Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 AllShare hands-on vs GSIII

When you purchase a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 this week, you’ll have a fabulous time sharing with none other than your favorite Samsung smartphone – the Galaxy S III. With the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note 10.1, you’ve got wi-fi direct connections with the app interface called AllShare. As it was with the Galaxy S III connecting with other Galaxy S III units when that model was released, so too is it with the Galaxy Note 10.1, a sharing environment created by Samsung to keep users in their own family of products exclusively.

What you’re about to see is some hands-on time with AllShare GroupCast, a system which allows several different kinds of media to be simultaneously displayed and interacted with on multiple devices at once. With the Samsung suite of devices that’s either out right now or will be popping up soon, you’ll have the opportunity to create a slide show that each of your friends can see on their devices instantly.

You’ll be flipping back and forth and making notes with near-perfect sync in no time! You can do this with the new Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, the Galaxy S III, and a large set of Samsung devices that’s not just limited to tablets and smartphones. AllShare is able to connect with your PC, with DLNA-connected devices, and in the future, with non-Samsung mobile devices as well.

Have a peek at AllShare on the Galaxy S III working with another Galaxy S III, AT&T to T-Mobile and back again.

Also dive into our AllShare portal to see a collection of Samsung devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 that also have AllShare on them right out of the box – it’s time to share!

Cigarette Packs Turned into Fighter Jets, Feel the Need for Speed…and Nicotine

Check out these awesome fighter jets made out of cigarette packs. They look pretty awesome. Who knew that the designs on cigarette packs would make such good looking fighter jets? Maverick this is Goose *cough cough*.

While I wouldn’t encourage anyone to take up smoking just so they can build fighter jet models like these, if you are already a smoker, you might as well create something beautiful out of your habit. Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em, then launch them around the house while singing “Take my breath awayyyyyy”.

You could probably even hide a smoke or two inside some of these. Play with your toy for awhile, then grab your smoke from within and light up. Or stick your smoke in these planes, light it up and the burning hot end will look like an afterburner. Hey, it’s up to you. Hit the link for more cool cigarette pack airplanes.

Samsung HM5100 Bluetooth S Pen makes a surprise debut in our Note 101 'press kit,' we pencil in a chat handson

Hidden among the higher-profile items at Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10.1 launch today was a device that at first seemed familiar, but turned out to be far more than your everyday S Pen. That’s right, Samsung’s already capable stylus just got a major boost — meet the BT S Pen. The device, which received no formal introduction during its host device’s launch event, first appeared in the “press kit” bag that attendees received on the way out the door. It’s similar in size and shape to the company’s Galaxy S Pen Holder Kit, which serves as a sleeve for the standard-issue Note S Pen, but Bluetooth functionality, along with a microphone and tiny speaker, enable the lightweight plastic contraption to double as a wireless headset — sure to come in handy with the SIM slot-equipped international Note 10.1 flavor.

We caught our first hint of the pen’s functionality upon discovering a bundled AC adapter — that seemed mighty odd. The box also included an unusually beefy user manual and no fewer than five replacement “nibs” (read: stylus tips). Pairing took but a few seconds, and then we were on our way answering calls with a single tap of the talk button. There’s also a built-in vibration mechanism, which serves to alert you to incoming calls. Sound quality was solid, but speaking into a pen admittedly felt a bit odd — you may not draw as many stares as you would if speaking directly into a 10.1, but the seemingly unusual action may still turn a few heads. Otherwise, the S pen functioned as expected.

The packaging is all we have to go off of at this point — Samsung reps we spoke to didn’t know to expect the device today, so there’s no pricing or availability info to share. We do know that it’s rated for three hours of talk time and 130 hours of standby, it weighs 21 grams, offers Bluetooth 3.0 compatibility and will work with Galaxy Note devices — you could use it as a headset with other gadgets, though there wouldn’t be much appeal. It also includes a micro-USB charging cable, with the port accessible just above the shirt clip. That’s all she wrote for now — apparently this accessory was available exclusively at today’s event, and may not make its way to the US, if it’s released at all. You can see it in action now though, in our hands-on video after the break.

Google Maps update for Android adds public transportation routes

Google has rolled out a new update for Google Maps, and it adds quite a few important things. First and foremost, users can now find public transportation schedules for 500 cities around the world. This was added due to the high volume of requests Google received from Maps users in big cities where a car isn’t necessary, and indeed, sometimes proves to be something a nuisance.

Even better is the fact that you can choose which public transportation system you want to see, be it bus, tram, train, or subway. In all, over 1 million different public transportation stops and departure times can now be found on Google Maps, which those living in big cities will find particularly helpful. In addition, the Google Maps app will now show an area surrounded by a border whenever when you search for a postal code. Also included is new My Places functionality, as you now have easier access to your saved maps, and if you have Location History turned on, you can browse through the locations you go to on a daily basis.

This update was rolled out not only to satisfy those living in big cities, but also to give Google an edge against Apple, which is planning its own navigation system with iOS 6. If the rumors are true and Apple is indeed planning to reveal the next iPhone during an event taking place at the beginning of September, then iOS 6 is right around the corner. Google is planning to bring Google Maps to iOS eventually, and it’s understandable that it wants to the app to be fully-featured when it arrives.

As time goes on, we’re seeing Google Maps become better and better. Google has done a lot to make Google Maps a worthwhile download, but the question is will it be enough when Apple’s own navigation system arrives on the scene? We’ll just have to wait and find out. Stay tuned, and be sure to check our story timeline below for more posts on Google Maps!

Wood Carved Maps Won’t Help You Navigate, But They’re Lovely [Daily Desired]

Maps are an essential tool for navigating, but they can also just be flat out beautiful. You see the ins and outs of different neighborhoods and get a clue how a city unfolded and developed. While the cleverly named Neighborwood maps of different cities aren’t something you’re going to stick in your back pocket next time you’re visiting a new place, they’re certainly something lovely to display in your home. Leaked photo allegedly shows iPad mini’s dock connector flex cable with headphone jack on bottom

Leaked photo allegedly shows iPad Mini's dock connector flex cable with headphone jack on bottom

Granted, the existence of a 7-inch iPad mini is far from confirmed, but the latest “evidence” to fan those rumor flames is a photo of what appears to be a dock connector flex cable that connects the smaller dock connector, headphone jack and home button connector. The photo appeared on the site Nowhereelse.fr, which also recently published photos that purportedly show the next-gen iPhone’s tiny docking connector. Other reports have indicated that the iPad mini’s headphone jack will be located on the top of the device (as it is on the current version of the tablet) as opposed to on the bottom, which would contradict this latest leaked photo, but this new layout corresponds to rumors about the iPhone 5. The one semblance of certainty in all this? iFixit‘s Kyle Wiens weighed in to say that the component “is consistent” with Apple parts.

The Best Video Camera Revealed in Shootout [Video Cameras]

Back in June, we wrote about the surprising conclusions that seasoned filmmakers such as Francis Ford Coppola came to after viewing Zacuto’s Revenge of the Great Camera Shootout 2012. The contest made many think again about video camera capabilities. Well, now the final piece to the documentary has been revealed, those same viewers might have to think AGAIN about thinking again.
