Samsung MV900F camera now available for purchase

It was somewhere in the middle of July when we first took a gander at the Samsung MV900F camera, and we are glad to say that this particular shooter is now ready to rock and roll commercially. The MV900F is the latest Wi-Fi SMART camera shooters from Samsung, where it will continue where the MV800 left off by offering an innovative 180-degree MultiView display that makes it a snap to shoot capture creative self-portraits from any angle. Throw in Wi-Fi connectivity, and sharing images with your mates and family has become far easier than ever before.

Features of the 16.3-megapixel MV900F include a F/2.5 bright lens, a 3.3” 180-degree flip-out display, Gesture Shot that relies on motion-sensing technology for you to zoom and snap a photo using simple hand motions from afar.

This does seem to shape up to be a convenient point-and-shoot camera for beginners, but since it is not part of the rugged range, adults should not pass this to kids for their wanton pleasure, unless they do not mind forking out $349.99 (in white and black shades) for a new model once it breaks after being dropped on the ground for a few times. Tesla solar-powered car charging stations for Model S owners unveiled, will be free to use

Electric car manufacturer Tesla has constructed solar-powered rapid electric car chargers at half a dozen spots throughout the great state of California as an initial rollout, and they have drawn up plans to install even more solar-powered rapid electric car chargers from 2013 onwards. The technology relies on a solar system from SolarCity, and even better news for Tesla’s Model S owners – using those will be free. Calling it the “Supercharger” rapid car charging network, Tesla claims that these stations will offer free charging “indefinitely” for Model S owners, and they are “clean” stations considering how the Superchargers will be powered exclusively by our great ball of fire, the sun.

The Supercharger could be deemed to be the answer to a trio of major problems that prevent electric vehicles from being mainstream, including the ability to drive electric vehicles across long distances in a convenient manner, solve the problem of generating electricity at a distant fossil fuel power plant, as well as tackling the wallet-numbing cost of electricity eventually. Tesla has a global outlook, and wants to install many more Supercharger stations throughout Europe and Asia in addition to the US.

Former Olympus executives plead guilty in accounting fraud trial

Former Olympus executives plead guilty in accounting fraud trial

Three executives from troubled imaging giant Olympus have pleaded guilty to artificially boosting the company’s true value in 2007 and 2008 by concealing losses in financial statements. Former chairman Tsuyoshi Kikukawa, ex-auditor Hideo Yamada and former VP Hisashi Mori were charged with fraud in the scandal, which was brought to light last year by ex-CEO Michael Woodford. He was fired by the Olympus board for blowing the whistle, but reportedly received a large settlement for his troubles. The company has since confessed to cooking the books as far back as the ’90s to hide investment losses, and revealed in 2011 that it had a billion dollars less in value than previously stated. That, along with the poor performance of its camera division, has forced Olympus to seek a partner or raise capital to survive.

Tokyo U reveals that Main Sugar Constituent Provides Effective Anode Material for Sodium Ion Batteries

A research group at the Tokyo University of Science, led by Associate Professor Shinichi Komaba, has confirmed that hard carbon obtained by pyrolyzing sucrose, the main constituent of sugar, is an effective anode material for sodium ion batteries.
Currently, most rechargeable batteries are lithium ion batteries. However, Japan relies on imports for its entire supply of lithium, a rare metal. Consequently lithium ion batteries are expensive. Sodium ion batteries are intended to overcome …

What Happens When You Combine Liquid Nitrogen with 1500 Ping Pong Balls? [Video]

A massive explosion, bro. That’s what you get. If you want to fast forward to the good parts, I’d suggest starting somewhere around 3:45. Though to be honest, hearing Professor Roy Lowry of Plymouth talk about the explosive potential of liquid nitrogen in its gaseous state is pretty damn interesting. [YouTube via Neatorama] More »

Samsung's Smart EX2F pointandshoot now on sale for $500

It has taken Samsung a wee bit longer than expected, but the Korean outfit announced earlier that its intelligent, WiFi-equipped EX2F point-and-shoot is finally hitting US store shelves today. And while availability itself comes a few weeks behind schedule, it gave Samsung plenty of time to reconsider the initial $550 MSRP tag it gave when the camera was first unveiled, which means that $500 gets you in the “smart” shooter game with a 3-inch AMOLED display, 12.4-megapixel CMOS sensor and, of course, the lovely f/1.4-2.7 (24-79mm) lens. Still trying to figure out whether this is indeed the one for you? Then be sure to peruse over our own hands-on to help you decide if it’s worthy of your hard-earned cash.
