Intel opens up about its ‘Knights Corner’ supercomputer co-processor

Intel opens up about its Knights Corner supercomputer offering

HotChips is the show where chip makers come to show off their latest slices of silicon, and Knights Corner architect George Chrysos spilled the beans on Santa Clara’s Xeon Phi co-processor. The unit’s designed to bolt onto Xeon chips to help supercomputers crunch the numbers faster, by handling the “highly parallel” grunt work necessary for genetic and climate modeling, among other things. Chrysos has lofty goals for the hardware, hoping that it’ll contribute to “scientific and technical progress,” while we’re just excited to see if it can help the company reclaim its Top 500 crown from IBM.

Do You Know if Your Tweets Are Protected by Law? (Updated) [Twitter]

You say terrible things on Twitter, and terrible things in private, and really goddamn terrible things in private on Twitter. And that’s OK! Because according to a ruling following a subpoena for protected tweets of an Occupy Wall Street protestor—which Twitter protested—your tweets are your business. More »

iPhone 5 HD photos appear with specific measurements

If you were looking for a set of high-definition photos of the new iPhone 5 (or whatever they’ll end up calling it) next to the iPhone 4 AND the iPhone 3G, today’s you’re lucky day. Today a collection of photos have been revealed by SoHu.com where they’ve gotten their hands on what appears to be an iPhone 5 case model – handed out to 3rd party accessory manufacturers so that they might know the shape and size of the device before it’s released. Here you’ll see the next iPhone – or this heavily trafficked model that certainly appears to be the iPhone 5 – next to a couple of its predecessors as well.

The folks at Sohu have gotten their hands on a measured model of Apple‘s newest iPhone as well – showing it to be 124.46 × 58.58 × 7.41mm. They compare this set of measurements to the iPhone 4/4S which come in at 115.2 × 58.6 × 9.3mm. This tells us that the new iPhone is almost exactly the same width of the iPhone 4/4S but is certainly taller by about 10mm. This also shows that the new iPhone is just about 2mm thinner than the previous iPhone, as you can also see in the picture below.

This image also shows that the new iPhone will be working with much slimmer sections of glass on top of and on back of the device – though we’ve seen here and before that the back of the device will very likely be mostly aluminum with a couple sections of glass at the top and bottom for signal strength. The sides of the device appear to have two section breaks and the same sized volume buttons as well as screen lock – and the screen lock has a slightly smaller section of red coloring whilst locked, too.

The iPhone 5 will very likely take on a whole lot smoother appearance as far as individual bits and pieces than we expected when the first “renders” were shown off weeks ago. Here we’re seeing an iPhone that seems downright Apple-worthy – realistic, that is. Have a peek at the timeline below to see additional important news blasts and/or tips and leaks in the history of the release of this device and stay tuned for more! The next-generation iPhone has been rumored to be making its first appearance next month!

The Value Of Your iPhone Drops Every Second, So Try This

iphone4s

The value of your current iPhone is going down as I write this very sentence. And according to Gazelle, current iPhone models traditionally depreciate about 25 percent a couple weeks before the next generation iPhone is unveiled. And guess what? The new iPhone is about two weeks away.

As Rafiki would say in the Lion King, “it is time.”

But what do you do?

Well, lucky for all of us, the guys over at ZDNet put together a nice little price comparison of all your various trade-in programs, which you can find here. The best deal seems to come by way of Amazon’s Trade-In program, which is offering up to $400+ for an excellent-condition iPhone 4S.

Unfortunately, most of those deals force you to return your current iPhone immediately. And who wants to be without their smartphone for a month?

Not I!

For this very reason, Gazelle is offering a cool deal (which ends today, so move now) that will lock in the current price of your iPhone, based on the condition it’s in. But — and this is a big but — you can keep your phone until October 1. That means that there’s a possibility you could get your new iPhone before you ever have to send your current one back. That, of course, depends on how well Apple meets demand, and how quick you are at purchasing gadgetry through a crashing site.

Or, you could just stand in line on September 21.

Kyocera Rise arrives on Virgin Mobile with ICS, 3.5-inch display and slide-out QWERTY keys

Kyocera Rise arrives on Virgin Mobile with 35inch display, 1GHz CPU and slideout QWERTY keys

Just as we’d heard, today’s the day that budget-minded (and not-so-shy) Kyocera Rise hits the Virgin Mobile USA shelves. Available now for a mere $100 — without any contracts, of course — this 3.5-inch, Ice Cream Sandwich device boasts some pretty run-of-the-mill features, including an HVGA, 480 x 320 LCD, a single-core, 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, 2GB of built-in storage which can be expanded to 32GB via microSD and, as you can see above, a full-on, slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Naturally, Virgin Mobile’s betting on folks to bundle the cheap handset with one of its unlimited data plans — not to mention Kyocera’s handset is yet another addition to the prepaid carrier’s rising smartphone lineup. Those interested can give the Rise a better look down below, where a nice gallery filled with charming press shots awaits.

