Hurricane Isaac: New Orleans Hunkers Down As Storm Makes Landfall In Louisiana (PHOTOS/ LIVE UPDATES)

NEW ORLEANS — Hurricane Isaac raked the Louisiana coast and headed for a shuttered New Orleans late Tuesday, with brutal timing that made up for much of what it lacked in punch.

Just hours shy of the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Isaac’s approach left deserted streets from New Orleans’ famous French Quarter to Tampa 480 miles away, where Republican conventioneers pressed on with only a passing mention of the storm’s arrival.

Sony unveils latest HX950 flagship HDTV in Japan with ‘Intelligent Peak LED’ backlighting

Sony unveils latest HX950 flagship HDTV in Japan with 'Intelligent Peak LED' backlighting

While Sony’s current lineup of HDTVs has so far topped out with the HX929/920 series that’s been kicking around since 2011, in Japan it has just unveiled a new top of the line model: the HX950. Often rumored in the last few months, it’s available in 65- or 55-inch varieties and features Sony’s now-trademark monolithic style as well as “Intelligent Peak LED” backlighting. Although Sony’s brand name for the tech doesn’t exactly reveal how it works, information leaks have suggested it is full array LED backlighting and not edge based, although we don’t know how many zones (individually controlled light sources) are in play. What we do know, however is that it claims to outperform the LED backlighting in the old 929 quite handily, although we’ll let our eyes be the judge of that.

It also includes MotionFlow XR960 (800 in the US) motion processing tech that can create 240fps from 60 frames and a glass panel mounted to the LCD itself with a special type of resin designed specifically to reduce glare. Finally, there’s also the usual add-ins like 3D and Sony Entertainment Network streaming video. We haven’t seen any European or US information for this model yet, although with IFA 2012 under way and CEDIA coming up that may change quickly. Currently pricing in Japan for the 65-inch is expected to be around 650,000 yen or $8,269 when it ships November 10th, but we should mention actual US prices are typically much lower than a direct conversion. Unofficially, one retailer is already listing the 55- and 65-inch models for sale in the US for $3,499 and $5,499, respectively, although we’d take that with a grain of salt until we know for sure.

Giada i35V nettop has 1-inch thin case

So we took a gander at the AllWinner A10 ARM-powered Mini PC earlier today, and if you thought that this was small, how about laying your eyes on the Gaida i35V Mini PC as well? It has a chassis that measures just 1″ thin, and more importantly, we are interested to know just what kind of mechanical goodness lie underneath the hood of this puppy. For starters, there is a rather basic 1.86GHz Intel Atom D2500 dual core processor which is accompanied by an Intel GMA 3600 graphics chipset, 2GB RAM, and an mSATA solid state disk for storage purposes instead of the usual hard drive.

The lack of moving parts through the mSATA inclusion would mean a lower level of power consumption, not to mention making it easier to keep cool since less heat is generated. No idea on the read/write speeds of this particular mSATA solid state disk, but generally speaking, it should be able to outperform the average hard drive. Other features include a 2.5″ hard drive bay, five USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, VGA, and SPDIF ports, an Ethernet jack, 802.11n WiFi connectivity, mic and headphone jacks, and a memory card reader. The asking price for this puppy is $160, although different online vendors do charge varying prices.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II limited editions announced with $180 ‘Care Package’ sporting an aerial drone

The Call of Duty franchise continues, being yet another huge money spinner for the publishing house never mind that the fare is getting old, so here we are with the announcement of the Call of Duty: Black Ops II limited edition bundles, where $180 will land you the Care Package edition for Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. This bundle is nothing to be sneezed at, as the entire thing comes boxed as an in-gamed care package, although the only thing which is lacking to make it a truly realistic experience is the aerial drop-off moment. Ripping this care package open, you will find a remote controlled MQ-27 Dragonfire quadrocopter drone, now how about that? (more…)

Fliz bicycle is an example in redundancy, requires you to run

A bicycle that works simply because you have to run instead of pedal? I am not quite sure just who in their right mind is going to enjoy the Fliz bicycle, but if the idea has been mooted, you know for sure that there are some pretty crazy folks hanging around out there. The Fliz bicycle is redundant, where it lacks pedals of any sort. The only way it is going to run is through the action of you hanging suspended from the frame above, followed by running. Remember the Flintstones’ car when you were a whole lot younger? Well, this is a far lighter version of that, and I guess it is safe to say that you can only seat one.

The Fliz bicycle does seem to look fun only when you are slaloming downhill, but when it comes to uphill slopes, there is no plausible reason other than you wanting to torture your legs. I do not think that the Fliz bicycle is ever going to be a hot ticket item if it were to be mass marketed and produced.

Juan Williams: Ann Romney A ‘Corporate Wife’ Whose ‘Husband Takes Care Of Her’ (VIDEO)

Fox News’ Juan Williams stunned his colleagues when he attacked Ann Romney’s speech at the Republican National Convention on Tuesday night.

Mitt Romney’s wife generally drew plaudits for her speech, but Williams focused on the opening section of the address, when she talked about the empathy she felt for struggling families. He said that the passages rang hollow coming from her.

“Ann Romney … looked to me like a corporate wife,” he said. “The stories she told about struggles — eh! It’s hard for me to believe. I mean, she’s a very rich woman, and I know that, and America knows that.”

Foldable mouse concept fits into optical disc drive

There are some of us out there who feel far more comfortable working on a touchpad than with a mouse since we have already gotten used to the idea, but there is also another camp which thinks otherwise, and cannot work on a notebook if there is no mouse accompanying it. The thing is, notebook mice these days tend to be wireless and have gotten rather small in size for the sake of portability, but they are still not exactly tiny enough to pack without taking up no extra net space in your luggage.

Enter this conceptual foldable mouse which will actually unfold into the form factor of a disc, letting you stash it away into your optical drive whenever you travel. Seems to be a decent enough idea, until one realizes that these days, there are a fair number of notebooks from the Ultrabook range that do not come with any kind of optical drive due to the slimming down design process, making this particular idea viable for older generation notebooks, or for folks who prefer to purchase entry level notebooks. Now, unless this is powered via USB, it would be interesting to know just how this concept is going to run on since there are no batteries flat enough at the moment, save for the mentioned theoretical organic radical battery above.
