Stream TV strikes deal with Hisense, outlines plans for real glasses-free 3D display

Stream TV has been touting its Ultra-D glasses-free 3D tech for quite some time now, but we’ve still yet to see anything resembling a marketable product. The company’s already snagged one manufacturing deal, but in the latest announcement of a partnership with Hisense it’s revealed the specs of an actual device — a 42-inch 1080p display. If you think the details end there… well, you’d be right, although the numbers do suggest something tangible is indeed in the pipeline. We might find out more at IFA 2012 where Stream TV will be showing off its latest gear, so here’s to hoping. And, if you’d like more info on the Stream TV / Hisense agreement, the full PR is available after the break.

Gliph App Creates Anonymous & Disposable Email Addresses

There is always a need for disposable and secure email addresses. I had a bunch of junk Hotmail addresses years ago for handling spam and subscriptions I didn’t want going to my main email address. Thanks to Gmail, I’ve whittled it down to only one, but maybe I should just dispose of it and get the Gliph app. It’s basically, this app is like the Burner app we featured a couple of days ago, but for email addresses.

gliph email app setup burner

Gliph is a free app for iPhones, Android and mobile devices. You can use it to send cloaked messages to other Gliph users or use it to send and receive emails to anyone through your regular email client. An example would be Craigslist transactions, which are always somewhat spammy. Unlike other free services like Gmail and Hotmail, Gliph email addresses are easy to create and delete, and all your emails sent via your addresses come to a central location, so there’s no need to log on onto multiple accounts.

When you open the app, you get to pick a string of 3 to 5 icons that represents you, instead of using a username. You get one free randomly generated email address when you sign up for Gliph, and once you’ve invited at least 5 friends, you can send attachments too.

Sony PRS-T2 eReader finally official for $129.99

We’ve seen it leak out a couple of times, but Sony’s next eReader is finally upon us. Those looking for something revolutionary won’t find it here, but Sony has made little tweaks here and there that should make your reading experience somewhat more pleasant. You’re still looking at the same 6-inch screen, with the E-Ink Pearl display refining touch support and adding more graceful paper-esque page turns and zooms along with improved continuous page turns.

Just as we learned last week, the dimensions of the eReader have been tweaked slightly, with the PRS-T2 coming in a 0.38-inches thick and weighing 5.9 ounces. The four navigational buttons beneath the screen have also been adjusted, with Sony making them larger and easier to push. The company says that the device should get up to two months of battery life (assuming WiFi is turned off, of course), and there’s 2GB of storage of all your digital books.

Sony is still offering access to its online services too, and a nice little bonus is the ability to borrow around 15,000 ebooks from its public library system if you have a valid library card. Sony’s Reader store is still on tap as well, offering magazines and newspapers via a web-based store. Anyone choosing to read a novel via web browser can do so via Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer and Firefox.

Finally, Sony is throwing in a free copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone from the Pottermore store. The company will bundle a download code that will grant you access to the ebook once you’ve purchased the ereader. The device itself will set you back $129.99, and Sony says it’s shipping right now via its online store.

Black and Decker screwdriver senses your hand movement to adjust speed, direction (video)

DNP Black & Decker

Were you feeling the need for new tech to replace the switches that control direction and speed on your cordless screwdriver? Us neither, but we’re not the braintrust at Black & Decker, which just launched the Gyro 4V Max, the “world’s first motion-activated screwdriver.” The company put an InvenSense MEMS gyroscope in the new model, so all you have to do to change the direction or speed is rotate your drilling hand one way or the other in varying amounts. After you’ve polished off that Ikea shelf, it should be ready the next time you haul it out of the toolbox, with a Lithium-ion battery that stays juiced for as long as 18 months. Judging by the video below the break, it actually looks pretty clever, and at $40, why not start dragging your tools out of the stone age?

CB Radio iPhone Handset

So your iPhone is the main mode of communication with the rest of the civilized world, be it through a phone call, text message or over a social network status update. Well, for those who love to merge the old and the new, here is the $19.99 CB Radio iPhone Handset which might just be your cup of tea – specially designed to resemble an old school CB Radio handset, it will instead function as an accessory for your handset. There is a mute button that makes the conversation work just one way for that added bit of realism, not to mention the CB Radio iPhone Handset comes with its own battery so that it need not tax your iPhone’s battery even further, not to say that the iPhone is able to last very long in the first place anyways.

