Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 Student Edition means it is time to get back to school

It is time to get back to the humdrum life of classes, teachers, and bullies who kick sand into your face. Yes sir, I am referring to making that trip back to school after an unforgettable summer, and here we are with Samsung taking the initiative to release their Galaxy Tab 2 Student Edition tablet which will come bundled with a keyboard dock and an USB adapter without requiring financially constrained students to fork out more money than they have. This particular bundle will be good for only a couple of weeks, which means you get (on paper) $100 of additional value.

Retailing for $249.99, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 Student Edition will enable a busy student to get a setup that is somewhat reminiscent of a PC in just a short while, thanks to the included keyboard dock. Not only that, each purchase of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 Student Edition will also come with a bunch of recommended cool educational apps from Google Play to help you get started right out of the box. Powered by Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, this 7″ tablet will feature an integrated IR blaster that turns it into a potential universal remote, a microSD memory card slot, 8GB of internal memory, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a 3-megapixel camera at the back and a VGA camera in front.

Do you think the included keyboard dock is a subtle attempt by Samsung to go up against Microsoft’s Surface tablet when those arrive later this year? [Press Release]

Your Dog Needs Its Own Staircase Because You Disgust Him [Design]

Typically the first thing that goes through a dog’s head when he wakes up in the morning is “ugh, I have to trot all the way downstairs to eat my kibble on the same filthy steps as humans.” Architecture Firm 07Beach totally understands that sentiment, so it remodeled this home in Ho Chi Minh City to include a personal staircase just for Fido. Google Street View expands to cover swaths of Brazil and Mexican ruins, won’t substitute for a vacation

Google Street View expands to cover wide swaths of Brazil and Mexican ruins, won't substitute for a vacation

For a country that dominates the Latin American landscape, Brazil hasn’t had much of a presence in Google Street View outside of major cities like Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo. A fresh update to Street View coverage has just gone live that fleshes out the the more far-flung corners of the map. It’s now possible to see what it’s like on the ground in much of the southern tip of the country as well as the northern coastline. Further north, Mexicans get their own treat: Google is now providing the panoramic views for ancient ruins such as Chichen Itza and Teotihuacan, just in case you’d rather not try to blend in with all the other tourists. The widened reach is undoubtedly no match for booking a flight and visiting in person, but it will save you the trouble of brushing up on your Portugese or ancient Mayan.

Steve Jobs stolen iPad returned by repentant clown

It’s not just a descriptor of the personality of the brief owner of the late Steve Jobs’ iPad, Kenneth Kahn is actually a real performer also known as Kenny the Clown. This month Jobs family residence was broken into whilst being renovated, the thief being a friend of Kahn and, according to the clown, “a nice guy who made a horrible, horrible mistake.” The robbery had one Kariem McFarlin picking up tens of thousands of dollars worth of goods that included jewelry, Cristal Champagne, and lots and lots of Apple gear.

Of course as Apple implemented “find my iPad” and other location-aware software into their operating systems and newer gear over the past few years, it wasn’t long after the heist took place that the thief was caught. The thief confessed to the crime and the breaking and entering of other homes in the recent past once he was identified by the police via his iTunes account. Once he understood that he’d stolen goods from the home of Steve Jobs (a fact he did not known before the event), he wrote a letter of apology to Jobs’ widow.

The clown Kahn, on the other hand, simply gave the tablet back to the family, noting that he had no idea that it was stolen in the first place.

It would be like getting a football from Joe Montana that was stolen out of his house. If this thing weren’t so tragic, it would be comical. It’s bizarre; it’s really bizarre.” – Kahn

Kahn noted also that he’d coached McFarlin on a highschool basketball team more than ten years ago and had been friends with the man ever since. While the iPad was in the clowns possession, he used it to download songs to play while doing his clown routine for tourists and kids in the area.

Snowspeeder Sled for Year-Round Fun on Ice Planets

Snowspeeders are awesome. One of my favorite parts from The Empire Strikes Back is the Hoth battle, with those Snowspeeders zipping all over the place. If you want to make your own snowspeeder, this is how it is done. You just need some cardboard, duct tape and a can-do attitude.

After this Snowspeeder was finished by “Fortyozjuicebox”, it was attached to a sled base for some winter time fun. He actually made this for a Downhill Derby Cardboard and Duct Tape Contest. It may not take out an AT-AT walker, but she’s got it where it counts.

Judging by the video, it looks like a smooth ride as well. I guess it won’t be long until we see daily Snowspeeder races. I personally can’t wait.

SMS alerts you of an incoming missile attack

If you were to reside in a war torn country, or perhaps one that has a very high probability of an incoming attack happening at any time of the day, then it makes perfect sense for the government in power to be able to do its part in protecting their citizens. As everyone should know by now, Israel is a major sore point in the world of global politics, and it has been many a target of other countries that are bent in annihilating it. The Israeli Home Front Command has started an experiment throughout the country last week that will see it send mock text messages to cellphones and smartphones in the event of an incoming missile attack. This particular experiment recently ended. (more…)

iPhone reportedly vulnerable to text message spoofing flaw

iPhone reportedly vulnerable to text message spoofing flaw

If you’re an iPhone owner, you may want to use good judgment before responding to any out-of-the-blue text messages in the near future. French jailbreak developer and security researcher pod2g finds that every iPhone firmware revision, even iOS 6 beta 4, is susceptible to a flaw that theoretically lets a ne’er-do-well spoof the reply address of outbound SMS messages. As Apple is using the reply-to address of a message’s User Data Header to identify the origin rather than the raw source, receiving iPhone owners risk being fooled by a phishing attack (or just a dishonest acquaintance) that poses as a contact or a company. A proof of concept messaging tool is coming to the iPhone soon, but pod2g is pushing for an official solution before the next iOS version is out the door. We’ve asked Apple for commentary and will get back if there’s an update. In the meantime, we wouldn’t panic — if the trickery hasn’t been a significant issue since 2007, there isn’t likely to be a sudden outbreak today.
