Microsoft rebrands yet again with “Modern UI Style”

Yesterday we heard word that Microsoft was ditching the Metro branding for UI design and elements within Windows 8, replacing it instead with “Windows 8 design.” It looks like the company might still be at odds as to the final naming decision, with Microsoft employees reportedly using the term “Modern UI design” in reference to Windows 8 apps and design language.

Several upcoming Microsoft events relating to Windows 8 and Bing maps reference “modern UI design” and “modern UI style” instead of Metro or Windows 8 design. The move is sure to confuse consumers and developers alike, and we’re curious as to why Microsoft hasn’t simply come out on the issue and finalized the correct terminology.

Whatever branding Microsoft arrivesat will extend to Windows Phone 8 as well, as the mobile operating system shares the same design language as the full blown desktop operating system. The company reportedly moved away from the Metro branding due to potential legal troubles. A German company by the name of Metro AG apparently took issue with Microsoft’s use of the Metro terminology, prompting the company to change the branding internally.

Lenovo recently updated its own marketing materials to reflect the change, with an image for its recently announced ThinkPad Tablet 2 referencing “desktop and Windows 8 apps” instead of Metro apps. Microsoft hasn’t officially commented on any of the changes just yet, but with the launch of Windows 8 in October drawing closer, the issue will most likely be put to rest sooner rather than later.

Huawei MediaPad 10 FHD spills the beans (and its guts) at the FCC

Huawei MediaPad 10 FHD spills the beans at the FCC

There isn’t much we don’t already know about Huawei’s 10-inch MediaPad FHD, revealing most of its secrets well before its launch later this month. Now that it’s swung through Washington to be poked and prodded by the screwdriver-clutching mavens at the FCC, we know that the US Government thinks it’s safe for human consumption. The slate’s impressed even the surliest of our staffers when we played with it, making us deeply excited for its arrival in stores. Those interested in seeing what lies beneath that glass-and-aluminum surface should check out the autopsy gallery we’ve got for you below.

UDIRC RC Quadcopter Won’t Chop Much off Your Budget

Drones are a hot piece of tech these days, whether you’re a kid or an armed force. Rich kids and rich armed forces, that is: for instance, the popular Parrot AR.Drones sell for $250 to $300 (USD). Lucky for us, Brando stopped being weird for a second and got a hold of a cheap alternative.

udirc remote control quadcopter

Brando describes the UDIRC remote control multicopter as follows: “The Perfect Flying Object with this New Design Technology, The Most Stable (like the real?) Floating in the AIR. The Special Design of the One Press Button, which can make the UFO to Somersault in the Air. This RC UFO is powered by a Small piece Battery that is fueled with the USB External Dual Charging Box; therefore, UFO can Fly Never Stop with this Unlimited Power Supply!” Yeah. Still weird.

udirc remote control quadcopter 5 150x150
udirc remote control quadcopter 6 150x150

Because it doesn’t have a camera, fancy smartphone controls or good looks, the multicopter’s price is the good kind of weird: Brando is selling it for just $50(USD). That’s a steal for a quadcopter, but for a quadcopter with unlimited power supply? It’s the heist of the century.

Scientists release biggest ever 3D map of the universe, lacks turn-by-turn navigation (video)

Astronomers release biggest ever threedimensional map of the sky, lacks turnbyturn navigation

The stargazers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics have released a huge three-dimensional map of outer space, a core part of its six-year survey of the skies. Encompassing four billion light-years cubed, the researchers hope to use the map to retrace the movements of the universe through the last six billion years. Using the latest Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-III), the center says the data will help improve their estimates for the quantity of dark matter in space and the effect that dark energy has on the universe’s expansion, “two of the greatest mysteries of our time” — if you’re an astrophysicist. Even if you’re not, you’ll still want to board the animated flight through over 400,000 charted galaxies — it’s embedded after the break.

HTC Reaffirms Android 4.0 Updates Are Coming This Month

htc-logo

HTC smartphone owners, take note. Your Ice Cream Sandwich update is coming this month says HTC on its Facebook page. The company previously released a laundry list detailing the ICS roll-out schedule but failed to meet many of its own target dates. But HTC is now stating all the devices on that list will get Android 4.0 by the end of this month.

If HTC follows through with this plan, Android 4.0 should hit devices like the Droid Incredible 2, Thunderbolt, Rhyme and Desire S. This is especially good news for the latter two, which HTC previously stated would have ICS by the end of July.

Relative to iOS updates, major Android revisions are slow to hit devices. This is for various reasons, too. OEMs and carriers often put the updates through rigorous testing, and furthermore, they have to support a huge number of devices. A Google report released earlier this month notes that 16% of Android devices are now running Android 4.0, up from 10.9% in July. But Gingerbread, released in 2010, is still the dominate Android version and currently powers 60% of the devices on the market.

On Second Thought: Microsoft Is Calling Metro "Modern UI Style" Now [Microsoft]

Off The Hook Shower Head

If you are one who loves to be different, then surely it would reflect in your sense of fashion, not to mention decorative taste back home in terms of furniture and household accessories. Well, the bathroom is slightly trickier to furnish, although to come up with a tastefully done design is not too difficult. Here is something that you might want to consider if you love to stand out from the rest of the mundane crowd – the Off The Hook Shower Head.

Yes, the name of this household accessory itself gives the game away. With the Off The Hook Shower Head, it looks like a standard issue house phone receiver, except that on one end of it lies a universal shower fitting instead of that tangled cord which land lines are famous for. You can start to carry out imaginary conversations with yourself, and perhaps practice venting your frustrations on your boss by speaking, nay, screaming into it – while the tap is turned off, of course. We would not want the police to come breaking down on your bathroom door just because you drowned yourself by accident, do we?
