AT&T: FaceTime over cellular feature to be included in Mobile Share plans at no extra charge, not available for other data plans

AT&T FaceTime over cellular will be offered to Mobile Share customers

AT&T is offering a bit of clarification on the rumors involving a standalone feature offering FaceTime over Cellular for an additional charge: the iOS6 feature (due out this fall) will actually be included at no extra cost, but only for those customers who opt for the Mobile Share plans. Anyone on the grandfathered unlimited data plans or traditional tiered offerings will only be able to rely on the good ‘ol WiFi whenever they feel the urge to use Apple’s video chat service. From the looks of it, it seems that AT&T is hoping to conserve the amount of network bandwidth that would be chewed up by unlimited customers, while also having it function as a value-added feature for its newest shared data plans. In terms of usage, this FaceTime capability will use up part of your data allotment (instead of minutes). So, the good news is that the feature is free — the bad news is that it won’t make unlimited users any happier. Find AT&T’s official statement below.

Tokyoflash Sci-Fi Concept Watch: The Time is the Future

I like to know the exact time, since most of the time I’m either running late or trying to get somewhere at a specific time. However, that doesn’t mean that I always need to know the time, right down to the millisecond. Despite its minimal display this futuristic watch will tell time in minute intervals, which should be enough for most of us.

The Sci-Fi Inspired concept watch was designed by a guy named Alan, and his concept is inspired specifically by two films: 2001: A Space Odyssey and TRON:Legacy. You can readily see both influences in the design.

The square LED face is set into a metal case and has segmented metal band to go with. The outer circle tells the time in 5 minute blocks while the middle circle represents the hours. If you need to get a more exact reading of the time, the middle blocks are each for 1-minute, so the watch can be precise when it needs to be.

For now, this watch is a concept, but head on over to Tokyflash to vote for it, if you like it. If it gets enough support, it just might get made by the Japanese studio.

OnLive layoff rumor rages while company denies shutdown

This afternoon there’s been a rumor spread like wildfire across the gaming universe that the group known as OnLive has been shut down, all of its employees fired in the process. A comment from Brian Jaquet, OnLive’s Director of Corporate Communications, suggested that though they have no further comment, he wanted to make one thing known: “let me be clear. We are not going out of business.”

This comment was all that Forbes contributor Jason Evangelho was able to get out of the OnLive official aside from the basic “thanks for the note, we do not have a comment.” OnLive has not made any comment on the possibility of layoffs, whether they actually exist or not. They’ve also still left open the possibility of a purchase from on high. If another company has acquired OnLive, it would be easy to see how a rumor might spread that employees would be turned out quickly.

Earlier today, the rumor went something like this: Mashable appears to have been the first to receive the tip that an email was being sent out to news groups and partners from employees of the company:

“I wanted to send a note that by the end of the day today, OnLive as an entity will no longer exist. Unfortunately, my job and everyone was included. A new company will be formed and the management of the company will be in contact with you about the current initiatives in place.” – supposed OnLive employees

Now we must wait to see if OnLive will bring on a more extensive statement on the current status of their company and their employees. We’re expecting this situation to mostly be made up of bits of rumor and phone-game sorts of here-say, but you never know! Stick around on SlashGear to hear more as we find out!

Japanese Tape Dispenser Cuts Tape To Desired Length

T-EM50-Tape

If you were told you could listen to the radio at a reasonable level in your cubicle and that you were going to be allowed to keep your stapler, this is probably the tape dispenser for you. The T-EM50 by Kokuyo will spit out tape at pre-determined lengths again and again, ensuring a perfect piece of tape every time.

Why would you need this? I suppose if you want to save tape or need a specific length for closing envelopes. Otherwise, this kind of absolute precision seems like a bit of office overkill. However, considering some Japanese ballpoint pens cost $57, it’s clear that the land of the rising sun is definitely serious about their supplies.

The T-EM50 costs about $200 and will be available in September.

HP looks to give consumer tablets another go

HP is forming a new Mobility division which will make another attempt and breaking into the tablet space. This much was confirmed in a internal memo unearthed by The Verge, and details HP’s plan to form what has been dubbed the “Mobility Global Business Unit.” At first, HP’s Mobility GBU will focus on developing consumer tablets, and will do so under the guidance of Alberto Torres, who most recently was in charge of Nokia‘s MeeGo products.

The memo itself comes from Printing and Personal Systems Group boss Todd Bradley, who says that Torres will be starting on September 3. After tackling the consumer tablet space, HP Mobility GBU will then “expand to additional segments and categories where we believe we can offer differentiated value to our customers.” Torres will not be taking the reins on HP’s incoming commercial tablet, as that will be staying with HP’s PC Global Business Unit, overseen by James Mouton. The same goes for HP’s notebook teams, but Bradley seems to suggest that the Mobility and PC GBUs will be merging (or at least collaborating) at some point in the future.

According to the memo, Torres’ initial duties will be to “accelerate our tablet strategy and begin to execute products against our consumer/SMB target.” It sounds like HP wants to ramp up on this second shot quickly, but it has a tough road ahead. Most of us can still recall HP’s difficulties with the TouchPad after all, and it’s pretty clear that the company will be doing all it can to avoid another failure like that.

Torres has a couple weeks left to go before he begins at HP, but we’re thinking that once he’s there, HP will waste no time in putting him to work. Even though the TouchPad can’t be labeled a smashing success, it did have some redeeming features, so the idea of HP getting serious about tablet development does get us excited. Stay tuned to SlashGear for more information, as we imagine that HP will be making some announcements not long after Torres officially joins the team.

Campaign to build Nikola Tesla museum hits $500k in less than 48 hours, hopes to raise $850k

Campaign to build Nikola Telsa museum hits $500k in 48 hours,

Nikola Tesla may not have gotten all the credit he was due in his lifetime, but his stature has grown considerably since, and many of the inventions he dreamed up are now finding new life in today’s technology. Now, a new effort is underway to truly cement his place in history — even moreso than having David Bowie play him in a movie. Two days ago, Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal comic strip launched an Indiegogo campaign to help fund a Tesla museum at the site of Nikola Tesla’s laboratory in Shoreham, New York, and it’s now already raised over $500,000. That money will go directly to the non-profit Tesla Science Center, which has been attempting to buy the property for $1.6 million, half of which will be covered by a matching grant from the state of New York (meaning the goal for the campaign is $850,000, although anything raised above that will go toward the actual building of the museum). As Inman notes, however, even raising “just” $850k will ensure that the property isn’t sold to someone else and demolished, as others have been looking to do. Those interested in contributing can find all the details at the links below.
