Potential Samsung Galaxy Note 2 bezel gets snapped, measured at 5.5 inches

Image

Here’s an image purporting to be of the Galaxy Note 2’s bezel, and if it’s a fake, it’s a very good one. Taken by a (sharper-than-usual) blurrycam snapper wearing factory-style dust booties, the hardware suggests a chunky, squared-off design for the second-generation phablet that rejects the Galaxy S III’s more curvaceous body. The ruler draped from corner-to-corner jibes with earlier rumors that it would have a slightly expanded 5.5-inch canvas for your S-Pen fun. We just have one question: does that photo make it look curved along the horizontal axis, or is the loose component just bendy?

Samsung SGH-T899 could be T-Mobile’s first Windows Phone 8 device

If you’re looking forward to the upcoming Windows Phone 8 platform and the devices accompanying it, the folks at TmoNews have managed to get their hands on a screenshot that reveals the user agent string of a certain Samsung Windows Phone 8 device. Sporting the model SGH-T899, it has also been revealed that this device will be arriving on T-Mobile’s network and is also expected to play nice with the carrier’s upcoming LTE network.

Its specs have also revealed a 4.65” 1280×720 display, which makes us think that this could be none other than the Samsung Odyssey Windows Phone 8 device revealed in court documents back in July. For those unfamiliar, back in July and as part of the ongoing legal dispute between Apple and Samsung, two Windows Phone 8 devices were revealed – the Odyssey and the Marco, with the former sporting a Super AMOLED 4.65” display, a Qualcomm MSM8960 chipset, along with an 8MP rear-facing camera and a 2MP front-facing camera. At that time it was unclear as to which carriers these devices were destined for, but assuming the SGH-T899 is the Odyssey, it seems that T-Mobile subscribers have something to look forward to.

Pinterest unveils new apps for Android and iOS

If you’re a big fan of Pinterest and have wished that there were mobile apps available to allow you to use the service on the go, prepare to be happy. As of yesterday, Pinterest officially announced the launch of new apps for Android, iPad, and the iPhone. Oddly, Pinterest says in its blog post about the new apps that its goal was never to keep people online, but to inspire them to go off-line and do things they like.

The company says it’s now making it easier for users to take their aspirations with them when they do things away from the computer by offering new and updated apps for the most common mobile devices out there. The Android app is available for download right now at Apps.pinterest.com. The app promises to make it simple and fast to pin things to your account.

Pinterest says that the app was specifically designed and developed to work well on Android smartphones and tablets with no matter how fast the device is or the size of the screen. Pinterest thinks that its new iPad app may be the best experience for the service yet. It allows the user to discover, save, and organize the things they like.

Pinterest says that iPhone users have been asking for the ability to see more pins. The updated iPhone app brings the two-column layout allows the user to see more of their content and find what they want more quickly. The updated iOS apps should be available in the App Store. Users should still be able to access Pinterest using the mobile website as well.

Nikon rumored to make an announcement on the 22nd of August

If you’re looking forward to seeing Nikon launch several new cameras, it seems like the 22nd of August is indeed the date that you can look forward to. According to the folks at Nikon Rumors, they have “confirmed” that an announcement is expected to be made on the 22nd of this month. It is unclear as to what cameras Nikon will be announcing, but Nikon Rumors believes that only the Coolpix series of cameras will be revealed. This means that if you were looking forward to the rumored D600, you might be in for a wait.

So far the rumored Coolpix cameras expected to be unveiled includes the possible P7100 successor, the P7200 which is rumored to come with a 28-200mm f/2.4 lens. Another possible camera could also be the S800 which will be Nikon’s first camera that will be powered by Android. Assuming the 22nd of August date pans out, we can expect more than the abovementioned cameras to be announced as leaked internal codes of unannounced Nikon cameras were spotted recently. In any case we suggest taking this with a grain of salt for now and check back with us on the 22nd to see the rumors are true!

