Beats to build own smartphone, targets iTunes with home-grown app and has a TV in the pipeline?
Posted in: Today's ChiliJimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre’s company, Beats, has penciled in plans for the future which will include a HTC-constructed smartphone. Since Beats is huge on music, they also want to come up with an iTunes killer, although it would be interesting to see just how that effort will pan out considering the Zune’s demise. As for the HTC-manufactured smartphone, you will not be able to find any HTC branding at all on the Android-powered device (but of course), where it will run on a custom user interface that was specially concocted for the Beats smartphone.
Not only that, Beats also looks towards the future by working on a TV launch, although the extremely low margins in the TV market would mean Beats will not embark on this adventure alone, but rather, hooking up with a manufacturer like Samsung in order to roll out a “TV with Beats connect.” The whole idea of entering the TV business was inspired by what Apple offered via their Apple TV, AirPlay and iTunes family, by extending your entertainment experience from a phone to a TV to a tablet and to a notebook.
As for the purported iTunes killer, it has been given the code name “Daisy”, but the battle against iTunes is definitely going to be a tough nut to crack, so something as soft as Daisy might not just have the fight in it to last in the long term. We would love to be wrong on this count though.

Earlier this morning, we took a gander at a couple of Windows-powered devices from Samsung, where the Samsung ATIV S which runs off the Windows Phone 8 operating system was announced. Well, the phone did not receive an official release date just then, but whispers on the street point towards an October 29th release for Windows Phone 8, at least according to Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet. Foley cited an unnamed (that is always the case, isn’t it?) source, where there was also a bunch of dates that surrounded October 29th that involved Windows Phone 8 as well as Microsoft’s marketing machine.
Four days before that, Microsoft will host a major launch event for Windows 8, Windows Phone 8 and the Microsoft Surface RT in New York City. From October 30th to November 2nd, Microsoft’s Build 2012 Conference will happen, and this is the place where software developers congregate and eat, live and breathe the future of Microsoft products, placing a heavy emphasis on Windows Phone 8. Are you looking forward to the end of October?

If you happen to own a Galaxy Nexus from Verizon, there is a pre-release of the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system update available at the moment, but you will need to do your fair bit of homework before you are able to get your Galaxy Nexus up and running with some Jelly Bean goodness. For starters, you will need to make a return to stock 4.0.4/IMM76K, followed by unlocking the device and installing a custom recovery (ClockworkMod or TWRP will do). Once done, just flash the IMM76Q package using custom recovery, followed by flashing the JRO03O update via the same route as well.
Bear in mind that this operating system update has not been certified by the folks over at Verizon Wireless, so you will need to unlock your bootloader beforehand as mentioned. As usual, it makes perfect sense to perform a backup of all your data beforehand lest something goes awry as you can never tell when Mr. Murphy is going to come knocking on your door.

TAMPA, Fla. — Seizing the campaign spotlight, vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan accepted “the calling of my generation” to help lead the country at age 42 and told roaring Republican National Convention delegates and a prime-time TV audience Wednesday night that Mitt Romney and he will make the difficult decisions needed to repair the nation’s economy.
“After four years of getting the runaround, America needs a turnaround, and the man for the job is Governor Mitt Romney,” the Wisconsin lawmaker declared in what amounted to his debut on the national stage. He spoke at a convention dogged by Tropical Storm Isaac, downgraded from a hurricane but still inflicting misery on millions along the nearby northern Gulf Coast.

Paul Ryan Address: Convention Speech Built On Demonstrably Misleading Assertions
Posted in: Today's ChiliTAMPA, Fla. — Paul Ryan pledged Wednesday that if he and his running mate Mitt Romney were elected president, they would usher in an ethic of responsibility. The Wisconsin congressman and GOP vice presidential candidate repeatedly chided President Barack Obama for blaming the jobs and housing crises on his predecessor, saying that his habit of “forever shifting blame to the last administration, is getting old. The man assumed office almost four years ago -– isn’t it about time he assumed responsibility?”
Ryan then noted that Obama, while campaigning for president, promised that a GM plant in Wisconsin would not shut down. “That plant didn’t last another year. It is locked up and empty to this day. And that’s how it is in so many towns today, where the recovery that was promised is nowhere in sight,” Ryan said.
Except Obama didn’t promise that. And the plant closed in December 2008 — while George W. Bush was president.

Nokia and JBL’s PlayUp NFC-equipped Bluetooth speaker wants to pair up with your Lumia
Posted in: Today's ChiliNokia may have partnered with Monster for its last batch of Lumia-focused audio wares, but now JBL is also in on the deal. Say hello to first product from Nokia and JBL, the successor to the Play 360 portable speaker, dubbed PlayUp. The noiseybox is packed with Bluetooth and NFC, and as for the design, it’s made to complement “current and future Lumia smartphones.” Like the Play 360, the PlayUp is a cylindrical, top-shooting speaker with physical volume controls, a large power button near the bottom and a 3.5mm jack for plugging in PMPs. The PlayUp weighs 760g and it measures in at 118 x 118 x 128mm — a fair bit chunkier that the 360 (110 x 110 x 124mm and 514g). Despite the heft, the PlayUp’s battery is rated for 10 hours of use, which is disappointingly just under half of the 360’s replaceable cell. Charging gets handled via micro-USB and — thankfully — a wall adapter is included.
Naturally, the notable change is JBL’s baked-in audio expertise. The unit can pump out a healthy 89dB of volume (aided by a bass port), which isn’t shabby, but still shy of the ear-ringing 120dB the $99 UE Mobile BoomBox can produce. There’s no word on whether tow units can pair wireless stereo like its elder, or what version of Bluetooth is packed inside, but we’ll be sure to let you know once we find out. Nokia also plans to release an app for the device to allow for remote control.
Given that Nokia has knack for consistency across its products, it’s likely that the white, black, cyan and bright yellow color choices will match up with the WP 8-loaded Lumias at their September 5th unveiling. The PlayUp will be available for €149 (about $186) before the year is out, which includes a travel pouch and a 3.5mm audio cable. In the meantime, hit the source link for more details.
