Fisker Karma hybrid burnt to a crisp as owner goes grocery shopping

Expensive exotic cars that catch fire by themselves? It is almost as strange as some cases in the past where spontaneous human combustion occurred. Well, it seems that the latest mysterious case of an expensive sports car burning itself to a crisp while the owner is not around would fall under the purview of the Fisker Karma hybrid-electric luxury sedan. Jalopnik has managed to snag an exclusive scoop on this story, where the cause of the fire is remains unknown, although photos from Jalopnik do reveal some rather extensive damage to the front left quadrant of the car.

This particularly ‘hot’ incident happened in Woodside, California, and surprisingly enough, it is not the first time this has happened to a Fisker – but rather, this is deemed to be the second fire accident over the course of this summer, where earlier in May this year, a spanking new Fisker was actually the cause of a house fire in Houston, Texas. The Woodside Fire Department claimed that the Fisker Karma’s owner paid a visit to a grocery store, only to be greeted by smoke coming out from his ride upon his return. Calling Fisker, the owner was told to dial 911 – obviously without using his butt.

The fire crew did not arrive in time to save the Fisker Karma, but at least no one was hurt in the tragedy. I wonder how many steps backwards has Fisker slid in terms of their public image with this latest incident.

‘Flip Men’: Hoarded House Explodes With Team Inside (VIDEO)

It was a wild ride of the unexpected on “Flip Men” (Sun., 10 p.m. ET on Spike), and another example of how well a mental disorder can be hidden. Mike and Doug thought they had a steal when they shelled out $67,000 for a home that looked great on the outside.

What that view didn’t reveal was that the interior was packed floor-to-ceiling with stuff. They’d accidentally picked up a hoarder’s home, and all the stuff was still there. That meant a much more massive clean-up than they could have anticipated just to get the house cleaned out.

It proved to be only the first surprise of the project. After they’d gotten the hoard removed, they were working in the house when an explosion rocked them and the camera crew. Upon inspection, the water heater had exploded.

Motorola DROID RAZR HD and Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX HD gets October release?

Word on the street has it that Motorola will be releasing a couple of new smartphones to the market this coming October – we are talking about the Motorola DROID RAZR HD and Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX HD, of course. This is definitely an interesting bit of news for those who are on the lookout for a new phone, as there are are whispers of the Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX HD that carries a massive 3,300mAh battery being a massive sales hit for Verizon Wireless during the second quarter of this year as it allegedly outsold the iPhone 4S by a considerable margin during the mentioned time period.

There is a FCC filing for the Motorola DROID RAZR HD that alleges a 2530mAh battery, while the Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX HD, which should have similar specifications as with the DROID RAZR HD save for a more generous battery, might just come with a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor and Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich running right out of the box. Have you started saving up for one of these handsets already?

iOS 6 beta has ‘Wi-Fi plus Cellular’ setting?

Right now, Apple claims that iOS 5 is the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, and I do not suppose that the majority of you out there do agree to such a statement – where most of you would be toting an iOS-powered device, of course. Well, it does seem that iOS 6 is going to rock with the latest word on its ‘Wi-Fi plus Cellular’ setting found in the latest iOS 6 beta. Assuming there is a weak Wi-Fi signal which prevents you from running certain apps on an iOS 6-powered device, you might need to make the necessary change to rely on cellular connectivity – but not so with the latest beta release of iOS 6, where there is an option under settings in the General/Cellular control panel, allowing you to choose ‘Wi-Fi Plus Cellular’.

The whole idea behind this option is to let the device switch to cellular connectivity automatically whenever it detects a weak Wi-Fi signal in the vicinity. It remains to be seen whether this feature will be retained for the final polished version of iOS 6, or will it remain in developer’s land only for the time being.

