Granny Smith brings elderly roller-skating action to TegraZone for Android

If you’re a lover of ragdoll physics and tossing grandmothers down flights of stairs, you’re going to love the newest title announced for Tegra devices – Granny Smith. This game has been revealed by the same folks who brought you Sprinkle – a game Android Community had a look at several months ago, also on Tegra-toting Android smartphones and tablets. Now it’s time for some four – or eight – wheeled action down a few hills and through a few brick walls while we’re at it.

This game has Granny Smith chasing after a thief whose taken a bunch of her precious apples – and that’s no metaphor. This game has you, the granny herself, rolling around a bunch of cityscapes and farmland, offices and panes of glass after panes of glass to get where you’re going. You’ll have replay mode to make sure you see the sweetest crashes and fabulously realistic physics run by your NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor for all the fun you can handle. Have a peek at some value-added features in this Android game of madness, per the development team:

• Spectacular physics – Granny Smith uses some of the most advanced destruction physics in mobile games. Crash through crates and windows and watch the pieces fly all over!
• Dazzling visuals – Zoom through dozens of vibrant, whimsical worlds! Each level is like a fanciful, three-dimensional storybook.
• Intuitive controls – Help Granny pull off crazy moves with simple two-button controls – perfect for both tablets and phones.
• Vintage replays – Watch your best runs in retro movie style with cool camera angles and slow-motion effects!
• Power Granny up – Collect coins and equip Granny with a helmet, banana peels and baseballs. If Granny is getting old, you have two alternative characters to play with – Scruffy and Stanley!

Granny Smith comes with 36 hand crafted levels so you’ll never grow bored of smashing – and three different settings for each level are included as well. This game has been released just today to the NVIDIA TegraZone and the Google Play app store for your consumption – go grab it instantly for your Tegra 3 tablet or smartphone!

Nokia and JBL announce new portable NFC speakers for Lumia

Today Nokia announced that it has teamed up with JBL to introduce a new line of speakers meant to be paired with the Lumia. The full name of this new line is called “JBL PlayUp Portable Wireless Speaker for Nokia,” and they appear to be real attention-getters. In a post on Conversations with Nokia, the company’s Ian Delaney went through what we can expect from these PlayUp speakers, starting right off with the eye catching color and the similarities users are bound to see between these and the Play 360° speakers Nokia began offering last year.

The PlayUp speakers certainly are reminiscent of the Play 360° speaker, but we’re thinking that the color has more to do with that than anything else. As you can see in the image above, the speakers come in four colors – cyan, black, white and bright yellow. On the outside, we’ve got “specially created double-shot plastic” which makes for a more durable speaker, and though we don’t get many specifics about the speaker’s innards, Nokia says that this bad boy is capable of a maximum output of 89dB. In other words, this tiny thing (its dimensions are 118 x 118 x 128mm and it weighs 760g) can get pretty loud.

You’ve got a pretty big range when it comes to frequency response, which comes in at 85Hz – 22kHz (-6dB). Users can connect their phones through Bluetooth or, in the case of next-generation Lumias running Windows Phone 8, through NFC. Of course, Nokia isn’t about to leave anyone out in the cold, so if you’ve got a phone that doesn’t have Bluetooth or NFC, you can connect your device to the speaker through a 3.5mm jack. To top things off, we’re told that the battery lasts for 10 hours before needing a recharge.

There isn’t a solid release date for the PlayUp speakers yet, but Nokia says that they’ll begin shipping “before the end of the year.” While we don’t know the release date, we do know the price – picking up one of these will set you back €149, which is around $187. The PlayUp speaker is only the first product of Nokia’s partnership with JBL, and we’re told that more is on the way in the future. Stay tuned.

Microsoft winds down the Zune brand, Zune HD apps and select features to go on August 31st

Microsoft’s Zune music service is definitely not going to bounce back with a vengeance at all, as Zune Pass subscribers have begun to receive word that the service’s Mixview playback as well as channel playlist features will no longer be in effect from August 31st onwards – leaving you with just slightly more than a day left to enjoy such features. Not only that, you can also bid adieu to music video streaming from the Zune desktop software.

As for user licenses that are connected to previously purchased music videos, those are being looked into at the moment, where user access to old content on new machines will be revoked. Users will also be unable to send or receive messages, invite friends or share their favorite songs, playlists as well as look into their play history. So much for “Welcome to the Social”, right? Zune HD apps will also be killed off at the end of the month, so you might want to take out your hankies and start blowing that horn if you ever had a soft spot for the Zune as well as its features and services.

