Sony XBR-84X900 4K LED TV eyes-on: Amazing

If you are a TV enthusiast, you have undoubtedly heard of the new Sony XBR-84X900 LED TV. If you haven’t, this new television from Sony was just announced at IFA and we’ve covered the launch as it was announced. It has a 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution, which is exactly four times as many pixels as today’s 1080p standard.

Tradeshows are not always a great place to look at these TVs since the lighting is so over-the-top, if not outright weird. So instead, we headed for the Sony Store in Palo Alto, where we where the Sony XBR-84X900 is currently on display. Phil Molyneux, Sony Electronics USA’s COO was very proud to show us the capabilities of this TV set. Here’s a photo of him next to the television so that you can have a sense for how big 84″ is. Toshiba Satellite U920t hands-on

Windows 8 devices are all the rage at IFA this year, especially tablets. Toshiba has a new Satellite – the U920t – on the scene, and like many tablets we’ve seen, this one is convertible into a notebook. However, unlike a number of the tablets we’ve seen, you don’t convert this tablet by attaching it to keyboard dock. Instead, it features a slide out keyboard using a mechanism that Toshiba assures will provide for a smooth and stable transition.

The Satellite U920t comes with a 12.5-inch glossy touchscreen, and as you can imagine, that slide-out keyboard adds a bit of weight to the unit. It weighs in at 1.45 kilograms, which is around 3.2 pounds, so while it’s a bit heavy as far as tablets go, it’s still right around the top-end for Ultrabook weight. The U920t makes use of Intel‘s Core range of processors, and you can run with either 4GB or 8GB of RAM, depending on your preference.

As far as storage goes, Toshiba is making use of solid state drives with the U920t, allowing users to pick from either 128GB or 256GB varieties. It also features two USB 3.0 ports and one full HDMI port, which is a pretty rare sight for tablets. It comes with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities, and even though it doesn’t come with 3G functionality at the moment, Toshiba says that it could update the U920t to include 3G in the near future.

Since it’s a Windows 8 tablet, Toshiba is hoping to have launch bad boy as close to the Windows 8 release date as possible – meaning it should be available right on October 26. Of course, Toshiba may need a bit more time than that, so the company isn’t ruling out an early November launch. The Satellite U920t will cost €949 when it launches in Europe, which comes in just south of $1,200. More details on pricing and availability are likely to follow soon, so keep it here at SlashGear for more information.

Even Radios are Smart

Our sources of music definitely vary. Sometimes it’s our personal collection, sometimes it’s streaming a radio station, sometimes it’s a service like Pandora® or Spotify®. Moving back and forth between devices just to hear what you want is a pain! The time has come for a unified interface, regardless of the source.

Logitech, well known for reliable devices, launched their new line of Logitech UE™ products. The line is targeted to music fans wanting quality sound wherever they go. The Logitech UE Smart Radio provides a unified source to control your tunes, no matter the source. Power the unit on, connect to your wi-fi and the single interface allows you to access computer-stored music, online stations or music services. Save your favorite stations and playlists for one-touch access. And with an add-on app (iOS or Android) your tablet or phone becomes a master controller to access all your music sources. Take the radio on the go or in the back yard too. A rechargeable battery means up to 6 hours of wire-free playback.  The units, announced recently, are not on the market yet but expected to retail for $179.99. Preorders are being taken on Logitech’s website.

So more debate over where your music will come from. Now access them easily with the UE Smart Radio. Who says we have to use different devices to access our tunes? Not Logitech!

Walmart testing ‘Scan & Go’ iPhone self-checkout app, cashiers becoming endangered species

Walmart testing 'Scan & Go' iPhone self-checkout app

Reuters was tipped off to a survey that reveals Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, is testing a new system that would allow customers to scan items with their iPhone then quickly pay at a self-checkout counter. The “Scan & Go” feature won’t let you pay with your phone, at least not yet, but rather than scanning each item individually in line, shoppers will be able to quickly transfer their list to the kiosk and pay in one quick step. The hope is that the new system will dramatically speed checkout times and reduce congestion in the stores. The trial is taking place at the supercenter Rogers, AR, where the entire event will be monitored and recorded for research purposes. Participants are being rewarded with $100 and a $25 gift certificate towards their shopping experience. When or if “Scan & Go” will be delivered to John Q. Public remains to be seen. But we’re sure fans of rolled back prices are eager to see it go live.
