Silent Falcon solar-powered UAV gets launched

Silent Falcon UAS Technologies officially announced the Silent Falcon solar electric unmanned aerial system (UAS) at the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) conference in Las Vegas early this week. Silent Falcon is the result of the company’s collaboration with Bye Aerospace to build a small tactical UAS that’s portable for long-range intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. The Silent Falcon uses thin film photo voltaic (TFPV) solar energy collection and lithium polymer batteries for energy storage, providing long-range flight endurance of up to 14 hours.

During night time, however, the solar-powered UAV can only fly up to six hours running on battery power. The Silent Falcon has a top speed of 112 km/h with an operational flying altitude from 100 feet. Other notable features include an electro-optical, infrared and laser pointer sensor, a silent and highly efficient propulsion system, a lightweight carbon fiber composite structure, and three interchangeable wing sizes to easily adapt to mission endurance requirements. The Silent Falcon is still in its preproduction phase, but the company says that it will be entering production sometime next year.

Apple reveals 2010 presentation to Samsung on Android patent infringement, licensing offer

As the battle between Samsung and Apple closed out another week in US District Court, lawyers for the latter focused its argument on evidence and testimony covering a presentation Apple made to Samsung in 2010, and its offer to license the patents. AllThingsD has the deck of slides from the meeting (embedded after the break), specifying areas and specific patents Apple believes Android as an OS infringes or things Samsung specifically copied elements from, plus a report on testimony from Apple executive Boris Teksler. He testified today about the meeting with Samsung, calling it a “trusted partner” (should be, since Apple paid it paid $5.7 billion for parts that year) that both Tim Cook and Steve Jobs spoke to directly about the issue.

While more information is expected from Teksler next week, he did have time to put a dollar amount on the licensing deal Apple subsequently offered, at about $30 per smartphone and $40 per tablet, as well as royalties also collected from phones running Symbian and Bada, with the possibility of a 20 percent discount if Samsung would cross license its own technology back to Apple. The companies are restricted by Judge Koh to 25 hours each to argue their points (Apple is at 11 and a half hours while Samsung has crossed over 12 with its own arguments yet to come) but we’re sure there’s enough time left for a few more revelations before any resolution is reached.

Lego motorized Tumbler and The Bat vehicles will bring out the Batman in you

Lego builder Peer Kreuger was able to build Lego models of the highly fantasized vehicles from The Dark Knight Rises hit movie. But they are not just your ordinary Lego blocks. That’s because Kreuger was able do motorized versions of the Tumbler as well as of The Bat (well, not totally). Basically, Kreuger’s Tumbler, available in black and brown, have LED lights on them and boy they look amazing.

The Bat on the other hand, seen in the flick as Batman’s favorite ride, is still motorized but doesn’t have the ability to fly. Kreuger has posted images of his latest creations on Lego’s official custom builder website Cuusoo, so that you can vote for the two toy concepts and help make the, a reality for you boys out there. He was also able to prepare a cool and almost-realistic video of the Tumblers and The Bat in action. I got to admit that they pretty much look like the ones used by Bruce Wayne in the movie. Do you agree? Check out the video after the break. (more…)

Huma Abedin Praised By President Obama As ‘American Patriot’ At Ramadan Dinner

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama celebrated religious diversity at his fourth annual Ramadan Iftar dinner on Friday evening, mourning the victims of the recent Sikh temple shooting in Wisconsin and fully backing State Department official Huma Abedin, who has had her allegiances called into question by conservative lawmakers.

“Of all the freedoms we cherish as Americans, of all the rights that we hold sacred, foremost among them is freedom of religion, the right to worship as we choose,” Obama said at the dinner, held in the East Room of the White House. “It’s enshrined in the First Amendment of our Constitution — the law of the land, always and forever. It beats in our heart — in the soul of the people who know that our liberty and our equality is endowed by our creator.”

Obama highlighted several Muslim American women who, he said, enrich America. One women he highlighted was Abedin, one of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s top aides.

Evade features a new body style and design that includes new headlights and taillights, slimmed down fender flares, a hood scoop, a redesigned grille and a wider backdoor. The company said that the SUV will be built on a Ford F550 Super Duty Chassis and that its unarmored skin will be made from an aluminum-mild steel blend which is reportedly lighter than that of the Knight XV. Conquest did not reveal the specific engine but said that the 4×4 SUV will either use a gasoline or diesel engine. You can learn more about it here.

Other notable features of Evade will be an air ride suspension, front and rear FLIR night vision cameras, and roof-mounted, joystick-controlled searchlights with 360 degrees of motion. Conquest Vehicles said that Evade will retail for US $579,000 and will be heading soon to production this coming fall. “We wanted EVADE to set a new standard for our company in terms of pushing the boundaries from engineering to design to incorporating new user experiences without compromising the integrity of some of the key highlight design features offered by our armored Knight XV. The result speaks for itself in terms of the final product and we couldn’t be happier,” said William Maizlin, President of Conquest Vehicles. (more…)