Samsung Galaxy Stellar slated for September 6 launch at Verizon

We’ve already heard a little bit about the mysterious Samsung Galaxy Stellar 4G LTE, but today the floodgates have been opened. Engadget has been in contact with sources that claim the new budget handset will launch at Verizon on September 6. Strangely, neither Verizon nor Samsung have said anything about the device yet, but Engadget’s source was able to provide documentation that dishes plenty of details on the phone’s specs.

As you might expect, we’re not working with too much in the Stellar. We’ve got unnamed 1.2GHz dual-core processor under the hood, the phone is running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, and everything will play out on a 4-inch 800×480 WVGA screen. The whole unit weighs 4.73 ounces, comes equipped with a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and a 3.2-megapixel rear-facing camera, and offers 4GB of internal storage.

So, it isn’t great, but this phone is obviously meant for those who are entering the world of smartphones for the first time. The proof? The Samsung Galaxy Stellar comes complete with a “starter mode.” This isn’t the first time we’ve seen an Android phone offer such a mode, as the Pantech MARAUDER also features a stater mode for new users to take advantage of. We don’t know too much about the Stellar’s starter mode, but a leaked listing describes it as a “new, simple way to interact Access apps and control device settings with ease.”

The Samsung Galaxy Stellar is rumored to cost $100 if you put your John Hancock on a two-year contract, and if this latest rumor proves true, its launch is less than a week away. If that’s the case, then someone at Verizon or Samsung should be talking soon. Then again, since the Stellar doesn’t really have much to write home about, it may just get a silent launch. We shall see, but in the meantime, have a look at our timeline to see what’s going on with Verizon and Samsung these days.

Kindle Fire 2 leaked photos appear with Nokia Maps tip in tow

With less than a week before Amazon’s next press event, several new bits of information have been leaked showing off a new Kindle Fire tablet and tipping Nokia as their new Maps pusher. As Amazon continues to attempt to work with Google’s mobile OS Android with as little Google influence as possible, they’ve been tipped to be working with Nokia Oyj by Rueters where they say that not only will the next Kindle Fire model have either a GPS chip or Wi-fi triangulation, they’ll be working with Nokia’s own brand of GPS mapping rather than Google Maps. The other reveal happening within the last 24 hours includes a couple photos of the Kindle Fire 2 before it hits the press room.

The images you see below show off what The Verge has been tipped is a new Kindle Fire. This unit appears to have a slightly updated user interface working on it as well as a bit of picture-in-picture video chat. You’ll also see a front-facing camera sitting on the top of the long side of the tablet near a microphone hole as well.

This tablet appears to have a rather similar look to the original Kindle Fire with basically the same edge bumper and display size. The unit pictured here is likely a mock-up as some “pixelation” – if you will – does occur in each of the different poses. The border size on each model appears to be a slight bit different as well – it may be, however, that there are two models and one brand.

The image showing two tablets may be showing the 7-inch version of the Kindle Fire 2 while the upright tablet may be the 10-inch Kindle Fire 2. This would lend itself well to the rumor that there are indeed two units and that the smaller one is still a media-toting beast while the larger has a more powerful processor and the ability to work with higher-requirements media. The user interface also reflects the Android Amazon app store’s relatively new look as well – check it out and let us know if you agree!

Scopophilia Chair Has Got Its Eyes on You

Some people love being the center of attention. I am not one of those people. So you can just imagine how I feel about the Scopophilia chair–which is the only chair in the world that’s got a few hundred eyeballs attached all over.

ScopophiliaMy first reaction was: ‘Gah! That is so creepy.’ My second reaction was: ‘Hmm, it’s not really that bad…’ My third reaction: ‘It’s starting to grow on me.’

Then my sister walks in, sees the chair on my screen, and goes: ‘Gah!’ It’s my first reaction all over again.

Anyway, the chair is called Scopophilia for obvious reasons. Of course, I had to look it up as well, but it actually means ‘the love of looking.’ Pretty fitting, isn’t it? While it might look nice/creepy/attractive/scary (based on how you feel about eyes, in general), the fact that the chair is fitted with plastic eyeballs doesn’t make it sounds like a very comfortable one.

Scopophilia1

Scopophilia was designed by Australian artist Fiona Roberts, who explains that “the excessive ‘gaze’ haunts the flesh, generating the uncomfortable feeling of being exposed.” Well, I certainly agree.

These iOS Video Games Are Your Summer-Is-Over Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

Labor Day is the traditional end of summer. Kids go back to school, grown-ups come back from vacation, and for some reason you can’t wear white anymore. But this year, a few excellent game developers—EA, Firemint, Rockstar Games—have used the occasion to discount a whole bunch of great gaming apps. Because the exact thing that someone going back to school or work needs is more distraction, right? More »
