Nokia’s unsafe cyclist promises ‘things are about to change’ in confusing new teaser (video)

Nokias unsafe cyclists promises things are about to change in confusing new teaser video

We know that Nokia’s got something big planned for September 5th, and we’re reasonably sure that it’s going to be the company’s new Windows Phone 8 flagship. To whet our appetites, it’s released a 21-second teaser featuring a helmet-free cyclist smiling at the camera and not spending enough time watching where she’s going. We can’t find any clues in the footage (after the break), except that it’s using the same font that we saw in the run up to the Pureview launch. Who knows, maybe we can get our hopes up for a Lumia device rocking that 41-megapixel sensor.

Netgear Powerline Music Extender streams music and more

Netgear has a new powerline networking device called the XSUB2511. Like most powerline networking gear, it will connect your Internet connection to your power lines in the house to share that connectivity without needing a wireless network. This new adapter allows more than simply allowing you to share your Internet connection.

The Powerline Music Extender also allows the user to stream music to speakers anywhere in the home from a smartphone, tablet, or Windows computer. Both Apple and Android hardware is supported for music streaming. Users can choose specific remote speakers in the home that are connected to the new powerline music extender and played music easily.

Mac computers and iOS devices use Airplay functionality for streaming music while PCs and Android devices need to download an app to stream music. The music can be streamed to any audio system or device that connects via RCA jacks. Apple users can also stream music throughout the house from services like Pandora, Spotify, or Deezer.

An available download for PCs allows the user to connect a Windows computer to a remote USB device located anywhere in the home thanks to the integrated USB port on the powerline adapter. The connected USB device can be anything from a printer to a hard drive. The adapter also has a pass-through outlet so you can still plug devices into your outlet. The Powerline Music Extender Starter kit sells for $139, and a single adapter sells for $99. Availability is set for October.

Samsung Canada gifts a fan with a one-of-a-kind Galaxy S3

We’re sure that many companies get bombarded on a daily basis from users asking for free stuff. This could range from free accessories, to free phones, computers, tablets and etc. Safe to say most companies probably ignore these requests, but in what appears to be a publicity stunt, Samsung Canada has decided to oblige one lucky customer. Shane from Canada messaged Samsung Canada on Facebook in hopes that he might be able to get a free Samsung Galaxy S3 in exchange for the drawing above.

Samsung Canada humored him by turning him down, but gave him back another drawing in return. However it seems that they had a change of heart and not only did they eventually give Shane a Galaxy S3, but a fully customized one with the back and front of the device featuring his drawing, and a custom launcher wallpaper which is also that of his drawing! Talk about good customer service! It’s most definitely one of a kind and Shane is a very lucky man. While there’s no guarantee you will be given the same treatment, we’re pretty sure that once this news breaks, Samsung will be receiving a ton of drawings in their inbox.

Mysterious 10″ HTC tablet spotted in photos, possible announcement at IFA?

When it comes to HTC tablets, the Taiwanese company has been pretty quiet about it so far, but it looks like the company could be unveiling a brand new device at IFA which will be taking place this week. Thanks to a tweet from EVLeaks, several photos of an alleged 10” HTC tablet have been revealed. Assuming this is to be believed, this is a rather unique looking tablet and resembles a digital photo frame or maybe even a tiny monitor. The bottom portion of the tablet has a lot of extra space, but oddly enough there appears to be a camera lens situated there as well, making us wonder how would one go about holding this device. In any case since there has been no official announcement yet, we suggest you treat this with some skepticism for now, but if anything no one can accuse HTC of copying designs with this device!

Another Sign Of A New iPhone? Apple Will Pay You To Recycle Your 4S

iphone 4s recycling from apple

Apple is, as usual, remaining tight-lipped about whether it will be releasing any new devices this autumn — and even if there will be an event scheduled for September 12, as many have been reporting. Meanwhile, here is a sign that the company could be preparing for a new phone launch: Apple is offering users an option to recycle their iPhone 4S devices for up to $345 back in the form of an Apple Gift Card. Apple is among a number of other companies that have already been offering 4S device rebates (here’s a top 10 list from 9to5mac), with the highest offer being $500 on Amazon.

The addition of the 4S to the list was pointed out earlier by The Next Web, although it’s not clear whether the 4S models were added today or some time previously. Apple’s store had been down for several hours earlier today and this could have been the reason why. We have contacted Apple to ask and will update as we learn more.

Apple’s highest offer of $345, and Amazon’s for $500, is for the most premium of the devices: the 64GB White iPhone 4S. A black 16GB version of the 4S will net $285 from Apple, according to an estimate it uses from PowerON.

These prices are for devices that are in good condition — no water damage, no cracks, no scuff marks. In return, users get a Apple Gift Card — usable, of course, for either another Apple iPhone or towards another Apple product.

When you trade in your phone, if the device is in good order, Apple says it gets resold as used or reconditioned; if it’s not in good repair it gets broken down for recycling responsibly.

The recycling issue is a huge one and there is a lot of pressure on phone makers to play a bigger role in helping to manage it. According to one estimate from the United Nations, global electronic waste is growing to 40 billion tons every year, and mobile phones are a billion-device contributor to that problem.

Cricket Wireless unveils new wireless plans

If you’re a fan of no contract wireless plans, you may be familiar with Cricket Communications. The company is a subsidiary of Lead Wireless and has a number of contract free and reasonably priced plans for smartphones and feature phones. Cricket has announced new wireless rate plans and some have more music available.

All Cricket Android rate plans now include Muve Music. That music plan allows for unlimited music downloads on all Android devices. That addition eliminates one major difference between Cricket Wireless’ rate plans and the new RadioShack rates that offered unlimited music for smartphone users. RadioShack’s wireless plans are said to run on the Cricket Wireless network.

The new rate plans from Cricket will be available starting on September 2 at company-owned stores, dealers, and online. The feature phone plans start at $35 or $45 per month with unlimited talk and text. The smartphone plans start at $50 for unlimited talk, text, and 3G data with 1 GB allotted per month before speeds are throttled.

The $60 monthly smartphone plan has 2.5 GB of data before speeds are throttled. There is also a $70 smartphone plan that offers 5 GB of full speed data. Both the $60 and $70 plans offer the ability to tether your smartphones. The new pricing is exactly the same as what leaked from RadioShack, but the $70 monthly plan wasn’t noted in the RadioShack leak.

Following the release of its smartphone hands-free car kit, TomTom is previewing its new navigation app for Android handsets at Teutonic trade show IFA. When it arrives in October, it’ll offer navigation, traffic and IQ routes to tempt users away from Google’s bundled navigation applications and onto the company’s paid service.