All you need to do is plug in the CB Radio iPhone Handset into your iPhone, where it will also work with other smartphone with a 3.5mm headphone jack, and crank up the fun factor for retro fans. There is a dial located on the side that turns the unit on, while pumping up the volume. The microphone itself has been integrated into the cord for superior sound pickup.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti brings Kepler power with a cut on cost

It’s time for some fabulous 28nm Kepler action from NVIDIA with the GeForce GTX 660 Ti – bringing the fabulous next-generation graphics of Kepler GPU architecture in at a surprisingly affordable price. With the $299 Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti you’ll be rolling out with a base clock speed of 915MHz and no less than two dual-link DVI outs, HDMI, and a DisplayPort 1.2 to boot. Along with a fabulous 1,344 CUDA cores in the mix, you’re getting essentially the same package as the GTX 670 with a major chop-out on the cash cost.

With the GTX 660Ti you’ve got what NVIDIA tells us will be a lovely 150W TDP or down to 134W under “typical use”. NVIDIA also notes that here in the hardware’s 2GB video buffer you’ve got 192-bit GDDR5 RAM making it all hum nicely too – this is just below the GTX 670′s configuration which is 256-bit GDDR5. Configurations will vary between brand releases, of course, but most will be popping up with a bit of a bonus – Borderlands 2!

Have a peek at MAINGEAR’s release and see a couple of custom built limited-edition PCs made with the 660 Ti with Borderlands 2 included as well. You’ll find that NVIDIA is making an effort to come up directly against the AMD Radeon HD 7870, also on the market now, with both of them coming in at $299 standard.

NVIDIA has made claims that the GeForce GTX 660 Ti has had anywhere in between 10 and 30 percent performance gain over the AMD Radeon HD 7870, and has taken on the slightly more expensive $350 AMD Radeon HD 7950 as well. NVIDIA let it be known that in tests vs the 7950, their GTX 660 Ti came up with higher average frame rates, up to 20 percent in some cases, when testing games such as Max Payne 3.

And of course, as shown above, each new generation of NVIDIA’s GPU line keeps getting better and better! Stay tuned for more GTX 660 Ti action throughout the day, and stick around as we test our own build on a custom-built MAINGEAR review unit soon as well. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti will begin shipping today from all your favorite outlets, too, so get pumped!

World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria cinematic trailer released

MMORPG fans, if World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria is the expansion you’ve been waiting for, or if you’re unsure if you want to play this expansion, then you’re in luck as the cinematic trailer has been released at the Gamescom 2012 expo. It certainly looks like it could be an epic expansion, and as expected from Blizzard, the cinematic is pretty top-notch in terms of production quality. Of course given that there are pandas involved and there’s a lot of action going on, we can’t help but think of the Kung-Fu Panda movie, although we’re pretty sure that the name “Po” (and its variations) have already been reserved. We know that World of Warcraft is currently facing a decline in its subscribers, so perhaps Mists of Pandaria will be able to lure both old and new players into the game. So World of Warcraft players out there, what do you think of the cinematic trailer, and are any of you planning on coming back for Mists of Pandaria?

TiVo Premiere 4 offers quad tuners, 500GB for $249.99

Perhaps you’re not quite ready to cut the cord just yet, ever reliant on multiple tuners to get your television fix. The latest set-top box from TiVo should go a long way to helping you watch and archive everything, today introducing the Premiere 4. The box shares similarities between the Premiere XL4 that was announced earlier this year, with a shared design, quad-tuners, and the same connection ports.

Thanks to 500GB of storage, TiVo says around 75 hours of HD programming will be able to be recorded to the box before it fills up, and the company’s custom user interface helps customers find programmes with relative ease. When searching for a particular show, the box not only checks cable listings, but also online services such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Amazon Instant Video.

The box is compatible with digital cable (QAM) and Verizon FIOS, with ports including HDMI, Component, Composite, and optical plus analogue audio. CableCARD support is onboard, and other inputs include Ethernet, two USB 2.0 ports, eSATA, and MoCA. A TiVo Wireless N or G wireless adapter can also be plugged into the box if you don’t fancy running an Ethernet cable through your living room.

The Premiere 4 costs $249.99 outright, but comes with a one-year contract and a $14.99 monthly fee. TiVo says the box should be available starting from today online, with the device also heading to various home theater and Magnolia stores across the country in the near future.
