Dog Caller calls owner when it gets too hot

Summers can be sweltering, where the mercury shoots up all the way – and we humans who have the advantage of air conditioning might not figure out just how it feels like to be a black Labrador Retriever with a double coat. Good thing there are those cooling down coats that dogs can wear to keep themselves cool, while pooches in the future might soon be able to wear special collars which will send a text message over to their respective masters should it get way too hot. Known as the Dog Caller (got to love the pun in the name), it features a heat sensor, cellular circuitry and a SIM card. Specially programmed to send out an alert once the temperature hits 79 degrees Fahrenheit, this device by Rethink Canada could potentially save the lives of future pooches.

The Dog Caller will be able to send out a text message alert with the current temperature reading so that the owner can take the necessary precautionary measures to avoid the unwanted. This idea was thought up of after the owner of a golden retriever nearly had his pooch overheat, so to speak, while he was out running an errand.

Kobo app for iOS goes international with support for Dutch, French, German, Italian and Spanish

Kobo app for iOS goes international with support for French, German, Italian, Spanish and more

Kobo’s Android app recently enjoyed a brief stint of global superiority, but that playing field has been leveled with the company’s latest update for iOS. Like the Android version, Kobo for iOS now includes support for Dutch, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Additionally, users will also find support for e-books encumbered with Adobe DRM. Lastly, Kobo for iOS now lets users choose which books to store locally on their device, and it also fixes a bug that’d prevented e-books from being opened — nice to get that one squared away.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean ROM for Samsung Galaxy S3 leaked

If you happen to own the Samsung Galaxy S3 and cannot wait for the official Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update to arrive, then you might want to take your chances with a leaked ROM – which obviously, is not official, but that does not mean it will not work. What you see above is a video of the official Jelly Bean ROM for the Samsung Galaxy S3 running nicely, although it is not released on an official basis just yet. The visual changes are not quite that drastic compared to the current Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, although you will get a smoother scrolling experience as well as being able to enjoy Google’s most recent additions to the Android environment. As usual, there are no promises of the leaked (albeit official) ROM working just fine if you want to perform an installation as you can never quite tell just when Murphy might strike.

Mass Effect 3: Leviathan dated by BioWare

BioWare has just announced the official date for the latest single player DLC for Mass Effect 3: Leviathan. According to BioWare, the presence of the Leviathan DLC will “expand upon the events of Mass Effect 3, with gripping and emotional storytelling, compelling new characters, and powerful weapons and upgrades.” So far not many details about the plot has been revealed, although the folks over at IGN did reveal earlier this month that Shepard has been drawn into Admiral Hackett’s hunt for the Leviathan, where this follows after the murder of a scientist who had started to make some advances in this particular search. At first glance, the murder looks to be some sort of Reaper indoctrination, but as the game progresses, the plot will naturally thicken – leading us to believe that other forces might be at play.

Whatever the ending is, you should be right there at the edge of your seats, just like how all good things will always need to come to an end. Just to make sure you make the necessary preparations, Mass Effect 3: Leviathan will arrive this coming August 28th for the Xbox 360, PC and PS3 in North America, while PS3 gamers in Europe will have to wait until another day.

Fujitsu’s Stylistic M532 quad-core tablet ships to the US with toughened body, dash of security

Fujitsu's Stylistic M532 quadcore tablet ships to the US with toughened body, dash of security

Fujitsu’s Stylistic M532 has had a protracted development process that saw it appear on our radar as early as January; imagine our surprise after it ships to the US with barely more than a knock on the door. Now that it’s here, it looks to be on the sunnier side of average for an Android 4.0 slate. A quad 1.4GHz Tegra 3, a 1,280 x 800 display and 32GB of built-in space won’t rock our world in mid-2012, but the rough-and-ready among us will likely appreciate the military-spec abuse tolerances and support for optional Absolute CompuTrace theft tracking, just in case it’s pilfered from an open bag. Fujitsu’s obstacles? Apart from not having much of a cachet in the tablet arena, the company also has to convince buyers that the extra safeguards are worth a $549 price — for those who treat their tablets more delicately, there are a few tempting alternatives.

Steampunk Lightsaber Flashlight

The Force is strong in this one – the Steampunk Lightsaber Flashlight that is the creation of one particular Star Wars fan who has her fair share of technological wizardry. Working together to be a rather nifty night light, you will need a plumbing extension pipe to complete the project. In fact, vent holes were also drilled around the pipe in order for the LED light to shine through, but that is not really necessary anyways. The plumbing pipe used above is made out of solid brass, so it will take a fair amount of skill to cut and drill it through. Sanding the metal gave it a brushed look, and even better news is doing away with any need for glue or additional rings to connect the flashlight to the “case”.

You know something? Someone should come up with a steampunk version of the Star Wars universe, as I am quite sure that there is plenty of material to work around with in terms of the back story. Who knows, you might have a far younger Yoda, or perhaps Yoda’s ancestor to keep up with the times where steampunk ruled the roost?
