Mutant Butterflies Found After Fukushima Nuclear Disaster In Japan (VIDEO)

Researchers in Japan say they have found evidence that radiation from the March 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident has caused the mutation of dozens of butterflies.

Features such as stunted wings, irregularly developed eyes, disfigured antennas and different color patterns found in butterflies from irradiated regions have led scientists to say they have found evidence to suggest a link between the genetic mutations and the radioactive material that was leaked into the environment last year.

“We conclude that artificial radionuclides from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant caused physiological and genetic damage to this species,” said the researchers’ report, which was recently published in the journal Scientific Reports.

You’ve tried all sorts of cocktails and added all kinds of fruits, vegetables and tiny umbrellas to your drink. Why not add a shot of technology to the mix? LiteCubes are freezable nontoxic plastic 1″ blocks that light up. This has to be a rave party staple.

litecubes led ice cube

Each LiteCube contains an FDA-approved freezable gel. You can use LiteCubes to keep your drinks cool without watering them down. But the star in each cube is the LED. LiteCubes come in single or multicolored variants. You can set the light to glow steadily, flash slowly or at a seizure-inducing pace. You can also turn the LED off, which you should do after ever party. The lithium battery inside is not user-replaceable and is only guaranteed to last up to 12 hours.

You can order LiteCubes from a variety of places. Amazon has a 9-block sampler pack for about $19 (USD), but you can also order from OnlyCubes for $1.45-$1.65 per block or DirectGlow for discounted wholesale purchases.

Outlook.com hits 10 million users in just two weeks, gives webmail a kickstart

Outlook.com attachment demo

E-mail isn’t typically known for generating the kind of rabid adoption that you see with, say, smartphones. Microsoft, then, may have some room to brag when Outlook.com produces similar numbers. Tucked in amidst news of the finished SkyDrive app remake is word that the new webmail service already has 10 million members in its first two weeks of action. That’s fast when you put it in the context of Gmail’s slow but steady growth, although the boasting doesn’t tell the whole story. As many with Hotmail spam addresses can attest, there’s a difference between signing up and becoming an active user. We wouldn’t be shocked if some of that 10 million was part of an early gold rush for the best names — no one wants to be stuck with janesmith197904, after all.

Fisker investigates second Karma auto fire

This week the folks behind the Fisker Karma electric car have begun investigating the second auto fire since the launch of the next-generation vehicle. The incident occurred on Saturday in Woodside California for yet-unknown reasons, but Fisker has made it clear that they know it was neither “the lithium-ion battery pack, new technology components nor unique exhaust routing.” No injuries were recorded and no deaths occurred, and the statement from Fisker lends a small amount of information to the case as it stands now.

The first incident with this vehicle line occurred earlier this year in Sugar Land, Texas. The Texas fire is still part of a US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation now, and no cause has yet been determined. This vehicle has also been part of two manufacturer recalls thus far in its short lifespan. The statement released today from Fisker read as follows:

“The area of origin for the fire was determined to be outside the engine compartment. There was no damage to the passenger compartment and there were no injuries.” – Fisker

This plug-in hybrid vehicle works with 50 miles to the battery before it needs to switch to a normal gasoline engine. There are just about 1,000 of these vehicles out on the streets at this very moment, with no less than a $103,000 USD price tag attached to each. Have a peek at the timeline below to see the short history of this vehicle and its exploits galore.

Killzone: Mercenary announced as Vita exclusive at Gamescom

Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified isn’t the only console spin-off that will be exclusive to the PS Vita, as Sony‘s Gamescom press conference also treated us to the announcement of Killzone: Mercenary. Like most spin-offs, Killzone: Mercenary will be quite a bit different from the core Killzone franchise, as this time around you’ll be playing as – surprise! – a mercenary working with both the Helghast and the ISA. This marks the first time in Killzone history that you’ll be working alongside the Helghast (at least sometimes), so get excited Vita owners.

The game was announced with the short trailer you see posted below. Half live action and half gameplay, the trailer gives us our first look at Killzone: Mercenary on the PS Vita. The graphics actually look excellent (especially for a handheld game), but that’s because the folks at Guerrilla Games are working on this entry as well. That’s right, the development duties haven’t been handed off for this particular spin-off, so we don’t have to worry about an unknown studio making a sub-par game in the Killzone franchise.

Not only that, but Mercenary is being made with the Killzone 3 engine, which is why the visuals look so good. With Guerrilla Games developing the title and using the Killzone 3 engine to do so, this might just turn out to be the high-profile, console-quality game the PS Vita needs. Check out the announcement trailer below.

Killzone: Mercenary is scheduled to launch at some point next year, but other than that, details are still pretty scarce. Sony promises that more details will be shared soon, so hopefully it won’t be too much longer before more information arrives. Keep it tuned to SlashGear for more details on Killzone: Mercenary!