Adobe says no more Flash on Android

This week marks a significant change for Android users. Last November Adobe announced that it would stop the development of Flash for mobile devices. As of yesterday, Adobe disabled new installs of Flash on Android devices. Things aren’t looking good for Flash as a whole with support for Android over, iOS having never embraced Flash, and Microsoft offering only limited Flash support for Windows 8.

If Steve Jobs were still alive, he would probably be happy at this development. Jobs was adamantly against Flash instead pushing HTML 5 as a more open platform for powering mobile content, and more. HTML 5 can also support content on the desktop and other platforms making it a cross-platform option.

Adobe tried to move forward with the Open Screen Project as a way to get Flash on more platforms, but that plan was not successful. With no more support for Android, Flash now lacks access to roughly 85% of the smartphone market. Combine that with the fact that iOS holds a huge chunk of the remaining market, and it’s clear Adobe has thrown in the towel.

Adobe will continue to support Flash on PCs where it has become very common and ubiquitous. The company says it will focus on gaming and premium video. I have to wonder how much longer Flash on computers can hold out before it succumbs to HTML 5.

LG sells five million LTE smartphones worldwide

Everyone may be scrambling to get their hands on Samsung’s Galaxy S III or lusting after the HTC One X, but LG has poked its head up just to let everyone know it sells smartphones too. The company has announced that it’s managed to sell five million LTE handsets across the world. One million of those were sold in the month of July alone, with LG citing strong LTE markets like South Korea, Japan, and the United States.

LG says that by far the most popular LTE handset is the Optimus LTE, managing to amass two million devices sold. The Optimus LTE II, meanwhile, became one of the fastest selling LTE phones, reportedly selling 500,000 units in its first 70 days of life. As for the quirky Optimus Vu, LG says that its managed to shift 500,000 since its release in South Korea in March. The handset will be making its way to the United States shortly on Verizon, so we’ll have to see how receptive an American audience is to the device.

The company is planning a variant of the Optimus LTE II in the United States on Verizon’s network, the VS930. Pictures emerged of the handset last month, showing off a fairly basic design, with reports indicating the handset will feature a 4.7-inch IPS display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, NFC support, and LTE connectivity as well as world roaming capabilities.

A leaked service manual for the phone indicated that Ice Cream Sandwich will be onboard out of the box, and the handset will pack a 2,150mAh battery. The release date for the handset was tipped for July 13th, but the date came and went without any form of an announcement. No doubt Verizon will reveal it in due course, and we’ll let you know when the company does.

Mad Catz STRIKE 7 gaming keyboard announced at Gamescom handson

In the hubbub of a late evening soiree in the center of Cologne, Mad Catz unveiled its new gaming keyboard. While the S.T.R.I.K.E. 7 keyboard is certainly punctuation-rich, it’s aiming to match all those periods with just as many functions and permutations. The keyboard has a modular design, including a new touchscreen interface offering up some new swipe and gesture controls across both gaming titles and day-to-day PC use. Mad Catz reckons it’s the final piece in their gaming range puzzle, complementing both the aforementioned R.A.T. mice and its F.R.E.Q gaming headsets. We take a closer look — and throw in the suitably bombastic promo video — after the break.

Sky+ iPad app update brings remote control and DVR scheduling

Sky iPad app update brings remote control and DVR scheduling

After being teased earlier in the year, v4.0 of the Sky+ app for iPad has arrived in the UK and brought a number of new features to subscriber’s tablets. Now, it can be used as a remote control to change channels or select DVR functions, as well as view scheduled recordings and add to or change them, or just browse the TV guide’s new look. Even with the changes however, Sky has more planned for later this summer when it will integrate zeebox technology to bring second screen features and data to accompany live TV. The free app is up in iTunes now, however customers will need the latest HD guide upgrade on their cable box that’s connected to the same local network as the iPad to make it all work. There’s a quick demo video of the new features embedded after the break plus more official information on the Sky website.
