Instagram 3.0 introduces Photo Maps

Instagram, the company that was purchased for a cool $1 billion thereabouts by social network giant Facebook, is back with a spanking new version of its software, calling it Instagram 3.0 (but of course!). Apart from fixing some of the speed and safety issues, Instagram 3.0 will also make improvement by introducing infinite scrolling as well as Photo Maps, where the latter is a geolocation feature that Instagram hopes to explore. Just how does Photo Maps work?

For instance, Photo Maps are a map-based display of the photos that you have already captured and added a geotag to it. Images snapped before the version 3.0 update are also eligible, although you could always take advantage of a toggle to turn them visible on your map, or simply to go down in a gung-ho manner, the proverbial guns blazing and all, with one more option of opting out altogether. Sept. 11 Memorial Defends Steel Cross Display

NEW YORK — A judge should toss out a lawsuit by a national atheists group seeking to stop the display of a cross-shaped steel beam found among the wreckage of the World Trade Center, lawyers for the operators of the Sept. 11 memorial at ground zero say.

The lawyers said in papers filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan on Monday that the 17-foot-tall beam will be displayed as a historical object because it tells part of the story of the rescue and recovery effort after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, which destroyed the twin towers and killed thousands of people.

Plaque Marks Chicago Site Of Obamas’ 1st Kiss

CHICAGO — The president first kissed his now-wife outside a Chicago ice cream shop – and there’s a plaque to prove it.

The owners of a Hyde Park shopping center installed the 3,000-pound granite marker this week with a plaque reading “On this site President Barack Obama first kissed Michelle Obama.” There’s a picture of the first couple and a quote from the president describing their first date.

FBI Affidavit: Floyd Lee Corkins, Family Research Council Shooting Suspect, Said ‘I Don’t Like Your Politics’

WASHINGTON — A man who volunteered at a gay community center had a backpack full of Chick-fil-A sandwiches and a box of ammunition when he said “I don’t like your politics” and shot a security guard at the headquarters of a conservative lobbying group, authorities revealed Thursday.

Floyd Lee Corkins, 28, was charged in federal court a day after opening fire in the lobby of the Family Research Council. The guard, who was shot in the arm, was wounded but was able to help wrestle the gun away and restrain the shooter, police said.

Kat Hannaford’s Favourite Gizmodo Post [Gizmodo 10]

Like any good nerdlinger, Simon Pegg is one of my favourite actors. It just so happens that I frickin’ hate the unnecessary gimmick that is 3D too, so when I spotted Pegg mouthing off in a 10-tweet tirade (sample: “3D used in films not aimed at children is like seeing someone you respect trying too hard. Like witnessing your dad in leather trousers”), I couldn’t help but post it. In true internet metaness-style, seeing Pegg’s next tweet, linking to my post about his tweets, I then self-combusted into flames. Or maybe that was due to Jesus’ death-glare, over my first (miserably naff) attempt at a blockquote image. Sozzlepops! More »

ClimateRight offers a cooling abode for your canine

Earlier this morning, we took a look at the Dog Caller which will inform you on your smartphone should the temperature of your pooch and its surroundings reach dangerously high levels that heat stroke is a possibility, so that you will be able to take some preventive measures. Well, another way of going around this issue would be to purchase the ClimateRight dog house, where this 2,500 BTU unit is able to heat, cool, purify and dehumidify pet houses as long as they are no larger than 350 cubic feet in size – translated to 7′ x 7′ x 7′ just in case you were wondering. Windows Phone 8 front frame leaked?

What you see above could very well be a front frame of an upcoming Windows Phone 8 smartphone, which is slightly different from the previously leaked front screen or bezel. There has been plenty of rumors as well as official confirmation concerning Windows Phone 8 devices in recent times, but what you see above is slightly different, where it sports the Proto.nokia.com branding on it, proving to those who believe that this is a customary branding for the entire range of Nokia prototypes, no exceptions given.

Apart from that, there is also Nokia branding on the right side instead of it being centered, so does that mean Nokia is leaving some space for a mobile carrier’s logo? The leaked image of this alleged front frame measures approximately 4″ in size, and we have absolutely no idea whether this is the future of the Lumia range. What do you think of it – could it be just another half decent Photoshop job, or is it actually the real deal?

Mobi Lens Clips onto Just About Any Smartphone or Tablet Camera

Add-on lenses for smartphones are one of the easiest ways of improving your mobile photography. I’ve seen some magnetic lenses, but what happens when your precious phone is hidden away underneath a protective case? Mobi-Lens comes to the rescue with an interesting design for a clip-on lens that will solve your woes.

Mobi-Lens is a clip-on lens system for mobile devices that features a lens on each side. You’ll have access to a fisheye and macro/wide-angle lens depending on which side you favor. While the design isn’t the most elegant, it does seem quite functional and versatile, thanks to its spring-loaded, Chip-Clip style design.

The Mobi-Lens was launched as a Kickstarter crowd-funded project, and you’ll need to pledge at least $30(USD) to get a single lens, and $60 or more for the two lens combo pack.
