Original Apple 1 to be auctioned off at $127,000

Christie’s has a technological treasure in its wings that will be auctioned off soon, and technology buffs would definitely be interested in the original Apple 1 on offer. Right now, it seems that around 50 or so Apple 1 computers exist in the world (personally built by Steve Wozniak himself), and it will most probably fetch a maximum of $127,000, which can be considered to be a bargain when you compare it to the last unit sold. The Apple 1 computer will be put up for sale in October, this particular unit with serial number 22 hails from Joe Copson, a former Apple employee.

Why did we say that $127,000 was a bargain? Well, a couple of years ago, an Apple 1 computer was put up for sale sans casing albeit with its original original box, instruction manuals, and a signed letter from Jobs, where it retailed for $210,700 at an auction. Steve Wozniak himself attended the auction, enhancing the winning bid by including an autographed letter. Sometime in the middle of this year, we saw another Apple 1 exchanging hands for £240,000.

Samsung ATIV Smart PC and Smart PC Pro with keyboard dock unveiled

While up on stage for their Unpacked event Samsung hasn’t wasted any time announcing a slew of new devices. What you’ll see next is their new Smart PC. With an 11.6-inch HD display tablet that combines into a very Transformer-like keyboard dock this PC offers both a portable and a full keyboard typing experience.

Let’s forget a minute that Samsung just got sued by Apple and look at just how extremely similar that picture above is to the ASUS Transformer and Transformer Prime Android tablets. Moving on! The Samsung ATIV Smart PC and Smart PC PRO are similar to the earlier announced ARM Windows RT model — only will offer the full experience.

With a fully detachable keyboard, S-Pen stylus input and more these tablets that double as laptops will be compatible with both the upcoming Windows 8, as well as the older and still extremely popular Windows 7. The 11.6-inch display only comes with a 1366 x 768 resolution but the rest of the specs are quite nice.

The Smart PC comes with a lower Intel ATOM processor, 3G/4G capabilities, 2GB of RAM, HDMI-out, 128GB storage, and an 8 megapixel camera all running for about 13 hours according to Samsung. The beefier ATIV Smart PC Pro however comes with a much improved Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM, 256 GB SSD, 1080p HD display, USB 2.0 and 3.0 as well as HDMI-out. It does suffer in battery life and a smaller 5 megapixel camera though.

Samsung hasn’t unveiled any official pricing or release date details but surely they’ll be coming along here shortly. With Windows 8 not arriving til the tail end of October we are hopeful for a mid September launch. Stay tuned for our hands-on coming up momentarily.

Logitech UE announces new line of products for music enthusiasts

Now more than ever, people want their music on the go. Logitech is looking to tap into that market by announcing a new line of Logitech UE products aimed directly at those who take their music seriously. This new line includes everything from earphones to portable speakers to headphones, so hit the jump to find out more about them.

Let’s jump right in with the Logitech UE Boombox and the Logitech UE Mobile Boombox. Both allow you to connect smartphones and tablets through Bluetooth – the Boombox can support up to 8 devices connected through Bluetooth, and it can handle three connected at once. The Mobile Boombox can only handle two devices connected at once, but its advantage comes in its rechargeable battery. While both come with a rechargeable battery, the Mobile Boombox can go for 10 hours, whereas the Boombox is only quoted for six hours of use. You’ll be getting better sound quality with the Boombox, as it Logitech says it comes with “eight custom-tuned drivers,” but the trade-off is that the Mobile Boombox’s smaller form makes it easier to use on the go. There’s also price to consider, with the Boombox coming in at $249.99 and the Mobile Boombox priced at $99.99.

If the boomboxes aren’t quite your cup of tea, the company is also offering the Logitech UE Smart Radio. Using “one simple, unified interface,” users can access their favorite Internet radio stations, music services or their personal music collections on PC or Mac, and it even comes with a color display that shows the track name, album art and station information. Users can also save their favorite stations to access them quickly in the future, and connect an iPhone, iPad or Android device to use it for navigation. The Logitech UE Smart Radio comes with a six-hour rechargeable battery and will set you back $179.99.

