Black Galaxy S III shown on T-Mo website: glossy and shady in equal measure

Black Galaxy S III shown on TMo website glossy and shady in equal measure

It’s that mythical third color again — or maybe the fourth, if you happen to be with a particular carrier. We saw hints of a darker shade of the Galaxy S III in Germany back in June, but even then we weren’t totally convinced of its pedigree. More recently there have been rumors of a black Galaxy S III coming to independent retailers in the UK, but with nothing formal to back them up. So, now we have this: an animation of a very black and very glossy flagship, rotating on a lofty pedestal over at T-Mo’s official US site. Can we finally relax and say it exists for sure, or did T-Mo perhaps paint it to make their site look more uniform? More to the point, would anyone hold out for this rather than snap up the ever-popular white variant right now?

Google Patents search gets upgrade, now filled with prior art and European patent goodness

Google Patents search gets upgrade, now filled with prior art and European patent goodness

The legal tussles between Apple and Samsung have previously placed a spotlight on stuff like 2001: A Space Odyssey by way of prior art. Now Google’s patent search is giving prior art some love as well with the addition of the aptly named “Prior Art Finder” to its patent search tool. Marked by a patently obvious blue button, the new addition serves up relevant prior art results by using key phrases from a patent’s text and putting them together in a search query. Besides drawing from Google Patents, the finder displays results from Google Scholar, Google Books and the web’s other nooks and crannies. The recent improvement also adds some Euro flavor to Google’s patent search by including submissions to the European Patent Office. The addition should work well with an update to Google Translate earlier this year that added parallel patent texts from the aforementioned European agency to allow for translations between English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German and Swedish. As always, folks can check the source link for the full details.

LG sells five million LTE smartphones, plans ‘second to none’ lineup soon and girds for patent battles

LG five million LTE smartphones, plans 'second to none' lineup soon and girds for patent battles

While LG’s dollars and cents return on its cellphones have been up and down this year, the company just announced that since starting the LTE trend with the Revolution in May 2011 it’s sold five million high-speed data connected handsets and has no plans to slow down. The counter ticked over three million back in May, four million in June and, according to LG, sales continued at a pace of one phone every two and a half seconds. That includes two million Optimus LTEs, over 500,000 Optimus Vus and about the same number of Optimus LTE IIs in the first 70 days alone. Now the Korean company is preparing to take its Optimus Vu phablet global, and CEO Dr. Jon-seok Park says its LTE phones in the next few months will be “second to none.” Finally, there’s a note about LG having the “largest overall” total number of patents, claimed to be worth $8 billion, which is possibly intended to ward off the kind of patent trouble currently chasing Samsung.

LG Optimus 2X confirmed for Ice Cream Sandwich in South Korea

Yesterday, we brought you news that the LG Optimus 2X which had suffered its fair share of uncertainty where the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system upgrade was concerned, might just be released for the smartphone after all, but there was every possibility of the message being lost in translation. Well, LG’s Korean branch did tweet to confirm that Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is indeed coming your way to the LG Optimus 2X, although in the same tweet, it was mentioned that “for now, that tweet only refers to Korean availability.”

This means those living outside of South Korea would be out of luck this time around, at least until there is further confirmation as to whether there will be such an update making its way internationally across all the remaining five continents.

Adobe stops Flash development for Android

A couple of months ago, we learnt that Flash support for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean would be non-existent – and here we are with word that Adobe will finally stop development for Flash on mobile devices, in particular, those running on the Android operating system after realizing that HTML5 is the new vehicle for mobile devices as well as desktops alike to enjoy a richer, more interactive user experience. I guess Adobe made good on their promise to pull the plug on Adobe Flash for Android when August 15th rolled around, didn’t they? From tomorrow onwards, Adobe will block new installs of Flash on Android, and it will still take some time, I believe for many of us to come to terms to considering how Flash once held such a commanding lead in the past. I guess without the right kind of strategy, they failed to move the entire standard forward in the right direction, and it is up to HTML5 to carry the torch now.

Solar-powered toilet receives money from Bill Gates’ foundation

There is nothing quite like a solar-powered toilet now, is there, considering how we have other modes of transportation that run off solar energy? After all, this is the future of the developing world that is envisioned by none other than the software mogul of Windows himself, Bill Gates. The Bill Gates Foundation had just given a $100,000 prize to the California Institute of Technology on Tuesday in order to encourage and further develop their work on a self-contained, sun-powered system which is capable of recycling water while breaking down human waste into storable energy. 1.0.4 Legendary Item Improvements in Diablo 3

So, are you looking forward to the Diablo 3 1.0.4 patch update? If you have answered in the affirmative, then you might be pleased to learn that there are changes made to the range of Legendary Items in the game with patch 1.0.4 as well. Most folks are not too happy with what Blizzard has done to Legendary items in Diablo 3, where they were basically Rare items with plenty of flavor text. Now, things are about to change with the 1.0.4 patch, as the Legendary Items are now given a sense of being “unique” – and Blizzard gets the ball rolling by introducing custom effects to more than 50 of them. Diablo 3 Starter Edition is free-to-play for everyone

They say that there is no free lunch in this world, and the saying holds true. However, no one said anything about a free-to-play version of Diablo 3 – coming in the form of the Diablo 3 Starter Edition. This is not the complete game, but rather, a limited version of Diablo 3 which will see your character fight his or her way through to level 13 while facing off with the Skeleton King boss in Act I. This particular edition was restricted to those who were waiting (patiently, I might add) for credit card purchases to be processed, or had recently received a guest pass from a friend. (more…)

iOS 6 and new iPhone plays your favorite song as an alarm

Hmmm, now this is something interesting that I never really noticed before – Apple is said to include the ability for iOS 6’s alarm clock application to play your favorite tune in order to help you greet a brand new day. This is a surprising and long welcome change, considering how other smartphones that do not run on the iOS platform have been able to play your favorite MP3 in order to jolt you out of bed. This particular feature first arrived in the initial beta versions of iOS 6 in June earlier this year, and will most probably be one of the most welcome features in iOS 6. (more…)
