Then And Now: Wilma Hurskainen Revisits Childhood Tourist Snapshots With Her Sisters In ‘Growth’ (PHOTOS)

Between the cheesy souvenir T-shirts and bad sunburns, most of us would not like to revisit our childhood vacations. But that is exactly what Finnish photographer Wilma Hurskainen set out to do in her “Growth” collection. Hurskainen recruited her three sisters and returned to the exact spots she visited with her parents as children. We can’t stop looking at these time-traveling tourist shots, which we originally spotted on My Modern Metropolis.

The photos are recreated with startling accuracy, as the Scandinavian sisters channel their old fashion senses and perfectly mimic their former facial expressions. Yet aside from being a nostalgic throwback series, “Growth” addresses the bittersweet experience of revisiting an old photograph. Although the places and poses are the same, Hurskainen can never truly recreate the original photographs. On her website the artist explains: “By repeating a distant moment something weird is revealed about us as objects of the photograph in the first pictures: the way we play our artificial roles for the photograph. We might not be more than five years old, but we already know exactly how to be in/for a photograph.”

Eurocom intros powerhouse Scorpius laptop, touts more video memory than most desktops

Eurocom intros powerhouse Scorpius laptop, touts more video memory than most desktops

Eurocom has carved out a strange but soft spot in our hearts for its desktop replacement-level laptops — the insistence on overkill hardware leaves even the vaguely ultraportable Monster packing the kind of power reserved for larger-screened (if also much thinner) counterparts. Nowhere is that too-much-is-never-enough attitude truer than in the just-launched, 17.3-inch Scorpius. While supporting up to 32GB of RAM isn’t unique anymore, the Scorpius can optionally carry two of NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 680M graphics chips with the full 4GB of video RAM per piece. That’s more graphics memory than the total system memory of some entire PCs, folks. Eurocom can optionally slot in two of AMD’s Radeon HD 7970M or step down to a single graphics core, and the usual bevy of processor and storage choices culminates in as much as a quad 2.9GHz Core i7 and four drives. The lowest price that will net a fully functioning Scorpius is $1,793, although we’ll admit that it’s very tempting to pick that dual 680M option and come out with a $2,857 bill — not to mention some serious bragging rights with the gamer crowd.

You Won’t Believe What This GoPro Camera Captured Underwater [Video]

You’re going to watch this video and your jaw will drop. In fact, you’ll probably think it’s fake. Or CGI, at least. But nope, it’s completely real. A group of guys went fishing and dropped a GoPro Hero 2 camera inside a custom-made torpedo to record the ocean underneath them. What the camera recorded was the most amazing footage of dolphins you’ll ever see. More »

Zynga reportedly handed out stock to keep workers from leaving

Things haven’t been looking good for Zynga lately. Not only has its stock dropped by a pretty large amount since it went public in December, but it’s apparently had to offer incentives to keep its employees from leaving. Bloomberg reports that the company was forced to hand out stock to prevent what analyst Arvind Bhatia calls a “mass exodus,” which certainly makes things seem dire for the social games giant.

The company apparently had to take such measures after it issued its quarterly report on July 25, which as you may remember, wasn’t so great. According to the Bloomberg report, all full-time employees were given stock options, and even though the company likes to hand out equity bonuses to employees at the end of financial quarters, this was the first time all of Zynga’s employees had access to them.

Will that stock be enough to get these employees to stick around? That’s difficult to say, especially now that Zynga’s stock is sitting below $3 per share. If Zynga can manage to turn its fortunes around, having access to equity in the company will turn out great for those employees, but if the stock price continues to dwindle, employees won’t have much incentive to hang around.

Zynga has been hit hard a lot lately. It’s currently under investigation for a questionable stock sell-off, Electronic Arts is taking it to court over the similarities between The Ville and The Sims Social, and the company just lost its COO after stripping him of his duties. All of this while investors continue to lose faith in the company. Zynga is in pretty rough shape at the moment, and it seems that its worries are only beginning. Stay tuned.
