First pictures of iPhone 5 display (Rumor)

The next generation iPhone, where many have dubbed it the iPhone 5 in the process, seemed to have its display leaked in a bunch of fresh photos, offering a glimpse at the alleged 4” display which has been touted by many to arrive on the new smartphone. The images that you see above do not seem to reveal too much since the unit remains unpowered, at least it is the first to show off the alleged larger display. It does seem as though the display’s connectors, which was shown in an additional close-up shot, do seem to point towards a layout that is not too different from its predecessor’s flex cables.

4” will certainly be larger than the current 3.5” display as found on the current generation iPhone, but then again, when you consider what we have on the Android front, 4” is relatively smaller by some. No idea on the final resolution count as well as pixel density of the next generation iPhone or iPhone 5, but I guess we will have to wait until later this year – most probably in September, to hear more about the new iPhone.

Pot Shop Ban Lawsuit: LA Sued Over Impending Storefront Shutdown

By Dan Whitcomb

LOS ANGELES, Aug 17 (Reuters) – A medical marijuana trade group and 11 patients sued the city of Los Angeles on Friday, seeking to block enforcement of an ordinance that would shut down most of the city’s storefront pot dispensaries in three weeks.

The lawsuit, which says users are protected by California’s 1996 legalization of medical marijuana and the U.S. Constitution, seeks an immediate injunction to keep Los Angeles officials from shuttering dispensaries starting on Sept. 6.

The plaintiffs also hope to ultimately overturn the ban in Los Angeles, home to more pot shops than any other U.S. city, in litigation that marks the latest battle in a chaotic fight over medical marijuana that has sometimes pitted federal, state and local officials against each other.

“The medical marijuana center of the globe is L.A. just as much as the movie capital of the globe is L.A.,” said Marc O’Hara, executive director of Patient Care Alliance, which filed the lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court. “There are more dispensaries here than in the rest of the country.”

City officials estimate there are some 750 registered dispensaries in Los Angeles and as many as 200 more without proper registration.

The Los Angeles City Council voted 14-0 in July to close down storefront medical marijuana shops in what Councilman Jose Huizar, who introduced the measure, called a “gentle ban” because it allowed for the drug to be cultivated and shared by groups of three patients or caregivers.

“Relief is coming in the form of having a more focused and intense crackdown on these dispensaries that cause problems in our neighborhoods,” Huizar said at the time. Earlier this month authorities sent letters to store owners telling them to close by Sept. 6 or face fines and jail time.

State rules governing the distribution of medical marijuana remain fuzzy and judges and appeals courts have issued sometimes conflicting rulings on municipal attempts at regulation.

Huizar said in response to the lawsuit that a recent California appeals court decision had sided with Los Angeles over its efforts to rein in pot shops and was confident the “gentle ban” provided sufficient access to medical marijuana.

Patient Care attorney Arthur Hodge said the Los Angeles’ ordinance amounted to an outright ban because it was impractical for groups of three people or less to cultivate medical-grade marijuana.

California became the first U.S. state to decriminalize medical marijuana in 1996 and was followed by 16 other states and the District of Columbia.

The law has caused friction with the federal government, which classifies cannabis as an illegal narcotic and makes no exemption for medicinal uses. Federal authorities under the Obama administration have sought to crack down on dispensaries in California and elsewhere in the U.S. West.

Hodge said he hoped for more clarity on the issue from the California Supreme Court, which he believes may take up the issue early next year.

“I hope that the Supreme Court comes down on our side and we can return to a compassionate approach,” he said. “There shouldn’t be a collective on every corner. I’m the first to say that. But this is an overreaction. It’s throwing the baby out with the bath water.” (Reporting by Dan Whitcomb; Editing by Dan Grebler, Cynthia Johnston and Lisa Shumaker)

Kevin Yoder, House Republicans Reprimanded For Drinking, Nudity In Israel

A group of House Republicans were reprimanded last August for taking a late-night swim in Israel’s Sea of Galilee that reportedly involved drinking and nudity.

As Politico reported Sunday night, a number of Republican lawmakers on a fact-finding trip to Israel were involved in the incident, including Reps. Kevin Yoder (R-Kan.), Steve Southerland (R-Fla.), Ben Quayle (R-Ariz.), Tom Reed (R-N.Y.), Jeff Denham (R-Calif.) and Michael Grimm (R-N.Y.). Some spouses, family members, and staffers were also present. According to the report, Yoder took off his clothes before entering the reservoir, which the Bible cites as the place where Jesus walked on water.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), who was on the privately-funded trip but not involved in the late-night swim, was “livid” about his colleagues’ antics and scolded them for their behavior. A Cantor spokesman confirmed the episode to the ABC News.

LG Optimus Vu goes global, trades Snapdragon processor for NVIDIA Tegra 3

LG’s extra-wide handset appears to be embarking on a world tour, and its packing a new processor for the trip. The Optimus Vu will be taking NVIDIA’S Tegra 3 chip to select markets in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America this September. It’s still rocking that 5-inch 4:3 ratio IPS display, of course, but gone is any mention of LTE connectivity. There’s no word yet if we’ll see an LTE-equipped Tegra 3 handset hit Yankee shores when our time comes, but we certainly wouldn’t bat an eye. Read on for LG’s official press release.

Bioshock custom rig is Big Daddy of pinball machines, gives players a taste of Rapture

Bioshock custom rig is Big Daddy of pinball machines, gives players a taste of Rapture

If you’re going to revisit a certain underwater dystopia, you might as well have a ball. At least that’s the approach being taken by Sweden-based DIYer rasmadrak, who has decided to build a Bioshock-themed custom pinball machine just for kicks. The project is filled with lots of neat little touches from Rapture, including Little Sister vents and a few Big Daddy homages. The builder also does a pretty good job of drilling into the details and providing insight on the creation process — like the challenge in using two different systems such as Arduino and chipKIT together, for example — via detailed posts in the Poor Man’s Pinball! blog. The project proved to be a pleasant shock to the system for fellow pinball aficionado Ben Heck, who gave the project a sprinkling of Heckendorn love via Twitter. Pinball geeks can also follow the saga, so to speak, by checking out the source link below.

OnLive officially announces asset acquisition, notes that its newly formed company will keep OnLive name

OnLive officially announces asset transfer, notes that its newly formed company will keep OnLive name

Amid the rumors, sourced reports and statements, it was easy to lose track of the facts surrounding OnLive’s recent restructuring efforts. No surprise then, that the newly formed outfit has issued a press release and FAQ (after the break) in hopes will clear things up. First and foremost, the firm reiterates that the streaming game service will continue operating uninterrupted, and that the “newly formed company” that acquired the firm’s assets will continue to do business under the OnLive name. The announcement also mentions the Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors (ABC) process OnLive used to settle its debts, noting that “an affiliate” of Lauder Partners, a technology investment firm, was the new OnLive’s first investor. Finally, the firm laments the necessity of laying off its staff, stating that “neither OnLive, Inc. shares nor OnLive staff could transfer under this type of transaction,” confirming that nearly half of the previous staff had been offered positions at the new company, and optimistically projecting future hires culled from both previous and new employees. The new OnLive calls the asset acquisition “a heartbreaking transition for everyone involved,” but looks optimistically to a future of “transforming the OnLive vision into reality.” Check out OnLive’s full, official word on the matter below.