Next up, we have a rather expensive set of earphones – the Logitech UE 900 Noise-Isolating Earphones, to be specific. The earphones’ “four-armature speakers and a three-way crossover in a
universal fit” allow for excellent sound quality, and the earphones come with two detachable cables, one of which includes a mic and controls. To make sure the sound you’re hearing is as clean as possible, the earphones also feature five silicon and three Comply Foam tips. You better be ready to shell out a lot of cash for these, though, as Logitech UE has given these a price of $399.99.

In addition to these new earphones, Logitech UE will also be launching three new sets of headphones. The Logitech UE 9000 Headphones are the most impressive of the bunch, but they’re also the most expensive. The headphones feature Bluetooth connectivity, meaning that you can listen wirelessly, but there’s also a cord included in case you run out of juice during an extended listening period. Touch controls allow you to answer calls, switch between songs and change the volume, and Logitech’s “high-resolution drivers” are present to ensure that sound quality is top notch. Featuring around-the-ear cushions made of memory foam and articulating joints, the Logitech 9000 Headphones come in at $399.99.

If you want a good set of headphones but don’t want to shell $400 for them, Logitech has you covered there too. The Logitech UE 6000 Headphones feature a fold-up design, plush around-the-ear memory foam cushions, UE sound signature and active noise canceling technology. The UE 6000 sports a price tag of $199.99, which is a little more manageable than the $400 the 9000 demands. Even cheaper still are the Logitech UE 4000 Headphones, complete with Logitech’s high-sensitivity drivers, plush memory foam cushions in an on-the-ear design, and – like the 900 earphones – an on-cord mic and controls. They also fold up when you’re not using them, and come with a travel pouch to store them in. Expect to pay $99.99 for these bad boys.

Logitech says that all of these products should be available beginning in September, which as you may have already noticed is right around the corner. Since all of these products are compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, you’ll be able to find them at Apple Stores across the country. Are you planning on buying any of these new products?

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update headed for Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 10.1 ‘very soon’

Jelly BeanIf there is one thing that we might have missed out in stressing on earlier this morning at Samsung Unpacked, it would be this – their IFA 2012 keynote in Berlin, Germany, has more or less confirmed that there is an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update headed for the direction of the Samsung Galaxy S3 as well as the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 “very soon”. I know that there aren’t too many months left in 2012 before the calendar spills its guts over to 2013, but surely “very soon” is a far more optimistic view compared to “later this year”, right? I am looking at no later than October, but that alone is open to speculation until the horse’s mouth spits something out for us to chew on (and definitely not an apple here). After all, there was a leaked copy of an official Samsung Galaxy S3 Jelly Bean build that was outed earlier in August, but it would be wise as usual to tread on the side of caution here.

Gamera II hits new high with unofficial human-powered helicopter altitude record (video)

DNP Altera Human Heli

The University of Maryland team responsible for the Gamera II human-powered helicopter NAA flight time record may be on its way to bagging another one — this time for altitude. With new freshman pilot Henry Enerson spinning the cranks, the gigantic four-rotor design ascended to eight feet, an unexpectedly lofty level, according to the team. The well-controlled 25 second flight was far less than the record 49.9 seconds Gamera achieved earlier, but the new altitude bodes well for its upcoming Sikorsky Prize attempt. That $250,000 award, unclaimed since 1980, requires a 10-foot altitude to be maintained for one minute, and now looks to be distinctly in the UMD group’s sights. Check the video after the break, and marvel at the ungainly quadrocopter’s latest aerial exploit.

Samsung Unpacked, packed

We are finally done with Samsung Unpacked at IFA 2012 in Berlin, Germany, and what have we gathered so far? The recent ruling against them failed to take the wind out of Samsung’s sails, judging by what we saw. First of all, there is the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 which has finally arrived, and while it has a larger display than its predecessor, it loses out in terms of resolution, but overall the Galaxy Note 2 does seem to make a decent stand for itself if you are looking to jump aboard the phablet bandwagon.

