Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 4 will support HiDPI, MacBook Pro Retina Display in ‘the coming months’

You know who’s likely to buy the MacBook Pro with Retina Display? Creative professionals (obviously). So you know what programs should really be optimized for that 2,880 x 1,800 screen? Try Photoshop, or Lightroom. Adobe hears your frustration, and apparently empathizes mightily: the company just posted a blog post promising Photoshop CS6, Lightroom 4 and Photoshop Touch will support HiDPI, including the MacBook Pro’s Retina Display, within the “coming months.” (No, this near-term update does not include Photoshop Elements, unfortunately.) While that timetable is on the vague side, the outfit says having a Creative Cloud membership will ensure you get that update sooner. Until then, your frankengadget renders will still look a little blurry, sorry.

Brenthaven BX2 Camera Backpack: Nice Bag, But Too Baggy [Lightning Review]

Every week, it seems, a new bag company is out to court the crowded world of products for camera-wielding creative types. Brenthaven has been making laptop bags and luggage since the 1980s, but the name might not be extremely familiar in the realm of camera gear. We gave its BX2 backpack two weeks to show how well it can haul some gear. More »

ESPN delivers College Football app to iOS and Android just in time

If you’re a football fan, then we don’t have to tell you that college football kicks off this evening. But, perhaps, you have yet to find the perfect app for your smart phone or tablet to keep you informed during the fifteen solid hours of football this Saturday. ESPN hopes that its new ESPN College Football App will be the perfect companion on game day, and all year round for that matter, by delivering up to the minute news, stats and even video clips. The app ties in with your ESPN.com account for easy access to your favorite teams and of course will alert you to scores and other things, like potential upsets. It’ll even give you quick access to the WatchESPN app so you can check out a game on your second screen. Add in the fact that this app is free, and we don’t see any reason a football fan wouldn’t head to the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and download it right now.

[Thanks, @bartenz]

Curiosity rover leaves Mars landing site for first time

The Curiosity rover has finally left its landing site on the surface of Mars, beginning a journey for science. The trek that lies ahead of the rover will last for weeks, and will eventually end at Glenelg, the first major spot NASA scientists want Curiosity to explore. Curiosity has already completely the first part of this 400 meter trip, driving 52 feet before stopping to look around.

That stop only lasted for about a day, but it isn’t the only stop NASA has planned before Curiosity reaches Glenelg. In about a week, the rover will make another stop at a still-undetermined location, and it will be staying there longer to test out its robotic arm and some of the other instruments it has on board. Once it reaches Glenelg, the rover will be buckling down for awhile, and it’s there that scientists will put Curiosity’s drill to work for the first time.

Glenelg is of interest to NASA because it’s there that three different types of terrain meet. NASA stands to learn a lot from what Curiosity finds there, and even though NASA is planning to have the rover spend a significant amount of time Glenelg, that isn’t the rover’s intended final destination. The rover’s goal is to eventually make it the base of Mount Sharp, where it will study minerals to see if they were ever exposed to liquid water. The journey to Mount Sharp is going to be quite the trek, as Curiosity’s target lies 6 miles away from its landing zone.

For now, however, Curiosity is taking baby steps. That 52-foot drive completed earlier this week is the longest distance Curiosity has driven since landing on Mars, but it has a whole lot of land to cover between now and when it eventually gets to Mount Sharp. With Curiosity now on its way to Glenelg, we should have more updates for you in the coming weeks, so keep it tuned here to SlashGear for more details!

Jabba the Hutt Purse Perfect for Holding onto All Your Bounty

Ladies, the next time you decide to dress up in your Slave Leia outfit, you might need a purse to go with it. And there’s no more perfect handbag on the planet than this Jabba the Hutt purse I spotted over on Etsy.

jabba hutt purse

Artist Cat Penfold found an old lizard-textured vinyl purse and gave it the perfect Jabba the Hutt paintjob. She first coated it with a sickly green wash, then painted on Jabba’s beady orange eyes and double triple quadruple chin. His mouth took care of itself thanks to the shape of the purse. The whole thing has been coated with durable UV-protective finish, which should protect it from the harsh suns on Tatooine.

This one-of-a-kind Jabba handbag is available over Etsy for $80(USD), so if you want it, you’d better grab it now. If not, you might have to just settle for an Ewok purse instead…

What Would You Do With a Touchscreen Ultrabook? [Chatroom]

I didn’t like the idea of touchscreen ultrabooks when the rumors first popped up, and now that they’ve all arrived en masse, I still don’t like ’em. Sure, the product itself is fine, and they work as they’re supposed to, but the concept is just no good. They don’t fold, detach, or convert. And given the rise of multitouch trackpads, regularly poking at a laptop screen seems like something that just won’t be necessary. More »

CyberPowerPC intros ZeusM Ultrabook series, prices start at $679

There’s something going on in Berlin that’s left us with an array of upcoming laptops to look forward to, but believe it or not, there are still others looking for the spotlight in the portable department. And, well, such is the case with CyberPowerPC and its recently unveiled Zeus-M Ultrabook series. For starters, the 14.1-inch (1366 x 768) M unit alone starts off at a mere $679, which will get you a third-gen Core i5-3317U CPU paired with decent HD 4000 graphics, USB 3.0, a 60GB SSD and 4GB of RAM — or, there’s an option to make it 8GB for only 20 more bucks. Meanwhile, the pricier, better-specced M2 is $799 and boasts the same Intel processor as its M brethren, but does come standard with 16GB of RAM and a 120GB solid-state drive. Both M Ultrabooks are available now, with CyberPowerPC saying they’ll be ready to ship within 5 to 10 business days.
