Digia buys Nokia’s remaining Qt assets for ‘fraction’ of purchase price, eyes Windows, iOS, Android

Digia buys Nokia's remaining Qt assets for a 'fraction' of the purchase price, eyes Windows, iOS, AndroidNokia’s Qt project could be reinvigorated now that it’s been bought out in its entirety by Finnish firm Digia, following a partial acquisition last year. Digia is eyeing porting the development platform, used to code applications for Symbian and Meego, to Windows 8 (the PR doesn’t mention Windows Phone 8), Android and iOS in the near future. While a fee hasn’t been mentioned, it’s reportedly a “fraction” of the $150 million that Nokia originally paid when purchasing Trolltech in 2008 — which probably won’t improve matters on the handset maker’s balance sheet.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Student Edition coming soon

Everyone is scrambling to get their hands on the cheap and cheerful Nexus 7, starting at $199 for the 8GB model, but Samsung might be looking to entice customers with its own affordable wares in the near future. A tipster has sent in a picture to Engadget showing off a student edition of the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. It’s the same tablet that the company already sells, but Samsung will be throwing in a keyboard and USB adapter as part of the $249 package.

The new student edition bundle will reportedly go on sale on August 19th at Best Buy. Details of the tablet are otherwise the same, with specs including a dual-core 1Ghz processor, 1GB of RAM, a 1024×600 PLS screen, 8GB of storage, and a 3-megapixel camera. A front-facing VGA camera is also included, and those looking for more storage space can opt for microSD cards up to 64GB.

The whole shebang is also running on Ice Cream Sandwich, with work well underway on xda-developers for Jelly Bean ROMs. The tablet was only released a few short months ago as well, so we imagine Samsung will push out an update to the latest version of Android when it’s made sure everything is good to go.

The included keyboard with the student edition should help with often messy affair of typing on a tablet, and the USB adapter will allow users to plug in any additional accessories, like mice or flash drives. It’s certainly not a bad deal for $249, so pop into Best Buy on August 19th if this student edition sounds like a solid purchase.

US Army's LEMV spy blimp spotted hovering over New Jersey, may take up cargo duties video

The US Army’s not-so-secret Long Endurance Multi-Intelligence Vehicle (LEMV) spy blimp is better at staying hidden than we thought… if unintentionally. Although it was due to fly the friendly skies of Lakehurst, New Jersey in mid-June, Northrop Grumman’s usually unmanned surveillance was only just caught floating over the Jersey Shore as part of a maiden flight on August 8th. The conspicuous, delayed test run proved that the LEMV could take off, steer and land smoothly, and started a series of exercises that should culminate in combat trials over Afghanistan at the start of 2013. Northrop’s KC Brown Jr. tells Wired that there’s a possible (if purely coincidental) consolation for missing another deadline — the airship could be used in a pinch for carrying as much as seven tons of supplies without getting into harm’s way, albeit at a fairly glacial 30MPH. The successful first flight won’t be much consolation to Mav6, whose Blue Devil 2 was scuttled at the last minute after technical issues; it’s nonetheless a relief for US troops, who may get weeks at a time of constant intelligence on enemy movements. Catch a short snippet of the early LEMV journey after the break.

Universal Studios Hollywood Terror Tram gets invaded by The Walking Dead

I am a huge fan of The Walking Dead on AMC. I think this is one of the best shows on TV and Universal Studios Hollywood has just announced an epic new Halloween adventure that will kick off in late September. Universal Studios Hollywood has announced the “Terror Tram Invaded by The Walking Dead.” Passengers aboard the tram will get to scoot around the famous Universal Studios back lot as Walkers wander around.

The Terror Tram isn’t the only attraction besieged by Walkers. Universal Studios will also unveil an immersive maze called “The Walking Dead: Dead Inside.” The maze is based on the series and presumably, there will be Walkers rambling about inside a maze as visitor’s attempts to get out. This sounds so much better than a haunted house.

The back lot scene for Terror Tram is a rural setting with a small town that has been devastated by a horrific plane crash. The maze for the Dead Inside attraction are described as movie quality. There are other mazes include “Welcome to Silent Hill” based on the popular video game franchise and a maze by rock star Alice Cooper called “Alice Cooper Goes to Hell 3D.”

The event will also have a maze based on a Latin American legend called “La Llorona: Cazadora de Ninos.” Halloween Horror Nights starts on Friday, September 21 and goes on during select nights through Halloween. If you’re a fan of The Walking Dead, the season premiere is set for Sunday, October 14.

Battery replacement for the Retina Display MacBook Pro estimated at $500, according to iFixit

If the Retina Display on the new MacBook Pro has dazzled and blown you away, you might want to take into consideration the future. By future we mean that if you plan to keep your MacBook Pro for the next few years, it is natural that wear and tear will take place, and there is also the likelihood that the laptop’s battery life will not be what it was when you first bought it. While certain laptop manufacturers allow the battery to be removed while charging, unfortunately this is not the case for the MacBook Pro.

