Apple security update bypasses Snow Leopard and Windows users

Mountain LionApple recently rolled out the most recent version of its Safari Web browser, where it has patched over 100 vulnerabilities. For those who are running on an older version of Mac OS X, or any other version of Windows from Microsoft, it can be said that you are out of luck – sort of. After all, Safari 6 is available only for the spanking new OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion operating system, as well as its predecessor, the OS X 10.7 Lion, which is less than a year old actually. Those who are still running on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard will be disappointed to know that the upgrade will not apply this time around. Sounds rather disappointing, especially when you consider how as of June this year, Snow Leopard was still running on nearly 40% of all Macs – this does make you wonder whether Apple is silently asking everyone to make the upgrade in a forced manner.

Safari for Windows? That is even more ignominious, especially when Apple had already removed entire traces of it from its website. Apple did not respond to requests for a comment, but right at the bottom of the official Safari page, it states, “The latest version of Safari is available in Mountain Lion. The latest version of Safari for Lion is available through Software Update.” Do you think this is fair for Snow Leopard users?

Proteus digestible microchips

I guess it is safe to say that one should not ingest microchips at any time – not only is the feeling uncomfortable, passing it out on the other hand does not sound as though it is one of the more pleasant and comfortable experiences to date. Not only that, I do not think you will be able to get the kind of taste that you look forward to in terms of just desserts. Well, the Proteus digestible microchips are pills that are meant to be eaten (hopefully you are able to choose from a wide range of flavors), and once you have swallowed them, they operate right from within your body, where all important medical data will be transmitted directly to your phone.

The amount of technology has yet to progress to a stage where the ingested pills will be able to rewire your insides, transforming you into a cyborg of sorts. Apart from that, Proteus Digital Health wants to continue working on a system which is capable of verifying whether you are have been a good patient who has been taking your medication. The Proteus digestible microchips are made out of little amounts of silicon, magnesium, and copper, and upon swallowing it, your stomach’s acid will result in the microchip to generate a small voltage signal which can be detected using a skin patch. This patch will transmit a confirmation message to your handset which in turn sends it over to your doctor.

Nintendo DSi to come in matte red and matte blue colors to the US

Nintendo of America has announced that they will be introducing a couple of new colors for the Nintendo DSi in the US – and we are talking about matte red and matte blue. These new colors are able to arrive at retailers “as early as this week,” or at least that is what Nintendo of America tweeted. Better late than never, don’t you think so? The thing is, how many folks would be forking out money for a Nintendo DSi when there is this other handheld console from the Japanese game meisters themselves, kwnon as the Nintendo 3DS. Which color suits you better – matte red or matte blue?

Lego Motorized Wheelchair

Once in a while, we end up looking at a particular piece of Lego art that will definitely turn heads. This is one of those times, especially when you are sick and tired of doing this particular activity known as “walking”. If you think that this activity of walking is a chore, perhaps you might want to pull some help from the Lego Motorized Wheelchair. Obviously, you are unable to purchase this from any off the shelf Lego set, but rather, you will need to purchase your fair bit of Lego Mindstorm parts to end up with such a creation.

According to Lego robot builder Simon “Burf” Burfield, this particular Lego Motorized Wheelchair is what he deems as the first motorized wheelchair of its kind in the world. The entire system tips the scales at 44 pounds, where it relied on half a dozen Lego Mindstorms NXTs, 12 Mindstorms motors, an equal number of Lego Mindstorms touch sensors, as well as 12 Rotacaster mult-directional wheels in addition to an entire bunch of Lego Technic. Not the fastest motorized wheelchair on the market, but while it does not measure up in speed, it does have its fair share of carrying capacity, capable of carrying someone up to 90kg.

House of Lords wants UK TV to go fully online and leave airwaves clear for cellphones

House of Lords wants UK TV to go fully online to leave the airwaves clear for cellphones

The UK House of Lords’ Communications Committee has suggested that all broadcast TV should be moved to the internet to free up wireless spectrum for cellphones. In its report, the panel found that whilst such a network would be cheaper and more efficient in the long run, it would also require extensive re-building of the country’s archaic communications infrastructure. Given that the analog-to-digital switchover is currently in progress, it seems unlikely that a further transition will be timetabled — especially since there are still concerns over the cost of bringing fiber-optic broadband to rural areas. Any change in the plan will need to be rubber-stamped by Government, but perhaps it’d be more amenable if they saw how good 8K video looks on one of those connections.