LaunchPort AP.3 sleeve delivers inductive charging for iPads

LaunchPort’s claim to fame is being the creator of the world’s first inductive charging and mounting system for the iPad, and their latest release comes in the form of the LaunchPort AP.3 magnetic sleeve. The AP.3 will cater for the new iPad and iPad 2, so first generation iPad owners will have to sit out on this one. Fitting your iPad snugly, the AP.3 lets you mount it via magnets to the LaunchPort’s base station and wall system, and of course, most metallic surfaces will also do, although those who are more careful with their devices might think twice since having your iPad fall from a height such as a refrigerator door might result in a cracked display at worst, never mind that the risk of that happening is not all that high to begin with. Expect the inductive charging system to kick in the moment the AP.3 sleeve is connected to a Wall Station or Base Station.

This is one step closer to a wireless lifestyle, but like we mentioned in the past, it is nearly impossible to live out a wireless lifestyle just as it is to go paperless, you will still need cables and paper at one time or another, although there are creative ways to handle both. The AP.3 Sleeve will come with comfortable hand grips on each side, where it is contoured to fit perfectly, coming in black or white colors at $149 a pop.

Mad Catz Tritton 720+ 7.1 Surround Headset

The latest headset from Mad Catz comes in the form of the Tritton 720+ 7.1 Surround Headset, where it will continue from where the Tritton AX 720 left off. Playing nice with the Xbox 360 console as well as the PS3 console from Sony, the Mad Catz Tritton 720+ 7.1 Surround Headset is tipped for a September 2012 release date, which means you only have one month, tops, left to wait assuming you are in the market scouring for a new gaming headset after wearing out your previous one.

Just what does the Tritton 720+ deliver that would entice you to part with your hard earned money, apart from having something new and shiny in your hands? Some of the key enhancements to deliver superior performance and sustained comfort include all new Neodymium drivers that gulped some growth hormones, increasing in size from 40mm to 50mm so that you can experience improved bass response and audio clarity. Apart from that, there is the latest Dolby Headphone technology so that your ears will dance to rich 7.1 Surround Sound, making it perfect to locate where your enemy is in a FPS, or maximize your enjoyment of a movie blockbuster.

Other features include Selectable Voice Monitoring (SVM) so that you can hear your own voice through the headset, and your ears will not “burn” after extended hours of gaming thanks to a lightweight and flexible design.

HP announces 15-inch Spectre XT TouchSmart Ultrabook, Envy 4 Ultrabook with touch

If you thought laptop / tablet mashups were trendy, we can think of at least one other theme you’re going to see repeated ad nauseam over the coming months: PC makers putting touchscreens on things that didn’t used to have them. That’s right, in addition to all those funky-looking hybrids, you’re going to see lots of familiar-looking laptops get upgraded with touch in time for the Windows 8 launch. Exhibit A: HP, which just announced two conventional notebooks with touch. This includes a finger-friendly version of the 14-inch Envy 4 Ultrabook, as well as the Spectre XT TouchSmart Ultrabook, a 15-inch version of the Spectre XT announced earlier this year. Both will be available during the holiday season. That’s the short version, but if you follow past the break, we’ve got a lot to talk about in the way of specs. Join us, will you?

Adobe pushes TV Everywhere forward with Adobe Pass 2.0, promises easier logins on more devices

No matter what’s going on with Flash, Adobe is still pushing other technologies, and one of them is the one that powered NBC’s Olympics apps this summer, Adobe Pass. The company counted more than 88 million authenticated streams during the games, and its tech is behind apps for other networks like ESPN and Cartoon Network. Now it says it can make things better for cable companies and their customers to get viewing on mobiles with Adobe Pass 2.0, which includes technology like automatic authentication, which was tested on Comcast and Cablevision customers during he Olympics. We tried it then and it couldn’t have been easier, logging in while connected to your home network flips the switch based on IP address or MAC address, and then it worked at home or on the go, no password necessary.

Another feature rolling out is “Free Preview” which lets viewers watch before they’re finished logging in, while a Server Side API on the way should open up access to more apps on more devices. We’re not sure if that’s enough to stem the tide of cable cutting, but if it means more and easier to use viewing even when we’re not in front of the HDTV, then we’re for it. This is all a part of Adobe’s “Project Primetime” which it expects to roll out in full across iOS, Android, Windows, Mac OS and other platforms later this year, check the blog post linked below and video after the break for more details.