So if you’re wondering how much it might cost you to replace the battery, the folks at iFixit have completed their repair guide for the MacBook Pro and has estimated that it could cost you a whopping $500 to have the battery replaced. They are also working under the assumption that the “technicians follow the safer Apple-suggested procedure and replace the entire upper case assembly along with the battery.” We can’t say we’re too surprised since iFixit dubbed the MacBook Pro with Retina Display as being the “least repairable” laptop to date. $500 is indeed a lot to pay for a battery replacement so if you are still considering getting a laptop that will last you say, the next 5-6 years, then perhaps this is something worth taking into account.

These mini iPad and iPhone pins from the London Olympics are pretty cute

If you’re a fan of the novelty or the collectible, you might be interested to learn that in conjunction with the 2012 London Olympics, Apple been giving away a set of pins designed in the likeness of the iPad and iPhone on a daily basis. Only 1,000 are given out each day and they can be had at some of Apple’s retail stores located in the London area. They are given out on a first come first serve basis, so you really want these pins, you might have to go early to avoid disappointment. We have to admit that they are pretty cute and are probably the closest thing we can get to an iPad mini, at least for now until Apple announces it (if it even exists to begin with). For those who do not live in London or who did not drop by for the Olympics, don’t worry as there are enterprising sellers out there who have put these pins up for sale on eBay. They are pretty pricey for pins but we guess they might be worth something to collectors out there.

OS X Mountain Lion reportedly draining MacBook batteries faster than its predecessor

While OS X Mountain Lion might be Apple’s latest operating system at the moment, it might not really be the greatest as far as MacBook Pro users are concerned. According to a test conducted by Ars Technica, they have discovered that there might be evidence to suggest that it could be draining battery life on MacBooks faster than its predecessor, OS X Lion. Their test results have shown that they have lost about 38% of runtime after upgrading to OS X Mountain Lion. This is compared to the 8 hours they managed to achieve with Lion versus the 5 hours they got with Mountain Lion. Of course these tests can hardly be called scientific, but this is not the first report of battery drain when the operating system was launched. There is a thread on the Apple support forums where there are many reports on MacBook users complaining about how battery life has dropped considerably after installing Mountain Lion. Any OS X Mountain Lion users on MacBooks who can attest to these claims, or do you find that battery life has not differed that much from OS X Lion?

Pioneer’s new WiFi-enabled XDJ-AERO controller says goodbye wires, hello dancefloor (video)

Pioneer's new XDJAERO controller says goodbye wires, hellow dancefloor

The advent of digital DJing removed the jumps and skips of vinyl, while introducing a bad case of cable spaghetti, as spinners bring their own kit to the party. Pioneer saw that, and has finally cut them free with the new XDJ-AERO. The WiFi-enabled DJ controller lets you load up the next Moombahcore banger direct from a smartphone, tablet, laptop or PC — with support for four connected devices at once. This also means that the audience can get involved in the track selection — a la Nexus Q — but you might want to keep that fact quiet. The XDJ-AERO is designed to work with Pioneer’s own rekordbox application, but can also be use as a MIDI controller for other popular software. On the actual hardware-side of things, there’s a built-in 24-bit audio interface, two-channel mixer (which can be used standalone) plus the usual array of cue-point triggers, FX and filters we’ve come to expect. What price does the cutting of cables command? £869 (about $1,399), and the beat can begin some time later this month. Can’t wait ’til then? Drop past the break for the ridiculously cool video (and slightly less cool press release).

Netflix Just for Kids launches on Xbox 360

Parents with small children who enjoy watching Netflix on the Xbox 360 will be glad to hear that the Xbox 360 Netflix app has been given a nice new feature. Netflix has announced that the Just for Kids channel has landed on the Xbox 360. The same feature came to the PS3 back in March of 2012.

The problem with turning kids loose on Netflix without limiting them to the Just for Kids section is that some films that have inappropriate content despite having innocent sounding names. With the new Just for Kids section now available on the Xbox 360, parents can rest assured that their children can choose any streaming items in the section, and the content is safe for kids to watch.

Just as on other platforms, the Just for Kids section on Xbox 360 has rows of TV shows and movies organized in a method that is easy for kids to understand. There are genres for things such as superheroes, princesses, dinosaurs, and girl power. Our pal SpongeBob SquarePants even gets his own section as does Nickelodeon’s iCarly and others.

The channel also provides a personalized experience based on what the kids watch. That means if, for instance, your daughter watches movies about horses, more content featuring horses will be shown. With the Just for Kids section coming to the Xbox 360, it’s now available on all major consoles, PCs, Macs, Apple TV, and some smart TVs and Blu-ray players. Netflix notes that this year the Just for Kids section will come the other devices, including tablets.
