Earthquake Prediction: Technology To Warn Of The Next Big Quake In Advance

Dr. Lucy Jones joined HuffPost Live and HuffPost Science Senior Correspondent Cara Santa Maria today to give the inside scoop on the new earthquake warning technology out of USGS.

Jones revealed that USGS could eventually let people know to duck and cover before the ground beneath their feet starts shaking. “We’ve reached the point where we can process things so quickly that we have the potential of getting you the information that an earthquake’s begun before the waves themselves get to you,” said Dr. Jones.

Dr. Jones demonstrated an earthquake early warning system that can give precious seconds of warning before an earthquake reaches you. But the system isn’t in place for actual use yet, so Dr. Jones and I got down on the floor to demonstrate what to do in case of an earthquake.

Todd Akin Tied With Claire McCaskill After Rape Comments, Poll Shows

WASHINGTON — Todd Akin was effectively tied with Sen. Claire McCaskill, 44 percent to 43 percent, in a poll released Monday night by the Democratic firm Publicy Policy Polling. That’s little different than PPP’s last poll in May, which found Akin leading 45 percent to 44 percent.

The new survey, conducted from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Central time, found that while 75 percent of Missouri voters thought that Akin, a GOP congressman from Missouri, was inappropriate in his comments Sunday about “legitimate rape,” they still planned to vote largely among party lines.

HuffPost Pollster’s chart, which tracks all publicly available polling, shows Akin ahead by about 4 percentage points.

Motorola Droid Xyboard 10.1 to receive Android 4.0.4 update

We took a closer look at the Motorola Droid Xyboard 10.1 and Motorola Droid Xyboard 8.2 at the end of last year, and after 8 months plus down the road, just how do these two tablets fare? For those who are rocking to the Motorola Droid Xyboard 10.1, here is some bit of good news for you – the Wi-Fi models as well as Verizon’s Droid Xyboard variants should be on the receiving end of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich updates already, and this roll out is expected to continue in the weeks ahead. Do not expect a visual change that will cater more towards the Droid RAZR, but at least this is a step in the right direction despite the lack of an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update.

This bit of news came about after Verizon posted the support documents for the Droid Xyboard 10.1′s very own Ice Cream Sandwich update, bumping it up to Android 4.0.4 in the process. Better than nothing at all, don’t you think so?

BitInstant founder says BitCoin debit card to launch within next two months

BitInstantbacked BitCoin debit card to launch within next two months

A BitCoin debit card could be in your very near future thanks to the efforts of trader-backed BitInstant. That fund transfer outfit, dedicated solely to the digital currency, has partnered with an undisclosed international bank to launch a branded debit card within six to eight weeks. News of the development first surfaced yesterday during an online chat with company co-founder, Charlie Shrem, in which he confirmed the cards would cost users $10 apiece to purchase and carry a 1% bitcoin transfer fee, as well as $1.50 ATM withdrawal fee. To further streamline the exchange process, users will be able to make quick transfers under $1000 by scanning a QR code overlay on front or by accessing the personal BitCoin address listed on back — all possible with a single confirmation. Initially, the cards will be denominated solely for USD, GBP and EUR, but more foreign currencies could soon be added in the lead up to its official debut. For now, those are the only bits Shrem was willing to share, as further details on this plastic alternative will be forthcoming prior to official launch. Until then, there’s always AMEX.

Borderlands 2 goes gold

Gearbox announced just last month that Borderlands 2 is ready and complete, where it was then duly bundled for the certification process. Good to know that after all this while, Borderlands 2 has gone gold – and to put it in layman’s terms, this means that the average gamer on the street will soon be able to pick up this 58-hour or so game – very, very soon. Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox, tweeted, “Borderlands 2 is now GOLD (360, PS3 EU, PS3 NA, Win PC)! PSN, PS3 JP + others imminent. Official statement to come when all ballots are in.”

It ought to arrive in less than a month’s time, so you might want to make better use of the days and weeks ahead occupying yourself with Diablo 3′s Paragon System when it arrives with patch 1.0.4 sometime this week, assuming all goes on as expected in a peachy keen manner. What are you looking forward to in Borderlands 2?

Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus image spotted

Earlier this morning, we mentioned about the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini as well as the Galaxy S2 Plus, and here we are where you can see to your right, an image of the Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus, thanks to VTR, a mobile carrier in Chile, spicing up the Interwebs in the way that South Americans only can. It does seem as though the Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus will come with a rather generous 4.5″ AMOLED touchscreen display which clearly nudges it closer towards phablet territory, in addition to being paired with a dual-core 1.5GHz Exynos processor. LG Optimus Black to receive Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update?

There does not seem to be a clear channel of communication over at LG with their customers when it comes to operating system updates of their Android-powered smartphones. We have had hot-and-cold responses concerning the LG Optimus 2X and LG Optimus Black’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich treatment, ranging from having the update coming our way before a denial, followed by a confirmation for the LG Optimus 2X recently – but even that seemed to be limited to South Korea only.

Here is some visual proof that will definitely keep owners of the LG Optimus Black happy, where the latest retail boxes of the LG Optimus Black come with “Android 4.0 ICS upgradable” stickers. No idea on whether this is a legit image though, nor where can such boxes be found, but they are labeled in English, so you can be sure that South Korea is not the country where these LG Optimus Blacks will be sold. Do you think the image itself holds water as being legit?
