Windows Phone 8 launch date tipped for October 29

A tipster with information on Microsoft and the launch of their next-generation mobile operating system Windows Phone 8 has let it be known that October 29th will be the day. This information comes from ZDNet where they’ve gotten word from this anonymous source familiar with the matter that October will be one massively important month for Microsoft. October 25th appears to still be the day that Windows 8 will be launching, but now it’ll be coming with a launch of Surface RT as well. Right after this, on October 29th, Windows Phone 8 will pop up as well – and of course October 30th is the start of Microsoft’s Build 2012 conference too!

When October 25th rolls around, several manufacturers will be launching massive products for the masses, each of them with Windows 8 or Surface RT. With Windows 8 and Surface RT ARM-based devices being ready for action overnight, the whole world will change – but not quite entirely until the 29th of that month. On the 29th of October, Microsoft has been tipped as readying Windows Phone 8 for the rest of the devices on the market – that covers desktop computing as well as the whole mobile universe.

The 29th of October will be the “launch” of Windows Phone 8, and with it will come an avalanche of devices – just like the original launch of Windows Phone 7 over a year ago. Remember the excitement the technology universe expressed when Microsoft first made an effort to re-initiate their mobile offering with that OS? It was awesome! We promise. Now we’re getting pumped up for not only Microsoft to bring the heat, but their partners as well.

Samsung made it clear that they’re bringing a lovely Galaxy-like styling to the Windows Phone 8 universe with the ATIV S while Nokia has an event set up for early next month with their own set of next-generation devices. Can you even believe that Apollo is near?!

Google looking to sell Motorola’s set-top box unit

Google bought a lot of stuff when it purchased Motorola Mobility, but it turns out that the company isn’t interested in some of it. Bloomberg reports that Google is looking to sell off Motorola’s Home Business unit, which sells set-top boxes to cable providers. Google doesn’t want anything to do with set-top boxes, it seems, as the company has reportedly hired Barclays Plc to handle the sale.

Bloomberg spoke to two people familiar with the situation, with one of them claiming that the sale could potentially bring in $2 billion for Google. Such a sale has been rumored for a while, with one of these anonymous sources claiming that Motorola has been trying to sell off this division for a number of years – back in 2009, the source claims, Motorola tried to sell it for a hefty $4 billion.

It isn’t hard to imagine why Google doesn’t have any interest in set-top boxes. Google bought Motorola for access to its extensive patent portfolio, and building Motorola’s smartphone and tablet business is one of the top priorities for Google. After all, Google has Apple to compete with, and it views this Motorola acquisition as a good way to do just that.

This sale is still at a very early stage, so it may be a while before Google can find a buyer for the Home Business division. Then again, that may not be the case at the end of everything, because Google will be trying awfully hard to sell off this division so it can take that money and focus on Motorola’s smartphone business. Stay tuned, as we’ll have more information on this potential sale when it surfaces.

Windows Phone 8 may land October 29th, just days after its desktop brother

Windows Phone 8 may land October 29th

Word on the street is that Windows Phone 8 will get its official launch on October 29th. When asked for confirmation, Microsoft issued a pretty standard “no comment,” which leads us to believe there might actually be something to this rumor. With Windows 8 slated to land on October 26th, we wouldn’t be surprised to see its portable counterpart hit the market just a few days later, as ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley is suggesting. October is already expected to be a rather hectic month for Microsoft, with launch of countless Windows 8 tablets scheduled. Putting WP8 out alongside its first batch of handsets (hello ATIV S!) would only make sense, really. We can think of a reason or two that Microsoft might want to utterly dominate a few news cycles.

Google launches new Google+ features for businesses

With a number of business “going Google,” the massive search company has launched the first set of Google+ features for businesses. With this “initial set” of features now available, Google is letting all Google Apps customers get an early look at them in a “full preview mode.” This preview allows businesses already using Google Apps to try out these Google+ features through the end of 2013 for free, with Google working to improve its offerings during that time.

There are three features Google is focusing on with this initial offering. The first is giving Google+ users the ability to share posts only with the other people in their organization. This means that users can share information with everyone else at their workplace quickly, without the worry that users in their other Google+ circles will see what they’re posting.

The second feature Google is focusing on is Gmail, Calendar and Docs integration with Hangouts. When a video meeting is initiated through Google Hangouts, users have the option of sharing a Google Doc with the rest of the people in the meeting, allowing “colleagues to write or edit a document together from anywhere.” Users can also join a Hangout directly from Gmail, and with today’s roll out, users can add a Hangout to Google Calendar and join the meeting straight from the Calendar entry.

Finally, Google has included a number of administrative features, allowing companies to set defaults for post restrictions for the entire company, or set up restrictions for Hangouts to facilitate private meetings within the company. Google will be rolling out these new features throughout the day, and promises more – including a mobile app – for the coming months. It will also be improving the offered features and adding new ones throughout this preview process. Stay tuned.

Motorola Droid RAZR M 4G LTE appears with silver trim

It’s time again to see the next Verizon 4G LTE device before its official launch as another leaked photo appears to be bringing along with it one more glimpse of the sharp-looking Droid RAZR M 4G LTE in silver. Of course if you take into account that the previous versions of the DROID RAZR were made in “white” trim, you might be thinking that this device is bringing on white – it’s all up to your vision at this point as no official word has been dropped. This device has also had some specifications leaked with it just yesterday for your perusal.

The images you see above were leaked to Engadget by an unnamed supplier of leaked images and does indeed seem to be quite legitimate looking. If you’ll have a peek at the previous leak you’ll find that the Droid RAZR M also has a black color scheme like the DROID RAZR. This device is more than likely set for both of these colors for launch time which will be approaching quite soon, we must assume.

This device has been tipped to be carrying a dual-core dual-core MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 processor and it’s display will be a lovely 4.3-inch qHD (960 x 540) Super AMOLED Advanced. It’ll be popping up with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and will have a 8 megapixel camera on its back. The front will have a camera as well, in this case a 3 megapixel beast of a shooter able to take 720p video as well.

This smartphone will have many of the same protections that recent Motorola devices have had including splash coating on its innards and Kevlar weave backing over the battery. Like recent Motorola devices as well, we’re not expecting to see a replaceable battery here, this allowing the manufacturer to make the device much thinner than it otherwise would have been able. Keep your eyes to the Motorola tag to see where this is all going, and expect a release in early September – the 5th, to be exact!