As for those who want to try out this new niche of Android-powered cameras, right now you have two choices – the Nikon Coolpix S800c, or the Samsung Galaxy Camera. It does seem that on paper, the latter has a slight advantage due to 3G and 4G connectivity (let us leave the battery life out of the equation at the moment), not to mention shipping with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean (the Nikon S800c is far behind with Android 2.3 Gingerbread), while sporting a 21x zoom lens as opposed to the S800c’s 10x optical zoom.

Samsung has not neglected the Windows camp either, with the announcement of the Samsung ATIV S smartphone as well as the ATIV Tab Windows RT-powered tablet. These seem to be experiments by Samsung to test the Windows market at the moment where such mobile devices are concerned, and it remains to be seen whether the uptake will be positive enough to see Samsung venture further in the future.

What do you think of today’s Samsung Unpacked event? What are the hits and misses in your book? Want to know what the event was like? Check (and Like!) the photo album on Facebook.

Nike LunarTR1+ Review: The Physical Trainer Strapped To Your Feet [Video]

I haven’t played basketball in years. I don’t even exercise regularly. I love air conditioning. I explain all this to D-TRAINED, a Nike physical trainer, on a soul-sapping hot day. He ignores my slob story and runs me through a grueling series of drills. Afterward, with my hands melting into my knees, D-TRAINED walks over and hands me an iPhone—and it shows me what I really did. More »

Sony Xperia J does the “meh” dance

After the highs of the Sony Xperia T as well as the rather beefed up smartphone that looks sleek in the form of the Sony Xperia V, here is a little parting gift from Sony Mobile for folks who want a device that is functional at best, and in all probability, will not make a dent in your bank account at the same time. We are referring to the Sony Xperia J which comes in a 9.2mm slim stylish design, sporting a standard 4.0” FWVGA display as well as a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus capability at the back. In front, there is a camera embedded as well for video chats as well as those vanity images you love taking of yourself.

The Sony Xperia J can be said to be the entry level smartphone for folks who want to dive into the world of Android, and if you happen to be a social network junkie, you will be pleased to know that the Sony Xperia J will illuminate all your integrated social media updates whenever there is one, so that you will be kept in the loop at all times. Choose from black, gold, white and pink shades when the Sony Xperia J finally arrives. [Press Release]

What in the Hell Is This? [Video]

Nokia has a new teaser video on its YouTube page. In it a girl—a very stylish girl—rides her bike along the waterfront of a Finnish neighborhood (well, presumably Finnish). At the end appears the text “Things Are About to Change” with a date: 9.05.12. Of course, this is the date of the Nokia event next week. And if we had to guess, it will have something to do with Windows Phone 8. But what in the hell does that have to do with a girl on a bike? More »

Netgear intros sharing-savvy N750 Premium Edition router, powerline and WiFi adapters for media fans

Netgear intros sharingsavvy N750 Premium Edition router, powerline and WiFi adapters for media fans

Netgear is giving its home networking the same sort of tuneup going into the fall that you’d give your car — not a complete overhaul, but enough to keep it running in top form. Headlining the pack, the N750 Premium Edition router you’re looking at above upgrades the original N750 through a better ability to play with others: the dual-band WiFi hotspot’s ReadyShare file access expands to the cloud, while its USB support now envelops Apple’s AirPrint and Time Machine as well as TiVo Storage. Media sharing mavens also get their own, more specific add-ons. The Powerline Media Extender can pipe audio (and USB printing or storage) over a 200Mbps link, with a major emphasis on AirPlay streaming; the N900 4-port WiFi Adapter is a slightly less exotic, 450Mbps wireless-to-Ethernet bridge for multi-device home theaters. If Netgear’s refresh is tempting enough to prompt a trade-up, you can snag the N750 Premium Edition immediately for $120 or wait until September and October for the respective launches of the N900 adapter for $80 and the Powerline Music Extender in its single pack ($99) or dual-device starter kit ($139) editions.
