Myspace shows off incoming redesign in new video

We don’t hear much from Myspace these days, what with Facebook and Twitter being the go-to social platforms for most of the world. The folks behind Myspace are looking to change that with an upcoming redesign. Of course, Myspace has gone through multiple redesigns in the past, but this new one is particularly eye-catching, and you can get your first look at it in a preview video posted after the jump.

Right off the bat, it’s obvious that the new Myspace is going to be quite the departure from the Myspace we’re used to. The focus on music and entertainment remains in tact, but user profiles are getting completely overhauled. What surprises us the most is how beautiful everything looks, especially when Myspace is coming from a layout that can’t exactly be described as “gorgeous.”

Looking at the video below, it seems that Myspace designers have drawn inspiration from the likes of Pinterest and Microsoft‘s Metro UI. Everything comes together to form a really sleek look, and call us crazy, but this redesign may just do something to bring users back to the service, which has been suffering at the hands of Facebook for years now. Speaking of Facebook, it seems that the new Myspace will sport Facebook and Twitter integration to some degree. It also adds things like a dedicated music player and a persistent navigation bar, so yeah, this is going to be a pretty massive redesign.

No word yet on when this new redesign will land, but those who are interested in this redesign can leave their email address to “request an invite.” It’s unclear whether that invite will be for a beta or the full blown launch of the new Myspace, but we’re tempted to think it’s the latter. What do you think of this new Myspace design? Is it enough to get you to return to the social network?

Verizon iPhones won’t be locked after contract

Most phones sold with a carrier subsidy in the United States are locked. Even after the contract is up, most phones (and all previous iPhones) can’t switch carriers unless you ask your carrier to “unlock” it, and most carriers would only do so if you had a reason, such as international travel. Today, Verizon announced that after contract, iPhone 5s on the Verizon network will be unlocked. In a way, it is betting that its network is so much better for the iPhone 5 that most consumers will choose to stick with Verizon after two years or that most consumers will opt for a new device and contract at that time.

This Air Force Officer Looks Like He’s Serving on Another Planet [Image Cache]

Look at this badass soldier. In this beautiful picture, 1st. Lt. Drew Parks helps guide a Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet through the gorgeous, star-speckled night sky of Kuwait as a part of Operation Spartan Shield. Parks is a JTAC, or a joint terminal attack controller, meaning he helps things along in the air—communications, air traffic, gun fire, attack plans, and general support—from the ground. It’s hard work that requires a great deal of focus. And that amazing view makes his post all the more impressive. More »

Myspace teases slick new revamp with minimalist flair (video)

Myspace teases slick new revamp

When it rebranded as My[___], the social network innovator was met with much deserved derision. It was widely perceived as a desperate attempt to recapture the interest of the hipster class that once propelled it into the mainstream, before being overshadowed by the creeping empire of Facebook. The spectacular crash of the brand eventually led to News Corp. to sell it to Specific Media and Justin Timberlake. Since then, the partnership has been quietly working behind the scenes to rebuild the site and return it to its former glory. Like most of the tech media we’re understandably skeptical of any attempt to relaunch the flagging social service, but after getting a peak at the redesign we’ve gotta say we’re rooting for it.

Myspace (notice, no camel case) has be rebuilt from the ground up and bears almost no resemblance to its previous incarnations. There’s still a heavy focus on music and an integrated playlist creator. Visually everything has been stripped down, with thin clean sans-serif fonts, large images and lots of soft grays. Instead of a vertically aligned wall of posts, profile pages are dominated by a large image that fills the window completely — like Facebook’s cover photos taken to their logical extreme. Images and status updates are arranged in a side-scrolling grid that clearly takes inspiration from some of Tumblr’s flashier templates. It’s all quite beautiful and even integrates with its popular competitors. You can sign up for an invite at the source and check out the teaser after the break.

Apple TV updated to iOS 5.1, brings more AirPlay features and shared photo streams

If you’re a 2nd- or 3rd-gen owner of an Apple TV, you should be receiving an update for iOS 5.1. Apple rolled out a slew of new features for its media-streaming device, the most important of which include shared photo streams, iTunes account switching, and some added AirPlay functionality.

The shared photo streams feature allows you to view the photo streams that you create on your iOS devices on your Apple TV. You can update your photo collections and even invite friends and family to view your photos and comment on them. Also, public photo streams can be viewed through Apple’s iCloud site and now Apple TV devices.

