former was an April Fools’ joke. However if you like the idea of being able to use a typewriter to type away on your iPad, perhaps you miss the feel of a typewriter or maybe even the loud clacking noises that come from the keys (we have to admit it’s somewhat of a pleasure), then this iTypewriter concept might be of interest to you. As the name itself has suggested, it is merely a concept although we’re sure that there are some of you guys out there who wouldn’t mind seeing it being made a reality.

Based on the picture, the keys are connected to rubber pads which will press against your iPad’s onscreen keyboard. We assume those rubber pads are capacitive and should function like styluses, allowing their hits to register on the tablet. According to its designer, Austin Yang, elderly folks who might not have used an iPad before might find it easier due to the familiarity of the typewriter. Of course we’re not sure how true that is, but it’s something worth thinking about. No word on when Yang plans to turn the iTypewriter into a reality, but what do you guys think? Any takers?

iPod nano stock shortages suggests a possible refresh is close at hand

September is certainly a month to look forward to, especially if you’re a fan of Apple products. While nothing has been set in stone yet, many believe that Apple will be introducing to the world their next-gen iPhone and the rumored iPad mini. However it seems that there might be more and a refreshed iPod nano could be one of the products revealed as well. With the iPod nano due for a refresh, a possible tie-in with the September announcement isn’t really a stretch of the imagination, plus with major retailers such as Amazon, Walmart and Best Buy apparently running low on stock (or completely out of stock) on the iPod nano, it seems that a refresh could indeed be imminent.

These are some of the tell-tale signs that you can look out for, because if Apple was planning on introducing a refresh product, they will usually tell their retailers to wait for new stock instead of shipping them existing ones. On the flipside there could always be something wrong with the manufacturing process which could explain shortages, but a refresh would seem more likely. In any case we will be keeping our eyes peeled, so remember to check back with us in September for the details!

The Bloombox is an iOS speaker dock that lets you grow a plant in the middle of it

We’ve seen plenty of iOS speaker docks which claim to be green because they are made out of natural materials and because no electricity is required. Instead the sound is usually amplified naturally by making use of the science of acoustics. If you’re a fan of such systems, then this Kickstarter project called the Bloombox might be worth taking a look at. Pictured above is the “device” and basically it’s a stand for your iPhone or iPod touch with a hollowed out middle.

As you can imagine, its creators have hollowed out the middle not just for acoustic purposes, but so that you can actually use the empty space to grow some plants, or maybe even set up a tiny Zen garden. While some might think that this is a little frivolous and novel, we have to admit that we like the idea. Not only does this double up as a natural amplifier for your iOS device, but at the same time looks like it will be a nice piece of home decoration that you can proudly display on your coffee table. If you’d like to learn more or to contribute to this Kickstarter project, head on over here for the details.

AMC supports A. Zombie for president

Some of my favorite TV shows are on AMC and if DirecTV was to drop the network, I’d be looking for a new TV provider. I’m sure there a lot of people on Dish Network that are still angry that Dish dropped AMC leaving them unable to watch The Walking Dead and other shows AMC offers. AMC is still trying to get Dish to pick its network back up allowing customers to watch the programming they want.

AMC has decided on a strange, yet somewhat humorous, advertising campaign that ties in with the networks insanely popular zombie themed TV show The Walking Dead and the 2012 presidential race. AMC has announced that it supporting A. Zombie for president. The zombie candidate will announce his candidacy at a rally on Monday, August 20 at Westfield Horton Plaza in San Diego.

AMC’s A. Zombie candidate is married to human wife named Patty Morgan-Zombie, and the duo will be on a cross-country bus tour taking them to six major cities in the United States. The goal of the campaign is to bring the pro-zombie message to Republican and Democratic conventions. The real goal is to rally support to force Dish Network to bring AMC back to the satellite service.

The campaign trail will take A. Zombie to San Diego on August 20, Dallas on August 24, Tampa for the Republican convention on August 28, Atlanta on September 1, Charlotte for the Democratic convention September 3 and 4, and New York City on September 5. The new season of The Walking Dead will premiere on October 14. The Walking Dead is the most-watched basic cable scripted drama series among Dish subscribers according to Nielsen. I wonder if A. Zombie is any relation to Rob.

Ford C-Max Hybrid can go 570 miles on a single tank of gas

Ford is understandably proud of its C-Max Hybrid vehicle and continues to tout the car’s fuel sipping prowess compared to the Toyota Prius V. The C-Max Hybrid was rated by the EPA for 47 mpg in the city and 47 mpg on the highway. That 47 mpg rating both in the city and on the highway is unusual. Typically, hybrids have better fuel efficiency in the city.