Gamera 2 sets new unofficial human-powered helicopter flight record

The Gamera 2 has just entered the record books by setting a new unofficial human-powered helicopter flight record, thanks to Kyle Gluesenkamp from the A. James Clark School of Engineering’s Gamera 2 team sometime at the end of June. This particular record was recently ratified by the National Aeronautic Association (NAA), and it has also been forwarded over to the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale in order to gain approval for it to be an official new world record. The new official national record stands at 49.9 seconds, so kudos to the entire crew over at the University of Maryland who were involved in this particular project. (more…)

Samsung refreshing Series 7 Gamer with 3D display, AMD Radeon HD 7870M

Samsung refreshing Series 7 Gamer with 3D display, AMD GPU, yellow hue

If Samsung’s first dedicated gaming laptop wasn’t built to your liking, you’re about to get another option — the Series 7 Gamer is due for a refresh. The company’s Samsung Tomorrow blog pegs the new build as the Series 7 Gamer Yellow 3D, which outshines the subtle design we praised in our review of the last model with — you guessed it — a bright yellow finish. Style aside, the new oversized notebook will swap out its current GPU for an AMD Radeon HD 7870M and, as the name implies, a 14.3-inch SuperBright (400 nit) 3D LED display. The new configuration will also split its twin drive bays between a 1TB HDD and a fast-booting 128GB SSD. There’s no word yet on international availability, but folks in Sammy’s homeland can pick up the rig on August 14th for 2.99 million Won, which rings up to about $2,643 here in the states. Check out the official announcement at the (translated) source link below.

Sony Xperia TX is new flagship model from Sony Mobile

What is in a name? Plenty, apparently, and it does seem as though the upcoming flagship model from Sony Mobile would be known as the Sony Xperia TX, which is definitely far more commercial friendly, not to mention easier to roll off the tongue compared to Sony LT29i Hayabusa, don’t you think so? Apart from that, it does seem to lend the impression that the Sony Xperia TX is going to ‘terminate’ the rest of the competition. Word on the street has it that the Sony Xperia TX will be officially introduced at a special pre-IFA event this coming August 29th, so do keep your eyes peeled for additional news on that day. "60 Minutes" Unemployment Report: Long-Term Joblessness A Major Hurdle For America’s Labor Force

As the general election ramps up (promising a struggle over the future of the social safety net), millions of Americans remain out of work. The unemployment rate has hovered around 8 percent throughout 2012, and a 5.2 million people have been out of work for more than 27 weeks.

The financial burden of long-term joblessness can be crippling, especially for those who’ve exhausted their 99 weeks of federally guaranteed unemployment insurance. And, for many, prospects look bleak for the foreseeable future, as many employers have no interest in applicants–even those with college educations and years of experience–if they have gaps in their resume.

It was against this backdrop that “60 Minutes” and Scott Pelley took a look Sunday evening at the millions of long-term unemployed Americans

Demonoid domains up for sale

There was quite a bit of news bytes floating around recently concerning popular BitTorrent site Demonoid which was recently shut down, as the authorities cited that to be a gift to the US. Well, it seems that more developments have happened since then, where a trio of Demonoid domains have gone up for sale, just a couple of weeks after it was taken down in a coordinated, concerted effort. The site is based in Ukraine, and a trio of its domains – demonoid.me, demonoid.com, and demonoid.ph, can now be purchased on domain marketplace Sedo. (more…)

Samsung Exynos 5 announced

Samsung recently announced the long awaited Exynos 5 SoC (read more about SoCs and what they are all about in our primer here), which might just help usher in the next generation of mobile computing upon the masses. There were some demonstrations performed with the Samsung Exynos 5 in the past, and at long last, it has received an official announcement by the South Korean conglomerate. You can expect the Samsung Exynos 5 to feature a dual-core 1.7 Ghz Cortex A15 CPU, a Mali T604 GPU, Wi-Fi display support, 12.8 GB/s memory bandwidth with 2 port 800 MHz LPDDR3 RAM support, 1080p 60 FPS video performance and VP8 codec decoder, in addition to USB 3.0 support, now how about that?

The Mali T604 GPU is no pushover either, where it is capable of handling resolutions of up to WQXGA (2,560 X 1,600 – take that, Retina Display!), handle stereoscopic 3D with aplomb, deliver OpenGL ES 3.0, OpenCL 1.1 and DirectX 11 support in the process.