Some of the new AirPlay features are impressive as well. You now have the ability to send audio from your Apple TV out to devices that support AirPlay, such as compatible speakers, AirPort Express devices, and other Apple TVs. You can now also password-protect AirPlay access with an on-screen code, so that no one else on your WiFi network has access to your content.

Another great feature they’ve added is iTunes account switching, which lets each member in your family have their own music or movies libraries on the Apple TV. The update brings the ability to swap between accounts quickly right on the Apple TV. Of course, you could just have one big library that combines all of your family’s content, but we know how stingy some family members can be.

The iOS 5.1 update also includes subtitle support, movie trailers, more advanced networking options, and general performance improvements and bugfixes. If you don’t yet have the update, you can grab it now by going to Settings > General > Update Software on your Apple TV.

YouTube now offering translated captions for international videos

One of the coolest things about YouTube is how much user content from different cultures you can access. However, much of that content is in over 300 different languages, and most YouTube users only know a few languages. Before, if you wanted captions in your language, you had to hope that the uploader or a good samaritan offered a hardcoded translation. Google and YouTube announced today that they were applying Google’s machine translation software to YouTube captions, which will vastly increase the international appeal of some videos.

According to the YouTube blog post, translated captions require a caption track first, so not all videos will have translated captions. But once a caption track is added, there is now a handy “request translation” button that crowdsources accurate translations. Once the button is pushed, YouTube creates “first draft” caption translation documents based on Google Translator that the uploader can can edit himself or share with other translators. The documents have a nifty interface that embeds the YouTube video next to the translation so the captions have a bit of human input with regards to timing.

So while translated captions won’t be automatically generated, the amount of translated captions available on Youtube will go up significantly. Sure, a video with only a few views probably won’t have translations for less common languages, but a viral smash like Gangnam Style definitely will. As for me, I’ll finally find out what those shrieking Japanese girls in the background of cute cat videos are saying.

Google launches iOS 6 update for Chrome

We already told you that many iOS developers have issued updates for their apps now that the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 are on the scene, and now we can count Google among that group. Despite being given the cold shoulder by Apple in its new Maps app, Google has delivered an update for Chrome on iOS. Most importantly, this update adds increased functionality for those using iOS 6 or an iPhone 5.

So, this latest Chrome update makes it play nice with the iPhone 5′s bigger screen and iOS 6. What else does it do? Not much, apparently, as the only other changelog entry states that Google implemented a number of “stability and security improvements” with this update. What those improvements are exactly is anyone’s guess, because Google doesn’t dive into specifics. Instead, we get a changelog that is a whole two entries and twelve words long.

In other words, if you don’t own an iPhone 5 or haven’t updated to iOS 6 yet, there won’t be much for you in this update. After all, while boosts to stability and security are always needed, they aren’t really anything to get excited about. Still, there are a lot of iOS users out there who prefer to use Chrome over the competition, so we don’t doubt that this update will be appreciated by many.

Google definitely isn’t alone when it comes to updating its apps with new functionality for iOS 6 and the iPhone 5. A bunch of developers managed to push updates for their apps on the iPhone 5′s launch day, while many more were issuing updates throughout the weekend. A ton of developers will be launching updates for their iOS apps in the coming weeks too, so this is only the beginning. You can find the iOS version of Google Chrome by clicking this link, and if you haven’t checked it out yet, be sure to have a look at our review to see what we think of the app.

Sony announces new line of slim external batteries for smartphones and tablets

Sony announces new external batteries for smartphones and tablets

Sony announced on Monday that it will introduce a new line of external batteries for smartphones and tablets. Shipping in capacities of 3,500 to 7,000mAh, these external juice boxes weigh around 198 grams and measure 130.6mm by 12.9mm, making them about the size of a modern smartphone. Charging devices via USB, Sony claims that these portable pick me ups can be recharged up to 500 times and can charge most smartphones in an hour and a half. If toting another smartphone-like device around doesn’t sound ideal to you, Sony will also be releasing smaller “stick-type” (think flash drives) external batteries in assorted colors. Both battery types are set to launch this fall, with prices ranging from 2,300 yen ($30) to 7,000 yen ($90). Wouldn’t it just be easier to sell a marginally thicker phone with world-class battery life? A boy can dream