Ford is now bragging that it’s C-Max can drive 570 miles on a single tank of gas. By comparison, the Toyota Prius V is capable of driving only 450 miles on a single tank of fuel. That means that the C-Max driver can go an additional 120 miles before stopping to fill up with fuel compared to the Toyota.

The C-Max driver won’t be spending a lot of time at the gas station. The 570-mile driving range on a full thinking gas is enough fuel to take a driver from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and back on a single tank. Hybrid vehicles are traditionally more efficient in the city because they often take advantage of start/stop technology and regenerative braking.

Ford used a number of innovations in the C-Max that allows the efficiency to continue at highway speeds where there is no start and stop driving. Not only is the C-Max Hybrid more fuel-efficient than Prius V while offering an extra 120 miles of driving per tank of fuel, it’s also cheaper. The C-Max starts at a base price of $25,995.

That’s $1300 cheaper than comparable Prius V. Other features of the C-Max Hybrid include EV mode where the vehicle can travel on battery power alone up to 62 mph. The vehicle also has 188 net horsepower making it more powerful than the Prius V. The C-Max also has more passenger space than the Toyota as well.

Couple meets through Gears of War, gets married and hosts a Gears of War themed wedding

We’ve heard of how gamers have met up in real life and become really good friends, and we’ve heard of gamers who have met in game and started dating and eventually getting married. Well if you’re a romantic and believes that love can indeed be found anywhere, here’s one more gamer wedding you can add to the list. Gears of War gamers Megan and Jeremiah met each other through, well, Gears of War back in 2006 although both were dating other people at that time. However as fate would have it, they both became single and started seeing each other. As a way of proposing to Megan, Jeremiah hid the engagement ring in a seemingly sealed copy of Gears of War 3, where she said yes (obviously). The couple even had a Gears of War themed wedding and if you head on over to the source link below, you can see photos of the couple cutting the wedding cake using the Retro Lancer, which is a weapon from the game for those who might be unfamiliar. Kind of heartwarming, isn’t it?

HTC eyes the enterprise market with $35.4 million investment into Magnet Systems

HTC logoWhile the commercial sector is a pretty lucrative one, the enterprise sector can be too and it seems that HTC might be interested in getting their foot in the door. According to reports, HTC has made a $35.4 million investment into Magnet Systems, which for those who are unfamiliar, is a US-based developer of a platform for building enterprise apps. This investment is expected to give HTC a 17.1% stake in the company. Of course it is a bit early to tell what HTC might have planned for the enterprise sector – could it be just software or hardware or maybe even both? With HTC’s investment in OnLive taking a dive due to the company undergoing a restructure, some are saying that this move of HTC’s reeks somewhat of desperation. In any case it will be interesting to see what HTC can take away from this, so stay tuned for more updates in the future.

T-Mobile and Orange to rebrand as Everything Everywhere, sell 4G spectrum to rival Three (update)

T-Mobile and Orange to rebrand as Everything Everywhere, sell 4G spectrum to rival Three

When UK networks T-Mobile and Orange united under the Everything Everywhere umbrella, many people speculated if the two would become a single entity. That didn’t happen, but according to Sky News, that rollout of 4G services in October will also be part of a rebrand. The sources claim that new customers will join Everything Everywhere, with existing customers to be migrated around March 2013. A statement from Everything Everywhere acknowledges there was a confidential brand review, but refuses to comment on the speculation. Rival networks are already complaining that the approval of spectrum for use with 4G services gives the joint venture an unfair advantage, but the FT reports that the European competition authority has forced the pair to sell some of that spectrum — and is in “advanced talks” with competitor network Three. This could mean that there are two operators offering next generation services, but neither being Orange or T-Mobile, or rather, not as we know them.

Update: We’ve received the following official statement from Everything Everywhere:

Everything Everywhere confirms that we are planning to launch a new brand in the UK later this year. This new brand will sit alongside our existing brands Orange and T-Mobile. We will reveal more information on our exciting plans in due course.

So, it looks like the existing brands will remain, with a mysterious new addition in the mix. It’s also confirmed that the new brand won’t simply be “Everything Everywhere,” but instead something totally new. More as we get it.

MIUI gets updated to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, now available for the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus

Android users have quite a few choices to pick from when it comes to flashing custom ROMs onto their phones. There’s the ever popular CyanogenMod and there’s also MIUI. If you’re a fan of the latter, you might be interested to learn that the team behind the ROM has updated its code base to Jelly Bean. Unfortunately it seems that the Jelly Bean-based ROM will not be available for all devices just yet and only the Nexus S and the Galaxy Nexus are the lucky ones who will be able to flash the ROM onto their phones. If you own either device, you can head on over to the MIUI forums to check out the changelog and to see what sort of features and changes you can expect, or you can head on to another part of the forum where you will be able to download the ROM for yourself. As usual, you should proceed with caution and remember to back up your device before making any changes!
