National Conference On Citizenship: Civic Health Predicts Resistance To Unemployment

During the day, classrooms at Weller Elementary School in Springfield, Mo., are filled with students, teachers and the usual abundance of youthful energy and enthusiasm. But on Tuesday and Friday nights, a different kind of energy fuels the hopeful ambiance.

On those nights, local pastors, school nurses, small-business owners, PTA volunteers, and retired community members meet to discuss their vision for the Weller neighborhood and solutions to the economic challenges it faces. The group tackles questions like “Why do we have economic challenges in our neighborhood?” and “How do we reduce poverty in order to reach our vision?.”

The answer may be “civic health.”

Can a Flashy New Redesign Make Myspace Cool Again? [Video]

Myspace, that ancient social networking dinosaur, is back with a new coat of paint. And get ready for this: it looks kind of neat. The new format has some pretty clear Pinterest and Tumblr influence, and also looks like it’ll be doubling down on the music aspect of the Myspace world, maybe giving Spotify’s social aspects a little competition. Maybe. More »

Kid Koala bundles working cardboard gramophone with new album, spurs on budding turntablists video

If you’ve been enough of a Kid Koala fan to have heard his original Scratchcratchratchatch mixtape, you’ll remember a sample that mentioned building a “finger-powered record player.” Kid Koala, also known as Eric San, certainly remembers — buy the Limited Edition of his recently launched 12 Bit Blues album and you’ll get your own functional, build-it-yourself cardboard gramophone along with a playable disc. The only further requirements are a sewing pin and some hand power. It’s cheaper than tracking down the real thing, and a nod both to San’s turntablist style as well as the back-to-basics nature of the music. We call it clever and potentially inspiring; just remember that you’ll want some proper equipment before you DJ any house parties.

The new iPhone lightning connector may break third-party adapters

Because of Apple’s well-established ecosystem of speaker docks and other accessories, when the iPhone 5′s new connector adaptor was priced at $30, people were surprised, especially since the new Magsafe adaptor was only $10. Peter from Double Helix Cables has found a reason why: there’s a new chip inside the Lightning connector, which he surmises is an authentication chip. Eric Limer at Gizmodo found a chip as well, but he can’t confirm that it’s an authentication system.

Iran: New Drone Can Cover Much Of Region

TEHRAN, Iran — A senior Iranian commander says the country’s newly-produced missile-carrying drone has a range of 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles), which puts much of the Middle East within operating distance of Iranian territory.

The Monday report by the semiofficial Fars agency quoted Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, who is aerospace chief of the powerful Revolutionary Guards.

Facebook: private messages never appeared on timelines

Facebook is doing what it can to combat a particularly nasty rumor today, telling the BBC that private messages never appeared on public timelines like some users have claimed. Most of these users were from France, and say that private messages sent between 2007 and 2009 started appearing on their timelines. Your Facebook timeline, as you’re hopefully already aware, is open for your friends to see (and everyone else using the service if your privacy settings allow it), so we can see why this would cause some controversy.

After all, having messages that were intended to be private suddenly appear on a very public part of your profile could potentially result in a hairy situation for some users, so it would be cause for concern if stuff like this was actually happening. Facebook says it isn’t though, telling BBC that it is “satisfied that there has been no breach of user privacy.” Engineers working at Facebook claim there is “no way” that private messages could accidentally show up on a user’s timeline, according to a source close to the company.

Facebook users who claim to be affected by this glitch in the system aren’t convinced that everything is all hunky-dory though. The BBC quotes a number of users who are claiming that this is a very real problem, with one of them – What I Wore Today owner Poppy Dinsey – saying that messages spanning the six-year period between 2006 and 2012 have appeared on her wall. That definitely is not a good thing, and if these users are telling the truth, then it will only be the latest in a long line of privacy concerns for Facebook.

Of course, it’s hard to tell which side is telling the truth when both sides are giving very different versions of the story. We’re tempted to believe the users before believing Facebook, merely because the users don’t have to worry about public relations or running damage control, but it is possible that these users are simply mistaken in this case. Has this rumored glitch affected any of you, or are your private messages staying off your timeline?

Apple TV 5.1 Brings Custom Network Configurations, Could Allow For VPN Use

hero_appletv_2ndgen

Apple today released its iOS 5.1 update, which brought a number of new features to the table, including the ability to set up custom network configurations using Apple Configurator, the device management tool Apple offers through the Mac App Store for management of multiple iOS devices across an organization or household.

Apple doesn’t go into detail about what exactly you can do with the new network configuration options, saying simply that it allows users to install configuration profiles “to configure Wi-Fi and Ethernet corporate networks,” but it’s very possible that this could also open the door for users to employ virtual private network settings on an Apple TV, meaning that they could potentially get access to U.S. region-locked streaming services like Hulu Plus beyond American shores.

Of course, that’s bad, don’t do that. But if you were so inclined, you could give it a try and let us know what you think. I’m hearing that getting Configurator to properly prepare Apple TV units for device management isn’t working just yet, but this could be because an update from Apple for that piece of software is still required and will be fixed soon. After all, there is already a brand new Knowledge Base article on Apple’s website about the procedure for updating Apple TV network settings from within Configurator..

If you’re looking for other additions, the Apple TV update boasts quite a few, including support for the new Shared Photo Streams introduced in iOS 6 and AirPlay for audio from Apple TV to other sources, whereas before now it’s always been only the other way around.

Full details about what’s included below, as per Apple’s official update notes:
